2011 NFL Draft

Recommended Posts

Nope. From what I understand, it's based on SOS and the Lions played a tougher schedule than the other 6-10 teams. Someone with more knowledge than me will have to fill you in on the specifics, but I do know that they're picking 13th.

Right, it's no consolation, but the teams with the same record change picks in alternate rounds. San Francisco, at 1.7, will pick 2.13, and every other 6-10 team moves up a spot.

The only players that should be excluded from the Lions picks are QB and TE's. Julio Jones and Mark Ingram are high on my list. I wouldn't mind taking a tackle, there is quite a bit of value at that spot, if the Lions can get the pick of the lot. Backus does have one year left on his contract, which doesn't mean they can't extend it a bit. They have some insurance there with Hilliard and Fox, but you can always use tackles.

Next year will probably be the first year of a new collective bargaining agreement where the high draft choices arent making the money they were in the past. If this happens I think the cost to trade up in the draft will be significantly higher.

With the #13th pick the Lions will land a starter (as long as they dont blow the pick). They are still at a point where they have so many needs that any upgrade is a positive so while a CB would be great, so would a LB, DE, T, C, RB

Even if you feel Backus and Riola played well this season they are both getting older and are due for injuries. I didnt watch enough of the o-line to know if Hilliard or Cherilus is a long term answer but neither are a future LT anyways.

All things equal a shutdown corner would be ideal but my second choice would be another pass rushing threat

With Aaron Williams coming out their should be 4 cbs available in the first round. Picking at 13 we should get one of them.

Jimmie Johnson was praising Shaun Hill as a qb that would be a good pickup for any team looking for one (Arizona?). He should be worth more than Charlie Whitehurst was worth last year, if the Lions want to move him and keep Stanton.

It would be a mistake to not keep Hill...he needs to be on the roster in case Stafford flops or is injured again. We could potentially still have a playoff-capable team with Hill as the starter next season...with Stanton we'd be looking at another 6-10 season.

We need a corner. I see champ bailey is a free agent, any chance we can lure him to Detroit? Probably has another two years of good football left in him.

Given that we've signed Scheffler and passed on Michael Oher for a Tight End, I'm a little nervous that some in this organization is Tight End happy.

Why are you so obsessed with Oher? So because the Lions drafted a player at a position where they had a greater need than the position Oher plays makes them TE happy?

Even though Stanton was 2-1 as a starter vs. Hill who was 3-7?

Interesting tidbit on Levy. Perhaps the Lions are looking at a MLB and moving Levy to the outside

• Levy, who finished his first full season at middle linebacker, said no one has said anything to him about moving back to outside linebacker, though he has tried to learn both outside positions. The Lions might be in the market for two linebackers this off-season. Julian Peterson has played his last game as a Lion. He's due $8 million and likely will be released in the first wave of roster cuts next month. Peterson did not speak with reporters today. Zack Follett, who finished the season on injured reserve with neck problems, said he believes he'll be able to come back next year, but the Lions might still want an upgrade at the other outside linebacker position.

The Lions were not the only team that passed on Oher. Pettigrew is a better player right now.

I'd much prefer Levy on the outside. He is a better player in space anyways.

I like Jones and Ingram a lot as well but I probably would not take them unless there were clearly no good options for the offensive line, secondary, or linebacker.

Levy was not that good last year. Injuries probably played a big part in that, but he could easily be upgraded.

Mayhew has shown a tendency to draft BPA. Pettigrew was the #1 TE on the board. The Lions got the #1 QB, #1TE and #1 Safety in that draft. That's a pretty good haul.

Oher's not perfect either, he's been up and down (so has stone hands Pettigrew too). It's not like they passed on Anthony Munoz to take Rob Rubick.

Great assessment here and on Levy. I found it odd that Levy seemingly got good praise this year, he was OK, but he wasnt an above avergae MLB. Perhaps thats due to the injuries, but really Delmas made a lot of tackles 2-3 yards behind where Levy should have made the tackle.

I think Levy is out of place. I think he would do better as a weakside.

Out of place? Did you actually watch the Lions play when he was in there?

Yup. He was better dropping back in pass coverage than defending the run. He's not the biggest LB and reminds me of Larry Foote.

If we upgraded Levy, we would probably need three new linebackers. Given that Levy is still young, has upside, and injuries played a part in his production this year, I think you can forget about upgrading Levy. He is the one linebacker guaranteed of a spot next year.

I think Ashlee Palmer has a spot, too.

I wouldn't mind moving him to the outside, getting a middle LB, and maybe drafting another outside LB. I like Palmer but I think he is more of a 2nd string LB and special teamer.

Yeah, did you?

Levy wasn't that great. It's not a crime to say that, it's an observation. He played outside in college and might do well with a switch to the outside again.

During his last season, where he played well, he was very up and down. Great plays followed by bad misses. Part of that could be chalked up to inexperience.

This season he looked slower and less fluid. I think the injury was really bothering him and I hope he bounces back next year to the speed guy who could go sideline to sideline. Pair him with another big speedy linebacker and the Lions could have something...

IMO, if you DON'T think Levy fell off from last year, you are fooling yourself.

He did have two game winning interceptions. I just read he's getting surgery on his groin so I'm sure that slowed him down. I think he would make a fine starting OLB. I think he's playing MLB for lack of a better option.
