If Clete Thomas hits at all in the second half, we win this thing.

To be fair, Thomas has a OPS+ of 88 this year and 96 for his career. I'm not saying can't be or won't be an improvement over Maggs, but it's hard to get excited over this change in the line-up. I mean, Thomas isn't exactly an offensive juggernaut, nor does he ever project to be.

I think the comment you are quoting was meant as sarcasm.

Not necessarily. If we get anyone outside of Granderson, Inge, Thames and Cabrera to hit in the second half, we win. Whether that's Magglio, Laird, Clete Thomas, Josh Anderson or someone else is immaterial.

Frankly, whoever it is that does the hitting, I'd prefer it to be someone who is better at defense than Maggs (like Clete Thomas) and won't lock us in to a $15 million contract next year (also Clete Thomas).

If they release him, the Tigers pay him what's left of this years salary plus a 3 million dollar buyout.

Thanks.

I read Shelton's great post on all this, thinking that it was all but accurate, but then read other people in game threads say another...

According to Beck's Twitter, Clete and Magglio will be platooning.

Beck's Blog: Magglio to platoon with Thomas

Magglio to platoon with Thomas

Now we know where Clete Thomas' playing time will come: It'll be from what Magglio Ordonez had been getting. Magglio isn't in the lineup today, and manager Jim Leyland said this afternoon that he's going to platoon Thomas and Ordonez, with Thomas batting against right-handed starters and Ordonez facing lefties.

"I would definitely call it a platoon," Leyland said. "I would not call it benched."

Ordonez didn't really want to call it much, saying it's out of his control.

"I have to produce first," he said.

TIGERS

1. Granderson, CF

2. Polanco, 2B

3. Cabrera, 1B

4. Thames, DH

5. Thomas, RF

6. Inge, 3B

7. Anderson, LF

8. Laird, C

9. Santiago, SS

P: Luke French

ROYALS

1. David DeJesus, LF

2. Willie Bloomquist, SS

3. Billy Butler, 1B

4. Jose Guillen, RF

5. Brayan Pena, DH

6. Mark Teahen, 3B

7. Miguel Olivo, C

8. Alberto Callaspo, 2B

9. Ryan Freel, CF

P: Zack Greinke

I think it confirms that they are considering keeping him but I don't think it rules out a release. I think it's a complex situation.

I don't think it confirms anything. What are they supposed to say, if he can't hit .. he's gone. I don't think that'd help much either.

If they actually stick with the platoon with Mags being on the weak side he's probably not going to hit the at-bat incentive for 2010.

The first time he goes 3-4 with a HR against some weak lefty, you know Leyland will start him the next 7 days....oh wait, that's not gonna happen, so you're right

So can anyone bust out the numbers of how many at bats could reasonably be expected for Maggs if he is only expected to be playing against lefties? How many at bats are typical in a lefty/righty split?

25% of remaining PAs and starts, roughly

There should be about 25 starts left against lefties if the split is similar to the first 84 games. So roughly 100 PA's.

That's if he plays the whole game in the games he starts. I imagine he will be lifted for defensive purposes or when the opposing teams go to their pen with a righty at least a couple of games.

If Maggs doesn't hit any better than he is now, once Guillen returns, there is no guarantee he will play at all.

Raburn,Thames and Guillen would likely occupy RF/LF/DH.

Yep. This too.

I think it's fair to say Maggs won't be back next season. And they will accomplish this without threat of any grievances.

The one thing I have noticed, and I have been keeping an eye on it recently, is that Leyland does not seem to replace Magglio in the field late in the game if he is due to bat in the next half inning.

So I don't know how many plate appearances will be saved by benching him in favor of a defensive replacement for the rest of the season, but I suspect that number to be less than 10.

That's true, but he'll probably get some late inning pinch hitting duties as well that would even it out.

Not as much to even it out, I don't think.

I doubt Magglio will be lifted very often late in games, few managers remove a player defensively when he's likely to get another at bat in the game unless you're Jim Leyland and the player is Marcus Thames

Perhaps there's another way to go about this. I think Maggs has an option left (but can't access Edman's blog to confirm it). So what if you option him to Toledo. Tell him that you want him to get 100-125 PA's there to improve his swing and "get right".

First thing that does is minimize his ability to reach his PA target for vesting, even if you bring him back up later in the season. I'm pretty sure minor league PAs won't count toward the vesting option...

Second thing is that maybe, just maybe, he can actually work through his problems in an environment with less pressure. I doubt it but not out of the realm of possibility.

Third, if he doesn't come out of his funk, you can then release him with very good "cause"... hey, if you can't perform in AAA, hard to win a grievance filing.

But even more, as a player with 5+ years service time, Maggs can decline the option and become a FA. And I think this is a strong possibility he'd choose to become a FA. I'm not 100% sure what happens then from a contractual standpoint. But it's hard to file a grievance if the player is the one that elected to become a FA (i.e. we didn't designate him, he elected it). Probably we are simply on the hook for 2009 and maybe the $3M buyout. But maybe not even that much.

Refusing assignment and declaring free agency are different animals. He can refuse assignment and just stays on the roster and payroll. It's possible this has already happened, actually.

I don't expect this platoon arrangement to last long. The Thomas part of it might last but I think Ordonez will start getting at bats against RHP either as a DH or as a RF with Thomas moving over to left some games. Leyland is not going to use Anderson against all RHP and he is just as likely to choose Ordonez as Raburn with a RHP on the mound. He might not get regular duty but I don't see him being confined to a strict platoon for long.
