Who will be our starting QB?

Recommended Posts

I'm really at a lose here... who should be our starting QB? I know... I know... we still have a lot of time to see what happenes in the practice and pre-season before a final decision is made, but if 'Weg's got an idea who he wants to be the starter you know he's going to get more attention, reps, personal attention, etc.

Frankly, I'm very much up in the air here. McMahon showed some real spark last year in limit time. He's smooth and quick in the back field, and while perhaps a little too likely to scramble, he's usually thinking pass-first, run-if-I-have-too, which is, in my opinion, what you want in a fleet-footed QB.

On the other hand, McMahon was never more than 50% on his completion rate...not in College or in the Pros.

Harrington comes loaded with talent and potential. He's got all the leadership qualities, but he's a rookie. He's only now learning the WCO, and while he may not be stone footed, he certainly does not have McMahon's speed.

I just don't know who the best option is really, and while I would like to see them compete for the starting job, I would not like to be going into the fourth preseason game wondering who the starter is going to be the season opener. A decision has to be made before that time so that that QB can get the time needed to become comfortable with his offense, and so they can become comfortable with him.

So, if you had to choose now (which, thankfully we don't) who would it be? McMahon or Harrington...Harrington or McMahon? I just don't know....

I choose McMahon. He reminds me of Favre except he's faster.

I agree Jake. I was dissapointed with the selection of Harrington because I think McMahon has the chance to be something special. I'm sorry, but I don't think Harrington is all he's cracked up to be. Like I've said before, he reminds me so much of Rob Johnson.

Both quarterbacks are virtually rookies,so whoever plays best will start. There won't be any of that salary or experience thing to muddy up the decision making process, just who plays better.

Mac has some good physical skills, but was lacking in accuracy and had a little happy feet thing going.I don't like guys who at the first sign of a tackler take off running.I just worry he isn't making his reads fast enough and then feeling pressured to run. That goes to his decision making ability which has to be quick in this offense. But on the plus side he has some leadership ability.

Harrington I have no idea how he will do,as I have not seen him play. But others all seem to be in agreement that he is very accurate and a leader on the field.

Here's hoping they both do well,as qbs rarely make it through a full season anymore. It will be nice to have a quality guy who can come in and realisticly get a win.

The Fords just might force coach Morninweg to play Harrington if he shows in preseason that he's not too far behind McMahon.

Of coarse, if they are both equally good, one might become trade bait for a high pick in next season's draft. If they both suck, there's always Driesbach.;)

I'm pretty sure that Mornhinweg plans to do with Harrington what he did with McMahon, but at an accelerated rate. Harrington is the Lions QB of the future, there's no chance of McMahon being that. If Harrington outplays McMahon by a large margin (and I think he will), then Harrington will be the starter from day 1.

McMahon, while I like him, is an injury waiting to happen. He is pretty darn reckless out there (Detmer was the starter in the last game of the year). I think there are visions of Charlie-itis dancing in the GM's head.

I think McMahon starts the year at QB and for anyone to say that he has no chance to be the QB of the future is simply ridiculous. (ex. Gus Frerotte and Heath Shuler) McMahon has some experience and should start because he is more familiar with the playbook than Harrington. I also think that Harrington is the real deal, but that doesnt mean you just hand him the job. They should get about the same number of snaps in practice at first, then see how it goes afterwards. If Harrington accelerates alot then he could pass McMahon, but if not, I have no problem letting McMahon run the offense this whole season.

This is my guess...

I think it's McMahon's job going in but it won't take much for Harrington to take it away. If he outperforms McMahon it's his job. It's not like McMahon has that much experience over Harrington.

And while McMahon had moments of promise he also showed why he was a below 50% thrower at the college level at other times. McMahon has not been a winner in the past and that's a pretty solid intangible if the talent question comes out equal.

This definitely will be one of the stories during the training camp.

As long as Demter gets cut before the season starts I'm happy. Between McMahon, Harrington, and Dreisbach. Harrington should be the last choice. The Lions need to come out of the gate quick and the odds are against Harrington doing that. Right now I give McMahon the nod.

Does anyone expect this team to have a drastically different result from last year's team? No matter who starts at QB I don't see us winning more than 5-6 games. If this prediction is the opinion of the Lions staff, Harrington will start....similiar to what Manning did!

I believe the M&M boys aren't as worried about a winning team this year as they are in making a winning team in the next 2-3 years. It would be nice, but no one expects it and it would be much easier to let a rookie screw up and learn while building through the draft than to try and make a team full of holes into a winning machine!

Folly nailed it.

McMahon starts, if only because of his 1 year knoxledge of WCO. I would expect Harrington soon though because McMahon WILL get hurt, either holding the ball too long, or getting leveled scrambling.

Heck even if McMahon does not get hurt Id expect to see some of Harrington by game 10.

My only request...tie cinder blocks to Detmer and toss him in the river. The only way he should play is if BOTH Mc and Harrington get hurt.

Based on pics from the current ota's available on the team website, Harrington is working with the 1st team, McMahon is working with the 2d team. John Clayton is also reporting that Harrington has "badly outplayed" McMahon, and obviously will be starting sooner than later. The best player must play, and obviously the best player here is Harrington.
