Albert Haynesworth vs Julius Peppers

Recommended Posts

If you had to pick only one for the lions to sign this off season who would it be? They are both free agents, one is the nasty inside guy the other is the freakishly athletic de. Who would you guys want the have?

Signing Haynesworth and either Crowder or Vilma for MLB would dramatically change our drafting strategy.

I would say neither. Haynesworth's and Peppers best days are behind them and we would be paying for what they have done in the past. I feel we need to build thru the draft. We are not in a position to make a run at the Super Bowl so I feel these moves would be a waste of cap space. I say developing young talent is our only option.

Hayneworth..younger and big need for us imo. Would like both but not worth breaking the bank over. We are not going to be good for a couple years at best I think. Peppers will be on the downslide by then.

If they both come out in the same year, and peppers is only a year older, why would only Peppers be on the downslide then and not Haynesworth?

I agree for the most part, but the Lions need to become more competitive at stopping the run before they can compete at the NFL level. This would also enhance their draft, since I don't believe BJ Raji would be available at #20, and Laurinaitis would be. That's a huge couple of adds to the defense, and then they can look for the best talent on the board after that. The Lions pass rush would also improve with Haynesworth taking on double teams every week. And I think he'd love to play indoors.

Cruzer what do you think of Peria Jerry or William Moore at #20? I would love to have a guy like Moore. If we could somehow trade down and still get Aaron Curry, now that would be my ideal draft. Curry and DT or Mr. Moore and then OL in 2nd round.

Moore won't be there at 20.

Jerry isn't the kind of DT we need...he's more of a speed technique type. We need a run stuffer...he's got a small frame and isn't very strong, not a good fit. Plus he has injury issues.

I really don't see a DT I feel comfortable with taking in the first round, most are undersized for our needs and we can get better value for one of our other holes that at 20. I'm looking MLB, OT, DE at 20 in that order, depending on who falls.

Haynesworth for the Lions.. at DE we at least have prospects/suspects! At DT, we have no one we can count on!

yeah, i agree white is really not too bad at de or cliff avril

Ok...a complete and utter pipe dream, I know. But... Peppers wants to play 3-4 OLB now so if Schwartz is impatient and Mayhew has the testes...here's a scenario.

  • Schwartz convinces Haynesworth to come and be our 3-4 NT...and the highest paid non-QB in the league
  • Peppers--who will be franchised--will command multiple 1st rounders to sign. Give up the #1 this year and a first rounder next year

This would leave us with a D-line of Haynesworth, Redding, White and an LB corps of Peppers, Avril, Lenon, Dizon.

I personally am of the notion that Sims (6'0" 225) might fit better at SS in the 3-4 (Polamalu is 5'10" 207)

With pick #20, draft the best DB on the board to start along side Bodden (DJ Moore? Sean Smith?) at #33 pick the best LB (Clint Sintim?)

I know that's a lot of movement and a total pipe dream. We would still have holes and problems on offense, but it would be one killer defensive corps.

Never in a million years. This way we might be average next year, but only to suck just as bad as this year for the next decade.

Naw, any GM who had the cohones to do this would be smart enough to draft talent around it. Schwartz has had a lot of skill finding late rounders who contribute. Peppers has 4-5 years left, Haynesworth has 5-6.

I'm not saying this is the scenario that I would strive for or my #1 choice (obviously i'm a big draft guy) basically these were my musings on the crapper after reading DVOs sunday column.

In the end, we would have a five year window with a potentially top-10 defense to build around. It would get younger guys like Avril, Dizon and Francis on the field and maximize their talent.

Redding would look more like the player that his contract shows him to be if he had Haynesworth next to him.

Unless Mayhew/Luwand and convince me they can get one of these guys long term, I would be against this though. Not saying it's impossible, but I don't show us going to the playoffs next year so why waste the cap space. Who knows, maybe we different needs 2-3 years down the road and no longer have the cap space to go out and get this type of opportunity when we need it.

I'd be extremely comfortable with BJ Raji. He's a beast. He won't be there at 20. William Moore's stock is falling, he's not great in space. He's one dimensional, and will have to run well. I agree about Jerry, although he'd be the best 3 technique the Lions would have.

Few free agents could improve our team as much as Haynesworth could. If there was one thing I grew tired of seeing by Thanksgiving day, it was our defensive tackles getting moved ten yards off the line of scrimmage in either direction on every other play.

I still see Moore as the best safety in this class...I'd like to see more on him tho. I think someone will reach on him...Mays and Rolle really helped his stock by staying in school.

I would love to get Haynesworth. Is he eligible to be franchised again? Also, I think Haynesworth has had some off the field issues in the past. That is something to be concerned about.
