Arsenal is tied in the second half, so is Braga. If Braga can win or Arsenal loses and Braga stays tied, then Braga advances and Arsenal is sent home. Could be an interesting finish

Arsenal score 2 goals pretty quickly, looks like they will at least finish 2nd now....now they would win the group if Braga won.

Just been watching some of QPR vs Watford which is on the tele this evening - good game if you get a chance to see it.

If you get the BBC half time feed there's a feature on Watford's rise in the 80s. Just reminded me what a hell of a player John Barnes was, with Blisset clearly the other stand out player from that period. But Barnes, at times, just unplayable.

Ah, nostalgia - there was even a pitch invasion...

About as good of a draw as you could hope for from Chelsea. Arsenal got unlucky getting Barcelona. AC Milan v. Spurs should be a real interesting matchup as well

Arsenal blew it by finishing 2nd in the group to Shakhtar, who they beat 5-1 at the Emirates. Shakhtar gets to play Roma; it should have been Arsenal facing off against Roma and Shakhtar against Barca.

AFP: Cruyff slams Barca sell-out

MADRID — Former Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff on Wednesday slammed the Catalan giants for agreeing a record shirt sponsorship deal worth 30 million euros per season with the Qatar Foundation.

The deal is the biggest ever in the history of strip sponsorship in football worth 165 million euros until 2016 but the former Dutch superstar believes that it goes against the history of the club?s fabled strip.

Cruyff said that by signing the deal, Barcelona whose slogan is "mes que un club" (more than a club) had become "just another club."

"Socially we've made a bad deal," said Cruyff, who is currently coach of the Catalan national team. "There are other solutions rather than sullying the jersey."

Barca will place the Qatar Foundation on their shirts alongside the existing logo for UN children's agency UNICEF, which they have sported for the five years while forgoing the riches of commercial sponsors.

I found this write-up and the subsequent comments to be very interesting. Talked to a few people I consider to be knowledgeable and they said Vickery is the guy to read for English accounts of South American football

BBC - Tim Vickery: Can Ganso make his mark?

He's been doing it for 20 years. You can hear him every Saturday night on the world football phone in. I usually get it in podcast form on Monday.

Kaka scores his first of the season and Ronaldo scores 3 as real beat Villarreal 4-2. A healthy kaka could help Madrid tremendously

Someone in last season's thread thought the Inter kit was too cluttered. How about this new version? More patches than a Cub Scout uniform. And dragons.

They look like they are in elementary school and get a sticker for every station they successfully accomplish during some sort of project.

I'm reading "Soccer in a Football World" by Dave Wangerin, a pretty fascinating read about the history of the the game in the United States.

Just reading about some of the fledgling attempts to "go pro" back in the 1960s, and it seems Detroit had a team -- the Cougars -- that consisted of the entire Glentoran (Northern Ireland) squad on their summer offseason. Home games were played at Tiger Stadium and controversy seemed to follow them everywhere: pitch invasions, referee attacks, botched pre-games in which they were mistakenly led out behind a flag-bearer carrying a ROI tri-color, etc.

The team folded after two seasons but it seems they are still remembered in Belfast.

Guess I have a club to support in the Irish League now.

Oh my goodness, the guys on FSC are so annoying today. They really hate Chelsea or something. Chelsea came in WINNING 2-0 and are playing at home. Yet the announcer every minute says something like "This is not the start we expected from Chelsea" or "Chelsea has to be nervous they arent scoring with these chances" or "Copenhagen has to love the way this game is going" or "Chelsea had to expect better in that first half". Excuse me, Chelsea is sitting on a 2-0 lead and playing at home and still has had more chances than Copenhagen and the game is 0-0 at half. Im sure Chelsea is perfectly happy right now, up 2-0 at home going into the 2nd half. Then they cut to the halftime show and the one guy is saying "Why havent Chelsea scored yet? What are they doing wrong? I am starting to think Copnhagen has a chance" or "Chelsea should be attacking more, advance more players" and "Do you think Carlo is getting into his guys at the half". Come on, really? Finally one of the halftime guys says "Come on, Chelsea is still cruising"...thank goodness one of them knows what is going on

First of all, everyone hates Chelsea. They were Man City before Man City.

Secondly, they have $300 million worth of players and they still play dour, boring football. Nothing to like about that.

Thirdly, the announcers are trying to instill an ounce of drama into a game that has none. Copenhagen are the worst team left in the tournament and have no shot at Chelsea, even a Chelsea that has been very poor this season.

Blame FSC for even showing that game in the first place when Real and Lyon was going on at the same time. FSC would show and English team playing a pile of **** over a better game between two teams that dare to speak a language we Americans don't understand. Pathetic.

Trust me, I was mad, I wanted to watch the Real match. It was the only one of the 4 this week not on tv

Chelsea get United, Spurs get Madrid, Inter get the Germans and Barca gets a bye.

Rio might be out for the season. More worries for United.

Pretty fair for Barca, since they had to deal with Arsenal last round
