Hens' rally falls short in loss at Columbus

COLUMBUS - The Toledo Mud Hens rallied from a two-run deficit, but the Columbus Clippers tackled on a run in the eighth inning to prevail 3-2 last night.

In the eighth, Columbus loaded the bases with no outs against Mud Hens reliever Daniel Schlereth.

The Hens temporarily avoided damage after Will Rhymes fielded a Wes Hodges grounder at second and got Russell Branyan out at home. But the very next batter, Brian Bixler, singled a line drive to left field, scoring pinch runner Jose Constanza.

Josh Rainwater came on in relief of Schlereth and got Brian Horwitz to ground into a double play, but Columbus had already taken the lead.

Down 2-0 earlier in the game, the Mud Hens cut the lead to one on Jeff Frazier's solo home run over the left field wall off Clippers starting pitcher Hector Rondon.

In the sixth, Toledo tied the game after Brent Dlugach reached on an error and later scored on Ryan Strieby's single to center field.

Mike Gosling earned the win for the Clippers after throwing 11/3 scoreless innings while Schlereth took the loss..
