Cutler to the Bears

Bears get their quarterback in trade for Cutler

April 2, 2009

BY MIKE MULLIGAN

The Bears acquired quarterback Jay Cutler today for No. 1 draft picks in 2009 and 2010, a No. 3 pick this year and Kyle Orton, the Sun-Times has learned.

The Bears receive the Broncos' fifth-round draft pick this year.

Cutler, 25, is coming off a Pro Bowl season with the Broncos, but he became disgruntled and wanted a trade after learning Denver was considering a deal for quarterback Matt Cassel.

If they gave up 2 1sts, a 3rd, and Orton....then WOW I'm happy we didn't make the trade. Stafford will befine with me...

looks like a 5th too

+1 If the Lions weren't the worst team ever, I could see giving up that much. But that is just way too much to give up for one player.

I'm not complaining.

And people were saying we could get Cutler for the 20th pick?

because the bears overpayed

Will they give up as much as they gave to the Seahawks for Mirer?

That was a great trade (for us!).

What do you think a reasonable trade for Cutler would have looked like? Let's assume that this trade is unreasonable, which is what everyone seems to be thinking.

I'm no NFL insider so I'm interested in what everyone thinks.

I'm not an Orton fan but he seemed to turn a corner last year and played well. They didn't really need a new, star QB for that price.

The Bears pick is the 18th overall.

I'd say #1, #20, both 3rds, and a player. Glad we stayed away.

Oh, you said reasonable. Are we talking from the Bears or Lions?

No, no, no. Broncos gave back the 3rd to the Bears. Two 1st round picks and Orton for Cutler and a 3rd. That's what I'm hearing.

+1. I hope he destroys the Bears franchise and throws costly picks to lose pivotal games.

What a steal for the Bears.

So if we had kept Kitna, do you think we could have swung the deal? Hmmm...
