Zetterberg - 12 year extension

Recommended Posts

What's with NHL teams signing players to a double-digit extensions nowadays?

I thought the Islanders signing DiPietro was absurd to begin. Then, there was the Caps signing Overchekin.

It's a good signing, but I would never sign anyone for that many years no matter how good that player is. 6 or 7 is one thing, but 12? What if he gets hurt or can't play again?

I think they do that so they can heavily front load it then the cap hit is evened out at the end of the contract and its good for the player because if they retire early they are losing less money because back end is low numbers

Then you take no cap hit and probably cash in on the insurance you took out for the contract. Those risks are no different than in your 6 or 7 year contract scenario, but in your scenario you lose about 2-3 million in cap space.
