How is it that he's a better fit on a team with a more durable shortstop? Is it because he's not as good defensively at short and he's better used as a utility player who is not forced/tempted to be used at short all the time?

Yes, on a team where the manager trusts him to be the only backup SS he would have a lot more value. With Guillen's frequent injuries, that isn't the case with the Tigers and Leyland.

Infante may be one of the final casualties of the Randy Smith era- The kid had some really nice potential, was brought up waaaay too early- not nearly ready for that terrible team, and has never really recovered. He still shows promise at times, and maybe a change of scenery will get him the fresh start he needs. I can see him being a decent starter and #2 hitter sometime in the next 5 years. We may well see the Carlos Pena situation over again with Infante once he finally gets stuff figured out and is able to play to the potential.

I've always liked Infante, and hope wherever he goes, he has success (unless it's Cleveland, Minnesota or Chicago)

Infante wasn't DFA'd, he was sent to Toledo. Considering he is very cheap, he can still be an effective backup in Detroit this year and next. He will most certainly be brought back up in September when the rosters expand. This move is more for playoff roster implications than anything else.

In other news... Wily Mo Pena was traded to the nationals for cash and a PTBNL...

So he can sit on the bench and fail to develop there? Or will the Nats commit to playing him/tearing up his god-awful contract and letting the kid go get his head straight in AAA?

ballmich:

"Chacon is garbage. He's not an upgrade to Grilli."

Chacon: 81 Innings, ERA 4.20, 66K/40BB, WHIP 1.49

Grilli: 58 Innings, ERA 5.86, 47K/25BB, WHIP 1.61

I would consider Chacon to be an upgrade to Grilli. A significant upgrade, no, but an upgrade none the less.

I think Wilson will be a Tiger shortly. I really don't know what I think about that until I get to watch Wilson. Santiago is great defensively and really handled the pressure last year so we'll see.

K/BB tells all. Chacon is worthless. Worthlesser than Grilli.

Infante has already cleared waivers, according the the freep.

Is Jack Wilson a defensive upgrade over Carlos Guillen? Yes

Is Jack Wilson an offensive upgrade over Sean Casey? No

That trade would be a wash. Leyland was scouting the Pirates for a long time and has seen Wilson play a lot.....

Yea and Leyland Wanted Perez too..... Uggh.

I really don't think that aquiring Wilson for anything more than Monroe and Grilli would be a good idea. Wilson can play short, bunt, run a little bit, and not hit well. I don't think that he would be that much of an upgrade over Santiago, and with a big contract for the this year and next, this sounds a lot like Neifi to me. But if we could somehow get Matt Capps in the deal (:cheeky:), which would probably be impossible given that he would have to clear waivers, I would definitely give up substantial talent (Trahern, etc.) in the deal. Their other relivers don't do much for me, except maybe Torres or Marte.

It's more important than ERA and WHIP.

So just wondering by your logic Grilli is:

Equal to Al Reyes: 30BB/61K

Better than Chad Durbin: 44BB/61K

Therefore making Rafeal Betancourt the Best Reliever in baseball right now:

4BB/50K?

You are also only looking at 4 1/2 months of time. Why not take into account 2006, when Grilli was clearly better than Chacon. Guys like Chacon and Grilli can be a little better one year and completely suck the next. All in all, both are garbage, and the tide can turn pretty quickly to the extent that I don't trust Chacon at all.

I think thats because I look at Chacon as a short term solution just for this year. I mean technically speaking isnt this the same logic used to say well Monroe will come around look what he did the last half of the year. I mean I'm just looking at it like, you DFA Monroe, if you send him off and get something as an upgrade why not do it. I'm not begging for Chacon but something has to be better than Grilli :classic: . I'm also saying this not knowing what Chacon's contract situation is which would be a huge bearing on this decision.

By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Jack Wilson's head was spinning for two reasons yesterday.

One, a flurry of personnel moves in Detroit raised fresh issues about the possibility that he will be traded to the Tigers.

Two, he remained woozy from the asthma attack and heat exhaustion that knocked him out of the game -- and nearly off his feet -- Thursday night.

"Still a little bit out of it," the Pirates' shortstop described himself after he sought and received permission to arrive at the ballpark a little late yesterday afternoon, then was held out of the starting lineup. "It's happened before, but this one was tough."

Wilson, an asthmatic who always keeps an inhaler handy but seldom uses it, was reaching for it often Thursday after making three diving stops in the infield, sprinting to beat out a fielder's choice and scoring from first on a double.

After that at-bat, he needed help to get through the dugout tunnel and back to the air-conditioned clubhouse, out of the 82-degree heat and humidity.

"It was the heat more than anything, I think," Wilson said.

Manager Jim Tracy said the team would be cautious with Wilson but did not set a timetable for his return to the lineup. He had a pinch-hit double in the ninth inning last night.

On the other front: Detroit designated for assignment Craig Monroe, an outfielder the Pirates long have coveted and, possibly, sought at some point in the Wilson talks last month. That designation meant the Tigers have 10 days to trade, release or outright Monroe. Among several other moves, Detroit also recalled Ramon Santiago, a glove-first shortstop, from Class AAA Toledo.

What all that meant for Wilson was not immediately clear.

The Detroit Free Press reported that Monroe has cleared waivers -- as has Wilson -- so it could be a sign that the teams are still talking trade. Or, the recall of Santiago could mean that the Tigers have given up on a deal and will use him to spell defensively deficient Carlos Guillen at shortstop rather than Wilson.

One source on the Pirates' side strongly indicated the former is more likely than the latter, that the Wilson talks remain alive in advance of Major League Baseball's Aug. 31 deadline to add players to playoff rosters.
