Tigers acquire Jarrod Washburn for Luke French and minor leaguer

Recommended Posts

There is nothing wrong with using FIP.

However, I do not understand how he can turn around think French is just as good as Washburn. Luke French's xFIP is 5.52. He also has 29 IP in the majors.

No there isn't. But if that's all you're bothering to look at, then you're in trouble. Just because French has a 3.87 FIP right now and Washburn's is 3.75, doesn't mean they are similar pitchers.

Then again, I think he dominated the Mariners, so that's probably skewing their perception of him.

My final thoughts on the trade would be that I'm certainly not Washburn's biggest fan, and he's almost certainly going to regress, but even with that he's a nice upgrade in the back end of the rotation. Considering I don't think Luke French is anything, and Robles is a long way from MLB and not generally considered a great prospect despite his strong numbers (and they're in a pretty small sample size) it looks like a very nice trade.

Now they need to add someone who can hit, and it will be a great day.

Dombrowski's line:

“We are excited to add an established starter the caliber of Jarrod Washburn to our club,” Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said in a statement. “Washburn is having a tremendous season and he has been a quality major league starter throughout his career.”

Cracks me up.

I like this trade for the Tigers. Washburn is having his best season this year and is on a roll right now. He might not keep it up but he is a pretty solid pitcher even in a normal year. He has a 110 ERA+ lifetime. I trust him in the rotation a lot more than French.

Robles is the one that concerns me a little. He seems to have pretty big upside but he has a long way to go.

Sure. But in 3 years, are we really going to be sitting around thinking "Man I really wish we still had Luke French around!! Where oh where can we get a lefty finesse 4th starter?!?!?!"

In 3 years we're still going to have Jackson, Verlander, and Porcello and Galarraga will probably still be pitching like a 4th starter. Certainly aren't going to see the organization crippled because of this move.

I was just trying to say that you are right, Washburn does not equal French. Particuarly not in 2009.

We gave up Clete, Crosby, and Iorg.

I know this was five pages back but I just got back and went from excited to terrified back to excited when i saw your post.

Right. I was elaborating the point, not disagreeing with you. :glasses:

The Tigers have acquired Jarrod Washburn from the Seattle Mariners today for pitchers Lucas French and Mauricio Robles. The 34 year old Washburn is having his best year as a Major Leaguer posting a 2.64 ERA and 79/33 K/BB ratio so far. He doesn't walk or strikeout many batters and puts the ball in play. Thus, he needs a strong defense to be successful. He had that with the Mariners and should

The Detroit Tigers have agreed to acquire left-handed staring pitcher Jarrod Washburn in exchange for left-handed starter Luke French and minor league left-hander Mauricio Robles.

Keep in mind Washburn is a fly ball pitcher and Seattle has one of the best defensive outfield's in baseball. There is a reason Washburn has been so successful this year. The Tigers have two very good outfielders in Thomas and Granderson but we need to find a third to start when Washburn is pitching. Actually, we just need to find a third in general...for all our starting pitchers.

Commentary: Losing Robles could be costly for Tigers

Tigers fans should delight in the Jarrod Washburn trade.

For the next two months.

After that, prepare to take a long, anguished bite on a lead bullet, because Mauricio Robles has a chance at being for Seattle what Jair Jurrjens has been for the Atlanta Braves.

Robles, a left-hander, is that good.

Fans don't pay much attention to the minor leagues, particularly to the lower rungs, but they should -- and for this reason.

Robles is 20 years old. He was promoted earlier this year from Single A West Michigan to Single A Lakeland. That's a big step for a kid who can't yet buy a drink.

And yet he has flourished. He has 40 strikeouts in 35 innings and only 14 walks. He had a 4-2 record and a 3.60 earned-run average.

He would have been pitching next year at Double A Erie and probably a year or so later in Detroit, barring injury.

That's why the Mariners happily sent Washburn to Detroit rather than bite on any of the other drooling suitors who wanted to pry away Washburn for the remainder of this season (he becomes a free agent this autumn).

The Mariners wanted Robles. Luke French, the other pitcher the Tigers included in today's deal, is a solid, light-tossing finesse pitcher who has a role in the big leagues, probably in long relief.

But it was Robles that made today's deal possible. And it will be Robles that Tigers fans may dread having lost in the years ahead.
