Is there anything that can be done about dem bums outside of copa!?

Recommended Posts

Does Comerica also have the people holding up "Repent, the end is near" kind of signs? There are a couple of them that I often see outside of Fenway.

I don't see that where I'm at. But I guess if I had to live in Boston, I'd want the world to end, too.

Sabretooth: this has been a fantastic thread. You make some wonderfully cogent points. I appreciate the time it took for you to engage me on this. While I still believe that the majority of the homeless / panhandling issue points to a larger failing of the system, I see and note the exceptions you've stated here. There are people who are just too anti-authoritarian to work. I propose that the next time I encounter a panhandler I will ask him or her if, given the chance, would they work a normal job for a steady paycheck. If they answer yes, I will give them my spare change. If they answer no, I will consider their business venture as their own choice and in turn choose not to patronize their business. That way I feel like we are both right in a way ;) Thanks for such an engaging discourse on this with me.

Thanks for the compliments and I appreciate your perspective; I always like an interesting debate, and a chance to screw with conventional wisdom a little bit. :bandit:

After graduating college I was part of Americorps for a year. There were a lot of homeless that came into the Legal Services where I worked. I would say that a large part of being homeless is hitting a streak of bad luck. It is not because the homeless are lazy, drunks, etc.

Yeah, but calling them lazy and drunks makes for better rhetoric.

yeah man you gotta think of the children there the ones who need the protecting going on i mean what are they supposed to do look at a bum on the corner at copa and realize that there are people in this world that dont have a house to go to that dont have food to put in there stomachs that have pushed away perhaps through addiction everyone around them so that no one will give them a place to stay that dont have a quarter of the stuff in my sisters toybox to there name that arent acknowledged by the vast majority of the people they say hello to simply because in our consumer culture there is no room for those who dont have money to spend no man thats not family friendly at all

better that they hang out in the suburbs and see no bad things at all well wait embezzlements pretty bad aint it and taxevasion and prescription drug addiction and the endless buying of stuff that no one really needs or even wants but feel compelled to buy to keep up with the neighbors well those are all pretty minor things i mean no one is harmed by taxevasion what we all are because were all supposed to pay a fair share well what do you mean i mean why should they have to pay for the crackhead homeless in front of copa there not crackheads themselves and havent ****ed up there own lives so why pay for the others what do you mean were all in this together and 'ask not for whom the bell tolls it tolls for thee' it doesnt toll for me at all im not a crackhead and its not my problem

yeah man that bighearted illitch what a guy i mean he built out of his own pockets the stadium the tigers play in well i mean he got some taxpayers dollars to do it but what was he supposed to do pay for it all on his own when it benefits the entire community what do you mean it doesnt benefit the entire community of course it does it brings local businesses to the area i mean doesnt federov or some red have a bar right there that makes a bunch of money only because the baseball is next door i mean yeah that only really benefits federov but the stadium being there helps the entire community i mean look at the homeless out front do you think theyd make any money without the baseball really they should be thanking illitch that he dont call the cops on them and get them clubbed what do you mean panhandling aint a crime sure it is its called libel

illitch really saved downtown detroit by convincing the politicians to build him a stadium that he can turn a profit on without having to use much if any of his own money to do it i mean what are we supposed to do bankrupt the guy just because he wants to build a stadium for us what do you mean its not for us its for him and his wallet no its not i mean well yeah you have to pay to get into the place sure but the team costs money you know and yeah the beers are expensive but miller is triple hops brewed thats expensive you know and i dont think hes gouging anyone on anything to turn a profit at the taxpayers expense you need to go to econ class and find out how welfare works because my teacher told me that welfare is important and thats exactly what illitch got

now those dirty panhandlers that scare my sister no they dont deserve **** because there just scum who dont want to work what do you mean not all of them are swindlers and cheats sure they are i mean no one becomes homeless if they try not to they can always look to there parents for money or there friends or there bosses what do you mean some peoples parents have money i live in auburn hills and everyones parents has money and they share it thats what a family is all about what do you mean do i have any idea what kind of credit card debt those *** holes are in from buying the house the car the boat the pool the wife they couldnt afford first of all you dont buy a wife second of all its all paid for already so what if its a credit card aint that the same thing

look i may only be 14 but i know a lot about the world and it starts here if your rich your virtuous and if your poor your a piece of **** because poor people in detroit ask me and my sisters for money and my dad a small business owner in the suburbs only asks the government for money and what the heck they can just print more you know and yeah id rather sweep those ugly parts of the world away and not think of them i mean i know people in africa are starving and people in india are starving and miners in south america are trapped and african kids are born with hiv through no fault of there own because there parents are idiots and i know that the church protects pedophiles and there are children forced into prostitution for sex tourism and that there are all kinds of places where there just isnt enough water and i know that all these bad things happen but theyve got nothing to do with me i live in auburn hills a great place with no crime at all at least none that hurts anyone and i dont want to be reminded of all those bad things i just want to see the tigers game and anyway how are they all related to me like i said i just live out here in the suburbs and all those problems are elsewhere

{snip}

I'll say this for you -- you sure know how to commit to a joke.

All I can say is, give me a homeless guy asking for money outside the stadium any day over some drunken frat boy douchebag inside the park trying to impress everyone with how cute and clever he is.

I can just say "No thank you" to the homeless guy and be on my way. With the frat boy douchebag, I've got to put up with him for 9 innings.

And homeless panhandlers don't appear on my TV screen during a game to interfere with my view of the action. Unlike drunken frat boys at The Joe with seats against the glass who insist on turning their backs to the play and waving goofily at the camera while talking on their cell phone whenever the puck goes into the corner nearest to them.

In no way am I siding with blueadams on this (see my earlier posts) but I disagree with some of what you're saying. A lot of people panhandle because they're "running a game," as they say on the street.

For instance, a woman came up to me one time and said, "I'm in an emergency. I need $20 to buy my baby some medicine." There's no way I could turn down someone with that kind of situation, so I offered to give her a ride to the local drug store and buy the medicine for her. She walked away.

Another time, a man came up to me in the gas station and asked for a few bucks because his car broke down. I told him I wouldn't give him any money, but that I was a good mechanic and would be happy to try to get his car started. He just smiled at me and then admitted he needed money for drugs.

As I said earlier, I don't give money. If someone needs clothes or food, there are several places (soup kitchens, COTS) where they can get the necessities of life.

I will, however, offer to help someone in need by offering services. I've had too many good people help me when my car needed a jump to refuse aid to someone who truly needs it.

But I simply ain't giving up any cash. If someone told me they were starving, I'd take them to the restaurant and buy them dinner, but no dough.

I am reminded of this time that I had left Lafayette Coney Island late one night. I had a coney to go in a paper bag. I was approached by a panhandler who wanted a dollar to buy something to eat. I pulled out a dollar, but then decided I didn't need the coney to go. So with a dollar in one hand and food in the other, I told him to take his pick.

Well, he looked at the food and then at the dollar, and then at the food again. His head turned back and forth as he considered his options. He then threw up his hands and ran off screaming.

Because everyone knows .... beggars can't be choosers.

Number one, Detroit is not the murder capital of the country.

Number two, besides asking for change, what else do the bums do? I've never been threatened by a bum once in my entire life.

Number three, where do you park for $20 dollars that is totally dark & doesn't have anyone around you. The streets are flooded with people after a Tigers game, and if you're paying that much for parking, you can't be walking that far.

That's exactly what I was gonna say!. Never been bothered, just ticket talk. Sure, there's lots of folks hanging around, but no one has asked me for money. Yes, it's a tough town. Most big cities are nowadays.

a lot of you people need to WAKE THE **** UP!!!

#1) Pan-handling should be ILLEGAL. Begging for money should be ILLEGAL. If you are truly in need of food, clothing, shelter, etc...there are more than enough government facilities around that will provide you with all the basic necessities. It's pretty clear to me that MOST of you talking crap to me about not being more understanding of the homeless haven't spent much time around them, if any. Like the poster who worked with the homeless in Kalamazoo, I too have spent a lot of time in that city.

Here is how the typical day of a homeless person in Kalamazoo goes:

about 1 or 2 pm, wake up at one of the downtown homeless shelters, the most popular is actually a pretty nice converted old hotel. eat first meal of the day there. head over to the really, really nice public library. goof around on the internet, read magazines or whatever for 6 or so hours. then its off to wherever their 'spot' is, usually outside of a liquor store, gas station, mcdonalds, whatever. for the next few hours they try and trick rich college kids into giving them money until the spot closes, or they get enough change to buy a pint, a rock, cigarettes, whatever the shelters won't give them. then, if lucky, they go get ****ed up and hangout at the downtown mcdonalds, which seems to be the most popular homeless hangout, right across the street from the shelter.

#2) Look, a lot homeless guys are mentally ill. That's sad. But me, or you, giving them money for cigarettes, drugs, alcohol isn't going to help them get back on their feet. It's only going to bury them down further. The shelters give them everything they really NEED. If you really care about the homeless, STOP giving them change. You're nothing but an enabler, all you're really doing is making their lives worse...but...at least you get to feel charitable, right?

#3) Transitional homeless guys, down on their luck for whatever reason, don't usually beg. They live at the shelters. Use the job service programs. Use the public libraries. Look for work there. Eat the free meals. Use the showers. Sleep in the free beds. And then they get back out there with the rest of us. These guys are on and off the streets. The services are there for people who really want to not be homeless.

#4) The rest of the guys are absolute SCUM BAGS. And it's everyone you run into at CoPa (with the exceptions of the mentally ill guys). They have everything they need at the shelters. They could turn their lives around if they wanted to. BUT THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO WORK 40 HRS A WEEK FOR MINUMUM WAGE. They'd rather be homeless. Make about the same on assistance and not work at all. Trick you into forking over your hard earned money. And spend it getting ****ed up. It should be illegal for these guys to stand around public places and harrass tourists. It makes the city look like ****. I don't care if it's the same in every city. It shouldn't be. It should be illegal.

p.s. - i got banned for calling detroit what i did, and what i still think it is.

That's not true. You were asked by the site administrator via a private message to not post inappropriate language and 30 minutes later you did it again anyway.
