NFL Network no longer on WOW!

Recommended Posts

Got this email today that the NFL Network is no longer going to be carried on WOW! cable.

The NFL Network will no longer be carried on WOW! Digital Basic Cable effective August 1, 2010. Games for your local NFL teams will continue to be aired on local broadcast stations and are not affected. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and would like to explain our decision.

WOW! has been a partner of the NFL Network since we launched it in 2005 and our contract with the channel expires on July 31, 2010. We worked hard to preserve carriage of the network under fair and reasonable terms that would be in the best interest of all our customers. Unfortunately, we were unable to reach such agreement with the NFL Network.

The bottom line is this: We accept that programming expenses increase each year. We don’t like it, but we get that everyone has a business to run – as do we. Unfortunately, in today’s environment, the increases demanded by many programming networks are excessive. So while we believe the NFL Network to be a worthy channel, it’s not worth carrying at any price.

We know decisions like this are not always popular. But we hope you understand that we do strive to make decisions that we truly believe are responsive to the programming and pricing needs of all our customers. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Colleen Abdoulah

Chief Executive Officer

I never really warmed to the NFL Network so I don't think this will affect me much. I found the hosts to be rather dull and watched mostly ESPN during the season. Say what you will about their NY/Boston baseball love, but they're hard to top with their NFL coverage.

I didn't eve know I had it! Shows you how much I like the NFL. But I just got the email so I figured I'd share it with others.

Very torn, I'm moving to the area and am not sure who to go with. I was originally going to go with direct TV but the internet would not be included, which is a nice perk of Comcast. Any suggestions?

The NFL is so well-covered elsewhere that I've always found their network kind of superfluous. The exclusive Thursday-night games are rarely "must see" material, and IMO they've never shown near enough in the way of classic games or films.

On the other hand, they are carrying CFL games now. So there's that.

This sucks. I'm going to have to go over my options, and let Wow know what I feel about this. I pay top dollar for good stuff, and they don't even have the MLB Network. This is worth leaving them for. What do I want to watch, the Olympics? Soccer? Heck no. Wow has made terrible decisions lately, getting rid of HDNet and HDNet Movies, replacing HDNet Movies with MGM, which is the worst group of films/garbage ever put on a channel. I'm not happy about this.

I sent them a message. I won't make any new friends with that message. At least I have options right now.

Sending WOW! messages is useless. There is a reason why they're cheaper than the others. Stuff like this. You leaving is still better for their business model than giving in to the high cost of carrying those channels. I don't like it either and would like to switch but I can't justify the cost yet. Plus I've got about 45 hours on my DVR of unwatched material!

Also, someone has since taken my "oblong" email address from comcast. A friend of mine told me about it. Which is a bit scary

The only reason I was hanging on to them was because they had NFL Network.

I've got Comcast coming out next week. I'll have NFL Red Zone, so I'm stoked.

By the way, thank you very much Oblong for this thread and the heads up. I don't know if I would have found out otherwise, until too late. I'll also save thirty bucks a month for a full year, with HBO added on to boot.

no problem. You'll also get MLB Network, right?

That's why I want to switch over.

I think so, that would be a bonus. I think it also has the NHL Network.

WOW is now going to charge you $40 for a service call if the problem is with you. Of course, you can get around that by signing up for their "plan" for $2.99 a month.

WOW nickle and dimes you. Their On Demand library isn't as good as Comcast either. You get what you pay for. One of their guys came to my door and "hooked me up" with their internet phone. I had Vonage at the time. He said he'd save me $5-$7 a month if I got their phone service so I switched. I got my bill.... there were now more gov't fees so I ended up only saving like $2. The rationale being that a cable company is a telecommunications company and subject to more taxes where a company like Vonage isn't. It's always in the back of my mind to switch back to Vonage because I Like their call forward feature, where if the internet is down it will forward to another #. You can also use their web interface to see a log of all incoming/outgoing calls.

well, I think that makes sense. I think every company in the world would charge you if the fault is with you.

With no MLB or NFL networks, WOW isn't even on my radar. Been with DirecTV, and would consider dumping them, but no other system has MLB Network, MLB Extra Innings, NFL Network and NFL Sunday Ticket. So since those are must viewing for me, I'm stuck with DirecTV for the near future.

NFL Network comes across like the public access channel only for the NFL. Bad product and cheap production all around.

I think it's fantastic.

Any channel that shows as much NFL Films material as NFL Network shows, is A-OK in my book.

The channel is much better during the season though.

What I like about the NFL Network is the same thing I like about MLB Network, NHL Network, The Big 10 Network..........which is the singularity of it's coverage. I don't think I've watched an entire "ESPN Sportscenter" in years. And haven't really tuned in more than a few minutes for the most part either. And I don't miss it at all. Primarily because I now don't have to sit and wait through stuff I couldn't give a crap about, like PGA, Nascar, WNBA, World Cup Soccer, WPGA, tennis, and all the other junk they report on. And they always manage to start off with a main in-season sport like baseball or football, and beak up their coverage by sprinkling in all the lesser sports.

NO MORE I SAY!

Now, if I want NFL - just watch NFL Access. Or QUICK PITCH on MLB. NHL Network if I want hockey highlights.

Man - you gotta love progress!
