The Tigers need SOMETHING, that's for sure. Let's hope Dombrowski can pull the trigger on SOMETHING before we become sellers...

Seriously..what are we selling?? that somebody is buying?? Polanco..we're selling Polanco regardless of where we are in the standings..what else??

Dakota tribal wisdom says that when you discover you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount. However, in business we often try other strategies with dead horses, including the following:

1. Buying a stronger whip.

2. Changing riders.

3. Say things like, "This is the way we have always ridden this horse."

4. Appointing a committee to study the horse.

5. Arranging to visit other sites to see how they ride dead horses.

6. Increasing the standards to ride dead horses.

7. Appointing a tiger team to revive the dead horse.

8. Creating a training session to increase our riding ability.

9. Comparing the state of dead horses in todays environment.

10. Change the requirements declaring that "This horse is not dead."

11. Hire contractors to ride the dead horse.

12. Harnessing several dead horses together for increased speed.

13. Declaring that "No horse is too dead to beat."

14. Providing additional funding to increase the horse's performance.

15. Do a Cost Analysis study to see if contractors can ride it cheaper.

16. Purchase a product to make dead horses run faster.

17. Declare the horse is "better, faster and cheaper" dead.

18. Form a quality circle to find uses for dead horses.

19. Revisit the performance requirements for horses.

20. Say this horse was procured with cost as an independent variable.

21. Promote the dead horse to a supervisory position.

I got a chuckle out of this.

He actually had an .850 OPS outside Coors from 2006-08, and this year he has an .850 OPS outside Oakland...

I think he'd be an OK trade... but I'd wait until the deadline to find out more info (on both Holliday and internal options)... and then, NOT "trade the farm" for him if we needed to. "C" prospects, not "C+ to B+" prospects.

If that's not good enough to get him... then C'est la vie.

Right. I know .850 is actually above average, but it's not really exceptional. Not worth what it would cost to get him, I'd imagine.

I personally don't have a problem with any thread. I just like dead horses.

Depends on the cost.

NO "Depends" jokes either, please...

Trigger actually died before Roy and Dale did; they had him stuffed. No word on whether they beat him after that.

It has been reported that a friend of Roy's, Alex Karras, performed pro bono beatings.

What's really the most annoying about this forum is: The folks that continually complain and try to "police" it. That complaining attitude is truly the "beating of the dead horse". If you don't like the thread, ignore it.

I'm thinking a sense of humor detector may be the perfect 2009 Christmans gift...

Yes, he liked to get started on the horse before it was actually dead.

regarding the thread topic: Dunn has a nice bat and gets on base a lot, but if we're going to go after a hitter, I'd rather it not be a one-dimensional DH-type who can't field.

I'd prefer Ichiro! :classic:

Just kidding...Dunn would be great in our lineup, but I just don't think he's the best fit for this team. Don't get me wrong: If we can't get anyone else, I'd love to have him, as long as the price isn't too steep.

But in Comerica Park, we really should be hoarding good, speedy fielders who are gap-type hitters, not one-dimensional sluggers.

I agree but those type of players are hard to find and even harder to pry away from another team. I say give Wilken Ramirez and Casper Wells a chance to play the corner outfield spots for awhile and see what happens. They both have speed and power and I think Wells is a very good fielder. I realize they are not left handed hitters but their skills could give us a good chance to win.

Well beggers can't be choosers, for one.

More importantly though, we don't really have DH anyway. Someone's gotta play the position, and Dunn is way ahead of someone like Marcus Thames. And then maybe Marcus plays left and you deal with the fact that he doesn't play defense that is that great, but it's good enough. I feel like as long as you have quality defenders in CF and RF, you can deal with a subpar LF, if it means greatly improved offense. Of course, this implies that once Dunn is aboard, you are releasing Magglio (and you should).

I don't subscribe to the idea that because Comerica Park has deep alleys, we should focus on a certain type of hitter. Just get me good hitters, and they'll produce runs.

But Adam Dunn just clogs the basepaths.

Give me the speedy guy that gets on base 10% less but will take that extra base on a base hit every time.

How on Earth is Adam Dunn a bad fit for a team that has three players with an OPS greater than .700?

Adding a guy like Dunn would be great for this team. Moving Grandy back to leadoff, Miggy hitting #3 where he should, with Dunn 4th. I'd take that.

Dunn is actually starting to become a good fit for the Tigers. If Ordonez & Guillen are soon gone or done for the year, then Dunn fits right in. Thames could also be gone end of season. Dunn becomes the primary DH.
