Dirks, Simons, Brown to represent SeaWolves in all-star game

From staff reports

Despite an up and mostly down first half of the season, the Erie SeaWolves will have three representatives in the Eastern League All-Star Game.

Outfielder Andy Dirks, relief pitcher Zach Simons and pitcher Brooks Brown had earned spots on the Western Division team when the rosters were announced Tuesday. Dirks and Brown made the team as fan selections, and Simons was picked by EL managers and media.

Dirks, in his second year with the SeaWolves, was selected to his first pro all-star game. Going into Tuesday's game in Bowie, he was hitting .279 with 10 homers and 38 RBIs and had a team-leading 15 stolen bases. He also led the team with 84 hits and ranked third in the EL. His 14 outfield assists, meanwhile, topped the league.

Simons, a right-hander, will appear in the EL All-Star Game for the second straight year. In 23 relief appearances before Tuesday, he had a 1-1 record with three saves and a 2.52 earned-run average. In 352/3 innings, he had allowed 24 hits and 11 walks while striking out 37.

Brown, also a right-hander, made his first all-star team with the Tigers organization and his third overall. He is 5-5 with two saves and a 4.70 ERA and has a league-leading two complete games among his seven starts. He made all-star teams in the California League in 2007 and Texas League in 2008 while he was with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.

The EL All-Star Game will be played July 14 at Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg.
