It looks like the bat is bending around the ball -- I've never seen that before, I wonder if it's an optical illusion.

Thanks all for the comments....It's a lot of fun for me to take these......I wish the Tigers visited Atlanta more often, but then again, I couldn't afford to go to many more games:disappnt:

motion blur

Simple blur wouldn't bend the bat. Shutter traversal could, depending on what kind of camera it was. On the other hand, bats DO flex, if they didn't they would never break, as wood is not brittle enough to break without bending first, though maybe not as much as this pic appears to show.

I think there are 2 things at play here.

1. motion blur....the end of the bat is traveling faster than the handle

2. depth of field....the end of the bat is out of the plain of focus a small amount

If you take a straight edge along the bat, you will see that it is straight.

No, the bat flexes. You see it all the time with high-speed cameras.
