Why is Granderson batting 7th?????

Recommended Posts

I love Grandy as much as anyone, but I'm simply done with him playing against lefties. He is strictly a platoon player at this point, and should never be allowed to hit against a lefty in an important stage of the game.

As much as I have resisted, I've come to the same conclusion. I don't know what accounts for his nose dive this season but I liked him better when he seemed to be all about and only about being the best player he could be.

O.K......we ALL LOVE Grandy, NO QUESTION about that ---

-- however, he is NOT producing vs. LHP and should not be playing --

further, he has NOT had a clutch hit that I can remember -- he shouldn't be exempt nor untouchable from replacement. Clearly, Wilkin should have played in his batting order slot (or above) tonight!

Granderson got some boos tonight.

But he did have at last ONE clutch hit this year. He knocked in the tying run in that Saturday Chicago game in July off of Bobby Jenks. The ball just got passed Konerko. That's about it that I can remember.

Breaks my heart because I thought he was a Tiger lifer but he's got to step it up. He's having a down year, 26HR aside. When he comes up I have zero confidence now. At tonight's game we actually made the comment "Why pitch to Inge when you got Granderson coming up with 2 outs?" Never thought I'd say such a thing.

It's been a down year for centerfielders as a whole this season. Granderson has struggled and his struggles have been matched by Sizemore as well. Upton has been bad, Wells has continued to decline, Adam Jones started hot and then disappeared. So, it's not just Granderson struggling from that position.

Grandy is having a top 10 offensive season among CF

Major League Leaderboards » 2009 » Center Feilders » Advanced Statistics | FanGraphs Baseball

and is top 10 defensively according to UZR

Major League Leaderboards » 2009 » Center Feilders » Fielding Statistics | FanGraphs Baseball

He also is 6th in WAR

Major League Leaderboards » 2009 » Center Feilders » Value Statistics | FanGraphs Baseball

He has performed below my expectations and I do expect better from him, and I'm sure he does too. But, he is still one of the top 5-10 CF in the game and in the prime of his career. He will bounce back and make adjustments like he always has.

Granderson has a .902 OPS vs RHP so there is reason to be confident with him up there vs a RHP. However, he has a .505 vs. LHP which gives him probably the biggest platoon split of any regular in the majors. They can't really do a strict platoon without getting a right-handed hitter who can play CF but they need to limit his at bats vs. LHP as much as possible.

According to the clutch stat at FanGraphs, he is above average in clutch situations. He also has a better OPS with RISP than he does not RISP. This makes sense to me because I seem to remember him getting clutch hits early in the season, Every part of his game is fine except hitting LHP. This admittedly is a big problem though and it needs to be addressed

Fangraphs should spend less time with wOBA and more time with "i before e except after c"

That's exactly what I was gonna say. Great minds....

As far as Granderson goes, I've been disappointed in his production too - but I think we need to erase this thread completely so Lynn Henning can't see it.

Scott, we rarely disagree, but these numbers (which I quote regularly) are the equivilant of the AL Central. Grandy has been poor this year aside from hitting bases empty home runs versus RHP. The fact he ranks in the top 10 is more a reflection of how weak a season so many talented CF are having, rather than how well CG has played. It's more of " I sucked less than those other CF" type season.

I guarantee, in spite of the protests, the Tigers at least listen, to offers for CG this offseason. Right now, he is Mike Cameron, maybe worse.

I am a huge fan of the NE Patriots type roster management, with some Scotty Bowman sprinkled in. Trade them at their maiximum value, sprinkled in with a year early is better than a year late.

Fair enough. It is a weak year for CF. And, I'm sure they will listen to offers. If the right one comes along, then I wouldn't be opposed to a trade. But, given how weak the talent pool is at CF and the fact that we do have an above average one in the prime of his career, I'd have to be blown away to take the deal.

I don't advocate trading Grandy, i advocate playing Wilkin in LF, Raburn (even though his defense scares me) in CF when we face LHP........

.....THAT's our best chance to score runs, Grandy can come in as a defensive replacement late in the game after Wilkin gets a couple key hits to put us ahead in the game......like he could have done twice last night with 2-our and RISP opportunity. Grandy is an automatic out at this point vs LHP.........

If Raburn continues to hit as he has during the past month, he will play himself into a starting role on the 2010 Tigers.

Yeah, the 2010 Cuyahoga Tigers of the Teen League in Ohio. C'mon, dude can't catch a fly ball. His fielding is atrocious.

Ryan Raburn, although scary afield, is a natural born pitch killer.

Ed has stood by him through thick, thin, and a serious lack of consistent at-bats.

I think we are now seeing the real Raburn at this point, but I think he's capable of

even better numbers against RHP (if given enough playing time).

I say stick him in left, or give him significant time as the DH next season, with Clete in RF.

A better idea would be to consider acquiring another CF and moving Granderson to LF.

Well, that would be my dream scenario. With how spacious LF is in Comerica park, it would be extremely beneficial to have someone in LF with good range.

Is there a site that lists a batter's lefty-righty splits? baseballreference.com doesn't seem to have that stat.

Yes it does. There's a tab where you can check the splits for each season and for the career.

Granderson hasn't made the adjustments this year. Flat-out. It makes me sick, because I really think he could do better than this. He has easily been my most disappointing Tiger this year, and it's not even close.

He needs some kind of shake-up, because it sure looks like he's not learning anything while he continues to walk back and forth between the plate and the dugout shaking his head game-in and game-out.

Leyland still showing his stubborness again today batting Grandy 7th. A non-competitive K with runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out............again documenting the need for Wilkin to be playing LF
