When is Boesch not a fluke?

Recommended Posts

He seems to either be grounding out, popping up, or walking (yes, I know that it's not all he does). Pitchers aren't giving him much to hit and he'll either swing and get out or he'll take the pitches and walk, he needs to make them pitch to him, maybe put him in front of Cabrera even?

To my observation, Cabrera is still pretty reluctant to be pitched around. Using him to protect Boesch might hurt his production more than it helps Boesch's.

Wait - we still believe in lineup protection?

In Cabby's case I do. It might not even be so much how he is pitched as how much confidence he has in the guy behind him. Could be my imagination, but to me, last year his impatience at the plate seemed pretty much proportional to how bad the guy in the 5 spot was. Whereas up to recently this year with Boesch the 5 hole has been a lot more consistent, both personal and production wise - and everyone is talking Cabrera triple crown.

What if you shoved Damon behind Cabrera. Something like this....

Jackson

Santiago

Boesch

Cabrera

Damon

Just until Guillen returns?

It would be nice to see JL try something, just to shake the tree a little. I was looking at some '68 box scores and Mayo Smith was moving his 2-6 around all the time. Didn't seem to hurt them too much. Ditto for Scotty Bowman though in a different context.

If it were me, I think most of the time I'd go Austin, Damon, Cabrera, Boesch,,,,. I'd like to think Boesch is a smart kid and can accept taking the walks he'll continue to have to take.
