DirecTv, Dish, or Cable?

Recommended Posts

BB - I had success with my phone call to Directv. I was able to get $120 knocked off the Sunday Ticket and had the Sunday Ticket To-Go (online and phone access) package removed for another $50 savings.

My total price for Sunday Ticket will be $180. It's still a lot more than the Dish/Cable red Zone price, but I get to keep the convenience of not switching companies which makes my wife and kids happy (priceless!!)

They still do not offer just the Red Zone a la carte on Directv.

If you call, I used the automated system to get a human by saying "cancel" when prompted for the reason for my call.

Good luck.

I got shot down. The operator said they have no discounts on the NFL package. It was $320. I was hoping to get the $180 deal!! CRAP!!

+1 (have had this arrangement for 6 years now)

I don't think I'll ever switch from DirecTV unless I'm really wronged and can no longer negotiate with them. We just recently restructured our contract with them because we just updated two of our TVs. Online they were offering new customers a free HD DVR and free HD receiver along with free HD FOR LIFE and free whole-home DVR service if you got the Choice package. I called them out on this, and after some time on the phone and speaking with a "retention specialist", we got this deal except for the HD for life, although I did manage to get it free for at least two years. I guarantee you I will be on the phone with them in two years to get this again.

As for Comcast, I just cannot find a reason to change my existing service with them. Their cable TV packages that I would be interested in would be far more than what I pay for DirecTV.

FiOS isn't in our area, and I have just heard too many negative things about Dish to want to switch.

How much longer are they going to charge extra for HD?? I would think in the next 2-3 years, 90% of the tv's out there will be HD televisions.....especially as cheap as they have become.

Are there still people out there that don't have an HD tv? Regardless, they don't make in SD televisions anymore, so it will go the way of the black and white tv soon!

They all suck. If I could I would just watch over-the-air channels and catch online streams of shows and sporting events. Unfortunately I am stuck in a contract with Dish Network for one more year.

I don't watch much tv, but I do have many people come over my house. So I got it just for that.

I signed a 2 year contract, so we will see how much I like it.

I'm getting a REALLY good deal compared the to cable deals, but I have to ride it out for 2 years.

I took advantage of the free HD for two years....saves $10 per month. It was hardly worth the bother as they require you to sign up for direct charge to your credit card and they botched that up royally. They kept sending me emails that I had not signed up for credit card charges, I call the CSR told them I did that the first day, and then verify that and say all is OK. Well that has happened three more times and few weeks ago they informed me that I was behind on my payments. I was livid as you might imagine. Supposedly everything is fixed now. In any case, I hate DirecTV. I'd go with Dish if they had Extra Innings.

I keep getting these cards in the mail that I haven't signed up for auto-bill pay, but your difficulties with them on that is exactly what I emphasized to them on the phone. I asked them if I have been late with payments. They said "no". I asked them were they more concerned with getting new customers rather than keeping their loyal customers. They said "no". So I told them I wasn't signing up for auto-bill pay. If the charge shows up, I'll stay on the phone until I get it removed or I'll box up all the equipment and mail it to the president of the company's home.

I can't tell you how jealous I am of you! I've called them a few times and I can't get them to budge on the price at all!

If I could get it for less than $200, I sign up immediately!! Oh well! :hurt:

I chose the 6 payments over the next 6 months. They are giving me 6 - $20 credits off the price. So the total was close to $300 and my credits total $120 for a net $180.

I don't know why you can't get this. I did some research before calling and saw a few different forums where the technique I described in my previous post resulted in the $120 total in credits. Maybe because I have had Sunday Ticket and Extra Innings for several years, and you are attempting to get it as a first timer is the reason they will not give you the credits.????

Good luck. Stay persistent. Ask if you can purchase Red Zone Channel seperately. (You can't on DTV by the way), be a whiner, be their best friend, use your entire bag of tricks. Heck, even tell them you know they are doing it for other customers.

I did most of that, but they told me that it is a deal for previous customers only!

Someone told me to sign up, and cancel in September. They said they would probably give me the discount then. Maybe I'll try that.

I'm in the middle of an email battle with customer service. They claim that the discount does not exist. I'm thinking that they refuse to offer this discount to new customers, as it may just open the floodgates for those who are willing to pay $320 to jump on the discount.

I'm very happy with my Comcast the past week. The HD quality is better, there's a ton more channels in HD, the On Demand has a much larger library, and the DVR is bigger and more user friendly. I've also noticed faster internet. MLB Network every night, been watching hockey games on NHL Network, I have HD in my bedroom. All for $89. Can't beat it.

I have to admit this thread is making me feel better about Comcast as well. To think I was upset about paying $66 a month. I still might downgrade to the basic service for a while, but I'm definitely going to make the decision with a better attitude.

Another kudos for Directv!

I called yesterday to cancel my sports pack as I only pay for this to watch the Tigers. The AMERICAN gal I talked to asked me why I was canceling and I explained. She said how about we give it to you free for six months and will that get me to spring training? Then she saw I have been a loyal customer since 2001 and she could give me a discount on my package for three months which saved me $150 over that time.

Best provider bar none.

BUMP

After a few initial problems with AT&T U-Verse I've been very happy with the service, especially the TV & DVR. What I am not all that happy about is the $165 they charge me every month. That's almost $50 higher than it was when I signed up for it, & they are now subsidizing all these newcomers with my cash.

Seriously thinking about switching to Charter for my Internet & phone & getting DirecTV hooked up. Feedback on DirecTV?

I really like my DirecTV. Every once in a while you do get the signal to drop due to weather, but I can count on my hand how many times that has happened the past year. There customer service has been really good for the few problems I have had. The online feature lets you change your package, if you don't like something. The DirecTV app for my iphone lets me set my DVR if I'm not at home (very cool feature).

Also, if you do go with DirecTV they have a referral deal that gets both you and me $10 off a month for 10 months. So if you don't already have family or friends that have a DirecTV account, I can give you my account number and you can get the $10 a month. I'm paying about $60 a month for the middle package (mostly sports, and I don't get any premium channels) right now, and it was about $45 last year (I signed a 2 year deal that gave me a GREAT deal the first year)

Let me know if you have any questions.

What's the matter? Is it the price or service? I've got a year to go on my intro promo price of $100.

DirecTV might be slightly cheaper than Comcast, but not by a whole lot. When you add in the $50 a month I pay for my internet from the local cable company, I pay about $110 a month for 1 DVR, and 2 HD boxes that are connected to my central DVR (really cool feature). Last year I found a referral code from someone online ($10 a month credit) and had another $15 a month discount through a special promotion they were running when I signed up, so I was paying around $40 a month then.

well I was going internet only there for a while with comcast which worked out great until baseball season started, then I needed to be able to watch Tiger games. Originally this wasn't going to be an issue as I was supposed to be on night shift and therefore could just watch the Tigers on MLB.TV when I got home or whatever, but because of blackout rules you can't do that while the game is actually going. So I decided to give directv another whirl and I gotta say... I really like it. Not to mention even though my promos for the premium channels are over I kept them because it's still cheaper to do that than + have comcast internet than it was to have comcast internet + digital plus channels (2nd tier, no premium channels)

Comcast sucks. If Verizon were in Milan I'd be all over them.

I just looked and right now they got a pretty good promo going. Middle packages are $35 and $40 a month, PLUS you get Sunday Ticket free. When you throw in the referral discount of $10 a month, that is a pretty good deal for the first year. The second year goes up $15 a month though.

EDIT: Be ready though, they do have some hidden fees, so usually you pay about $10-15 more than the advertised price per month when all is said and done, but it seems that it is still about 10-15% cheaper than Comcast.

price.

I had HD DVR and another HD box, and internet. Bill was $165/month. I decreased my internet speed and got rid of channels over 100, and now its $115. But I really would like my channels back.

They'll get you after that promo deal expires. My bill was literally increasing $5/month.

ETA: I love the service though. It's very high quality, picture quality is great and the internet is blazing fast.

My main worry w/ satellite has always been being locked into a contract but the service cuts out all the time. Maybe its just paranoia.... I had uverse a while back (2006?) and it was awful, it would freeze for long periods of time. Thankfully I didn't have a contract.

Agreed, but don't use belcherboy's account as a reference because he's a big jerky poopyhead. Use mine instead.

As belcherboy mentioned above, service interruption is very minimal and usually short-lived. I have had DirecTV for the better part of 6 years and love it.

Avoid Dish Network like the plague. They're horrible and their channel line-up stinks.

Oh and belcherboy is a big jerky poopyhead.
