Is there anything that can be done about dem bums outside of copa!?

Recommended Posts

I mean, I hate being this guy, but wtf. i pay 20 bucks for parking to lessen the chances i'll get mugged on the way to the park. and still, i have to deal with 7 or 8 different bums getting in my face about change...and then again on my way back.

say what you will about my morals or whatever, but ****. my little sisters dont wanna go to the ball park anymore, it scares them, especially walking back to the car after a night game. and its depressing. theres nothing worse than being all jacked up about a tigers win...and then...after that long little walk through hell back to the car...feeling all down and bitter about the city.

i mean, is there anything that can be done to get these guys away from the park? it seems like the tigers have almost embraced them with the 'eat em up tigers' guy being on fsn the other yr. its not like theres a shortage of homeless facilities in detroit and these guys are starving. its not africa. theyre just looking for booze/drug/lotto money. nothing else. end of story.

furthermore, this is what sportswriters experience when they come to detroit. it contributes to how bad our nat'l reputation is.

even i think that those replies are hilarious, but i think this is a pretty serious issue, and i'd like to at least hear what other fans really think about it

Perhaps we should change reality and provide hope and opportunity for the homeless rather than hide them like some unwanted bastard child.

Stop and ask Brandon and Gerald for their autographs.

I see Panas already beat me there with this beaut.

8 bums? One more and we can make a line-up.

if you offered all the homeless people in detroit a full time job at an average salary, what percentage do you think would accept?

and what percentage do you think would still prefer the slightly lower salary (and 40 hrs less of work a week) that they get on assistance?

pretend like they're not there? Seems easy to me. Just keep walking.

tell that to scared little 8 and 10 yr old girls that would rather just stay at home than go to a game and be hassled by these creeps in total darkness in the murder capital of the country.

Number one, Detroit is not the murder capital of the country.

Number two, besides asking for change, what else do the bums do? I've never been threatened by a bum once in my entire life.

Number three, where do you park for $20 dollars that is totally dark & doesn't have anyone around you. The streets are flooded with people after a Tigers game, and if you're paying that much for parking, you can't be walking that far.

When a homeless person/bum asks for money, I treat them the same as I would a salesman in a suit and tie trying to sell me something I don't want: I politely tell them "no" and move on.

Having to deal with either the bum or salesman would get annoying after awhile. But it's a small price to pay to watch a ballgame. If you politely tell a homeless person no, 99 percent of the time they won't bother you again.

I'd guess the chances of being pestered by a persistent bum before or after a ballgame are roughly the same as a drunken frat boy doing something stupid that infringes on your enjoyment during the game.

In both cases, it's best to just try to ignore them, unless they totally cross the line to the point where it's necessary to say something.

If a bum gets in your face, tell him to get the **** out of your face. That's what I'd do if anyone got in my grill, bum or frat boy.

I've never had a bum chase after me or threaten me when I told them I didn't have money. What kind of bums are you running into, blue?

Hold their hand and just keep walking. Tell them before hand if someone talks to you, dont look, dont answer. Just keep moving.

Blueadams, we have tons of bums in Vancouver. Tourists even from DC and NYC say they encounter many more here than back home. And ours tend to be younger and agile since Vancouver is a port city so you'll find lots of backpackers or migrants or drifters who end up here and figure that it's easier to be a bum where winter temps are 50 degree F and you have a view of the mountains than it is in Calgary or Toronto. Now and then they can get persistent and in-your-face, but then again many are stoned on BC Bud so are usually pretty laid back. Point being, bums are part of big cities and they won't faze the national media at all.

As to your sisters or girlfriend, yeah, I can see it might be a bummer for them. I tend to be more annoyed for some reason when a bum approaches me when I'm with my 4-year old daughter than when I'm out alone. But again, it's a fact of big city life. It's like your companion being annoyed at a rock concert because they have to put up with the smell of marijuana and might hear swearing or see someone flash their boobs. And I still don't think the vibe outside of Comerica is anywhere near as edgy as it was a few blocks from Tiger Stadium. If you say no to a bum, they can move on to any of the other 29,999 fans or so in attendance that night. If it bothers you, try a matinee game instead when you want your sisters to accompany you, atmosphere then tends to be less intimidating.

Well, then I guess those poor, scared little girls will just have to stay home, won't they?

I've been to dozens upon dozens of games through the years, and very few of these "creeps" are over the top when asking for handouts. Most of them just stand there holding a cup. A few are more aggressive, and will ask "help out the homeless?" or something like that. Some try to pass out little flags; others attempt to make jokes, as in the "Eat 'em up Tigers" guy.

But in my experience, it's rare for a homeless person to really be annoying. Mostly, the more aggressive guys will simply ask for a donation. If you politely tell them no and keep walking, they usually won't bother you any more.

As far as the "murder capital of the country" part goes, you're right. Detroit does hav a high murder rate, although 99 percent of the homicides take place in the neighborhoods, with people who know each other, mostly dope-related. As it pertains to this discussion, the more operative thing to ask is, what's the murder rate in downtown Detroit during sporting events? There are literally cops on every corner, and people everywhere.

It sounds to me like you don't want your young relatives to be exposed to those unsightly "creeps." It's also clear you hold Detroit in disdain, choosing to ignore reality (cops everywhere downtown before and after games) and focus on the negative.

So as a person who lives in Detroit, let me be the first to tell you: If you don't like it here, don't come. If walking the streets of the murder capital of the nation is going to get the bottoms of your shoes dirty, or defile your innocent young relatives' delicate female eyes, then go to Metro Beach and do the breast stroke in a swamp of e-coli.

Make no mistake: I'm no Detroit booster. The city's elected officials are a complete joke. Most neighborhoods are shitholes. But when it comes to downtown during events which draw suburbanites, every effort is made to ensure visitors have a safe experience. And for the vast majority, that's exactly what happens. This heightened security downtown is maintained at the expense of the neighborhoods. A cop outside Comerica making sure your *** is able to cross the street without getting mugged is a cop who isn't patrolling my block. That's my tax dollars going to protect the likes of you.

But that's ok. I fully understand the need to try to draw visitors to our city, and, as I said, every effort has been made to do so. I fully welcome those who want to be here, thank them for their patronage, and hope they enjoy themselves.

But if you feel like you're above coming to Detroit, then stay the **** out, whydontcha? We don't want you here.

Umm...its a called a city. Go to any other one and you'll find the same, if not worse.
