Notice that Crosby.gif and the Pens are mentioned first, ahead of the Wings, by a Canadian media outlet.

The league released the schedule for the 2008-09 season on Thursday, and for the second straight year, the NHL season will open on European soil.

Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins will face Daniel Alfredsson and the Ottawa Senators for a pair of games in Stockholm, Sweden on October 4th and 5th, while Vincent Lecavalier and the new-look Tampa Bay Lightning face the New York Rangers in Prague, Czech Republic on the same dates.

The Detroit Red Wings will raise the 11th Stanley Cup banner in franchise history on October 9th as they begin their Cup defence against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Wings will also be involved in one of the most anticipated games of the season as they travel to Chicago on New Year's day to face the Blackhawks in the NHL's Winter Classic at Wrigley Field.

Montreal will once again be a hockey hotbed as the Canadiens will host the NHL's All-Star Weekend on January 24th and 25th as well as the NHL Entry draft on June 25th and 26th.

The Habs will open the season on the road in Buffalo on October 10th with their home opener at the Bell Centre on October 15th against the Boston Bruins.

After watching the Red Wings hoist their banner, the Maple Leafs return home to host the Canadiens on October 11th.

Meanwhile the Leafs cross-province rivals the Ottawa Senators will return from their European sojourn in time to host the Red Wings in their home opener, also on the 11th.

The Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks will open their seasons with a home-at-home sereis. The Canucks open their season at home on the 9th, followed by a trip to Calgary on the 11th.

The Edmonton Oilers will kick off their campaign on the 12th as they host Ryan Smyth and the Colorado Avalanche.

The new scheduling matrix will see each team play six games against every team in their own division (24 games), four games against the non-division teams within its conference (40 games), plus 18 non-Conference games, including at least one game against each club in the other conference (15 games) and three home-and-home series against non-Conference teams.

The regular season concludes April 12 and the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin April 15.

Other games of note include the Hall of Fame game on November 8th between the Canadiens and Maple Leafs in Toronto.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will get a shot at revenge against the Red Wings on November 11th as the Pens travel to the Motor City to face Marian Hossa and the Winged Wheel.

One of the most exciting days of the year should be February 21st for Hockey Day in Canada as all six Canadian teams square off against each other.

...and the Wings raise the banner in front of the Leafs. Not only should it be a win, but there is a measure of rubbing salt in the wounds of Leaf fans.
