Detroit (18-55)(Cornejo 3-5/4.06) VS. Boston (42-32) (Lowe 7-3/4.57) 7:05 p.m. EDT

Recommended Posts

Detroit Tigers (18-55) at Boston Red Sox (42-32), 7:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Detroit - Nate Cornejo (3-5, 4.06)

Boston - Derek Lowe (7-3, 4.57)

(Sports Network) - The Detroit Tigers attempt to halt a three-game slide on

Tuesday when they take on the Boston Red Sox in the second of a four-game

series at Fenway Park.

Detroit, which owns the worst record in baseball (18-55), has dropped 15 of

its last 17 games overall and is coming off a 3-1 setback to the Red Sox in

the series opener on Monday.

Kevin Millar homered and finished with two hits and two RBI to lead Boston.

Manny Ramirez, who went 0-for-11 in his previous two games, scored a run on

two hits for the Red Sox, who halted a two-game skid.

Tim Wakefield (6-3) earned his first win since May 26 when he defeated the

Yankees. On Monday, Wakefield tossed six shutout innings and surrendered only

four hits and two walks, while striking out five, but was forced to leave the

contest with a lower back strain.

Boston sits in third in the AL East, but trails the first-place Yankees by

only two games.

Alex Sanchez posted two hits and an RBI for the Tigers.

Jeremy Bonderman (2-11) joined fellow Tiger starter Mike Maroth (2-11) in the

11-loss club after allowing two runs on eight hits in six innings of work.

Bonderman has now lost his last four starts and hasn't won since May 4

Taking the hill for the Tigers on Tuesday is Nate Cornejo, who has dropped his

last two starts and is winless in his past seven outings (0-3). His last

victory came on May 11 against Tampa Bay.

In his last start, Cornejo suffered the loss against Cleveland Thursday. He

was tagged for six runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings, while walking one and

striking out one.

Cornejo failed to record a decision in his only previous career start against

the Red Sox, allowing two runs in five frames.

Derek Lowe counters for Boston on Tuesday looking to win his fifth straight

decision. The righthander is unbeaten in his last seven outings, with his last

loss coming on May 11 against Minnesota.

In his most recent start, Lowe failed to earn a decision against the White Sox

Thursday. He allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits in six innings,

while walking three and striking out two.

Lowe has dominated the Tigers his career, going 3-0 with a 1.15 ERA in 23

appearances -- four starts.

The Tigers are just 12-26 on the road this season, while Boston is 23-11 at

home.

UPN 50 sucks. Munson with a great play at 3rd, and they can't get the footage queued up in time for a replay. And they've got Beckman.

Sucks!

I have the feeling that this will be NATO's last start in the majors for a while. He has been so bad for his last few weeks that I don't think that Trammell and DD will put up with him anymore. Unless NATO is lights out tonight, I expect he is on his way to Toledo. 1 k per game is just plain absurd. This guy has 15 K's all season. That tells you about this guy's stuff. JK

Why NATO sucks. He gets an 0-2 count on a batter then dicks around until the count goes to 3-2 then gives up a laser shot. The guy is a moron. Warm up the bus for Toledo. JK

The MLB broadcast must be about two minutes behind. Damon is at the plate as I am typing this. He apparently has been out for a long time on a fly out. More good work from Bud. JK

So sorry, Biff. Let me try to make this better for you. NATO brilliantly holds Nixon to only a single after making him wait while he threw three balls. Very crafty play for NATO. A lesser man could not have accomplished that! Go Tigers! JK
