When is Boesch not a fluke?

Recommended Posts

I think there's only one person who saw it coming: Brennan Boesch. I don't even think his dad believes it.

I wonder what Casper's dad thinks about it?:cheeky:

Ive heard the Chris Shelton comparison so much on the radio and from fans, lets go back and look at Sheltons stats again month by month

April - 92 AB .326/.404/.783 10 HR 20 RBI

May - 91 AB .286/.340/.363 1 HR 8 RBI

June - 88 AB .205/.278/.364 4 HR 8 RBI

Brennan Boesch

April - 23 AB .261/.292/.522 1 HR 7 RBI

May - 84 AB .345/.378/.595 3 HR 15 RBI

June - 71 AB .353/.421/.676(the avg/obp/ops updated before tonights game) 7 HR 17 RBI

Boesch is getting better, while Shelton had already fallen off at this point in the season. On June 23rd 2006 Chris Shelton was hitting .272/.339/.512 14 HR 34 RBI in 251 AB. Brennan Boesch is at .343/.392/.635 11 HR 39 RBI in 178 AB, not to mention he also had 3 HR and 17 RBI in AAA while hitting .379/.455/.621 there in 58 AB before getting called up.

For a slightly more accurate comparison, through 194 PA(what Boesch is at now):

Shelton(06 season, 05 not included): .322/.387/.603 11 HR 28 RBI 47Ks 16BB

Boesch: .343/.392/.635 11 HR 39 RBI 37Ks 14BB

Very comparable numbers. Shelton was still hitting at this point, hitting .424 over his last 10 games up to then. However, it was right at this point that he started to struggle, going 0 for his next 17 and hitting .158 over his next 21 games.

Shelton had some fundamental problems with pulling the ball. He had an inside-out swing, and he couldn't adjust. He was less athletic overall, and he didn't have the bat speed and reach that Boesch has at the plate. Boesch has so much raw power and long arms that he can put a good swing on pitches all over the strike zone. You basically can't get this guy out with strikes. You're going to have to throw him balls and hope he swings at them -- which is something that Boesch makes easy sometimes. That's really his only weakness so far. Other than that, he's a good, fundamental hitter.

There's a lot to like about this board...the one thing that irritates me is the number of "process" discussions that crop up.
Just don't get too obsessed with that, or somebody might accuse you of being weird ...

Is it possible Boesch will be in the mix for that that extra All Star Voting that takes place after the All Star rosters have been set?

I wonder how many posts are in this thread telling people what to talk about.

Not telling, but a friendly reminder .. is that okay?

I am sure he was a 3rd pick for some reason... I am sure this is what we were hoping for, right?

I have to fantasy leagues, one for big money, one for small money .. so I picked him up in the small money league, almost as a joke .. had a bench spot open, so I did it and actually renamed my team the Boesch Bombers (yes blu, spelt correctly), but have later put him into an OF spot, and have now picked him up in my other league, and again, changed the name of my team... This kid is good. It's crazy, that with 60+ less ABs, he has the exact numbers as Jason Heyward!

I have him in two leagues. In one league, I picked him up after his first week just to ride his hot streak for a few games. Another league has 20 teams with over 40 players on each team, so there wasn't anybody left.

Is it OK for me to tell you not to tell me what to talk about? :classic:

What part of "friendly reminder" are you having trouble with?

I sure hope so.

I could get on board with Rod's suggestion of inviting him to participate in the Home Run Derby, too.

Dude, people should read that thread .. it's a good read, with some really good players being drafted not too long ago.

EDIT: it's also nice to read some of Brian's old posts.

If he keeps up this pace he has a very good chance of being named a reserve on the team outright. No other AL outfielder other than Hamilton is really even close to him right now.

...case anyone wants to read what the talk was the day he was picked (3rd round).

SI's Top 20 prospects before college season

19. Brennan Boesch -- OF -- California(2005 stats: .355, 7 HR, 33 RBI)

No hitter on this list had a sophomore season like Boesch's. He was on the watch list for the Golden Spikes Award with an OPS over 1.000. He combines good power with fantastic contact. In fact, Boesch struck out just 27 times in 217 at-bats last year. He is a very good fielder in left, with a great arm and a 6-5 frame. If his power continues to develop, and he adds a few more walks, he has the potential to be one of the gems of the draft.

You can find an article pumping up pretty much every prospect in the first few rounds of every draft. The fact of the matter is Boesch is performing above what every reasonable person expected at the beginning of the year. He's been a very pleasant surprise and I don't know why anyone would even dispute that.

I was reading the game thread last night and there was a snarky post about Austin Jackson and how he hasn't been hitting lately (not sure if there was a mention about maybe his hitting was hampered by back spasms... but babibbrohahaha was)

So as soon as Sir Fluke goes 4/32...

a) how soon will someone post, I told you so

b) and will it be it's on thread or will it be inside another thread?

just asking

Boesch doesn't have a ridiculously high BABIP the way Jackson did. It was virtually impossible for Jackson to maintain the .500 BABIP he had earlier in the season. There is nothing impossible about what Boesch is doing. It's just surprising.
