Oakland looking to trade Matt Holliday?? Tigers should get him

Recommended Posts

I just heard on the radio 97.1 about an hour ago that Oakland is looking to trade Matt Holliday. The radio host was talking about the Tigers going after him. What would it take to get him? Would he help?

It would take a lot to get him, and I don't think he'd help that much. The only positional upgrades I can see the Tigers going after are second base and maybe catcher. Even those are a stretch.

Holliday's offensive stats are inflated because of playing in Colorado, if I remember correctly he didn't do much away from Coors Field. I don't think the Tigers are in need of another left fielder.

The As gave up Huston Street (closer-caliber reliever), Greg Smith (#4-5 starting pitcher), and Carlos Gonzalez (quality CF prospect). We would have to give up at least that to get him.

Agreed, we don't need him. Although, he was still a quality player on the road.

86 it, we don't need him. The same rumor floated around last year of us getting Holliday. And last year, it would've actually made sense.

It wasn't Mike Valenti was it? The same guy who was furious after we didn't make a bid for Man Ram..

I also think his offensive stats were inflated due to HGH.......he looks like someone let the air out of the balloon as he used to look like a specimen, but, now looks like a normally built major leaguer. I bet you dollars to donuts he was on something and now he's not!!!

I can't see Polanco being replaced during the season unless there was a very unusual opportunity. His defense is too important to trade for a small offensive upgrade. I don't see Laird being replaced either, although Ryan may come up and take some of his at bats. I think the only move they might make is to acquire another reliever.

Actually, even adjusting for Coors, Holliday's performance has been quite good the last few years. From 2006 to 2008, Holliday's OPS+ ranked 10th in the majors, the rough equivalent of Ryan Howard, Jim Thome, David Wright and ... Miguel Cabrera. So while he did have a better performance at home than away, he wasn't chopped liver outside of Denver.

Not only that, but I don't think anyone expects Polanco to continue at a 74 OPS+ pace, any more than they expect Ordonez to continue at a 79 OPS+ pace.

Dude's a free agent after the year... pass.

Exactly. Plus, the only way the Tigers could afford Holliday was if Ordonez wasn't going to be brought back next season.

I think that the Tigers dont have a glaring need to upgrade anywhere unless a injury comes up. Maybe another bullpen stopper since you never know how long Zumaya will stay healthy but Lyon has done a good job of late and may not be a need to upgrade anymore.

Willis, and Bonderman should be enough for our rotation. Maybe just look to add depth but I dont think were positioned badly even depth wise.

I don't think the Tigers need Holliday atm, and not for what Colorado would probably be looking for.

That's probably a good thing since he plays for Oakland. :classic:

Mike Valenti is a joke of a "radio personality," this is the same guy who swears that the Tigers starting pitching staff is the worst in the AL Central, despite all of their numbers being better than everyone in Cleveland's rotation and Kansas City's rotation sans Greinke and Lee.

Brainfart. I totally meant Oakland too.

Also, we might as well stay far away from Billy Beane.

This might be a good time to go after Beltre. He could be a good buy low candidate. He has more upside than Inge at the plate and might be his equal defensively.

Your kidding right? Inge is the best third baseman in the AL right now, with only A-Rod (whose been suspended) and Longoria in the picture. Beltre is having a sub par season both offensivly and defensivly. Beltre is also older then Inge, do you know what upside even is?

Inge is having a second career year and is among the league leaders in a few catagorys.

I think theres a friggin big portrait of Longoria and on the side, a little picture of Inge. But at least they are on the same wall.

Haha really? Valenti banned me a couple weeks ago just because I disagreed with him on the subject. He could dish insults but couldn't take them...the ban was over at the beginning of the month I think but I won't go back to that sh*thole. This site actually has knowledgeable people and no power-hungry mods.

Thanks for the support though. I see you've done a good job.

Valenti just tries to change his argument up with every new post, making some new claim...but then if other people do the same, he jumps all over them, calls them names, etc, etc.

You'd think someone on the radio would actually act in a professional manner and discuss things in a civil manner as well. Instead, Valenti whines and calls people names like he's a 6th grader.
