Right now the Tigers have $19 million dollars in payroll on the disabled list. Another $7.25 million is tied up in the underachieving Jose Lima. With some shrewd trades or roster moves we could dump some salary and sign one or two quality free agenets this offseason. I think the majority of the people that use this forum realize Dean Palmer's career may be over. He has fought valiantly the last couple of years, but the injury bug appears to have bit him too hard. We have to find a long term solution at 3rd. Chris Truby is going to get a good, hard look at the corner this season, but if he doesn't turn out to be the glove we thought he was we need to offer Scott Rolen a lucrative contract to put him in the Old English D. He is by far the premiere 3rd sacker that will be available in the off season. If Dombrowski wanted to go a little cheaper he could try to sign Bill Mueller, otherwise give Jarrod Patterson a chance to play every day.

Higginson seems to be tired of playing in Motown. While he is aging and has a huge salary that someone will have to eat, I believe we can get a solid player in return for him. Offer Higgy to Colorado for Jack Cust. Higgy can replace Hollandsworth in the Rockies outfield and Cust can DH for us. Cust supposedly has outstanding power and can take advantage of the shorter porch in RF (I don't think we want to pursue a right handed slugger like Juan Gone). Colorado would immediately have a dynamic outfield of Walker, Pierre and Higginson. In the thin air of Colorado Higginson's numbers would return to their 2000 form when he hit .300 and smacked 30 HRs.

Since we have a surplus at catcher and 1B ship Mitch Meluskey, Randall Simon, Omar Infante and cash to Milwaukee for Ben Sheets. We'll have to give up at least this to get a quality starter like Sheets. Milwaukee is desperate for a catcher since their starter Casanova (a former Tiger) is injured and they don't have a competent backup.

Halter's comments about his recent benching probably put him on the trading block so we can package him and Steve Sparks in a deal with the Yankees for outfielder Marcus Thames. The Yanks will need another quality starter in their playoff drive and we now that Steinbrenner will do anything to put them over the top. Thames is the real deal -- a patient hitter with power whose time has come.

Our lineup becomes:

1B - Dmitri Young, 2B - Damian Jackson, SS - Ramon Santiago, 3B - Scott Rolen, C - Brandon Inge/Mike Rivera, LF - Marcus Thames, CF - Wendell Magee/Andres Torres, RF - Robert Fick, DH - Jack Cust.

SP - Jeff Weaver, Ben Sheets, Seth Greisinger, Mark Redman, Nate Cornejo. Tim Kalita, Jeff Farnsworth and Andy Van Hekken will be knocking on the door.

CP - Matt Anderson.

These moves should give us a more competitive team.

I've wanted Scott Rolen and Curt Schilling to be a Tiger for years!

When Curt Schilling wanted out of Philly, I wanted the Tigers to go for him more than anyone...they blew it.

If Rolen senses that Philadelphia isn't committed to winning, how will he view the Tigers? Not very well, probably. I can't see him even considering the Tigers.

Besides, the team has numerous holes and we'd be better served by signing multiple quality players instead of one superstar.

The Tigers lineup next year will be more like this:

1. Torres, CF

2. Fick, RF

3. Higginson, LF

4. Young, 1B

5. Munson, DH

6. Truby, 3B (until Hanahan is ready)

7. Inge, C

8. Infante, SS

9. Santiago, 2B

The rotation should be Weaver, Moehler, Cornejo, Greisinger, and Adam Bernero (whom I think will be up sooner than later if Redman continues to struggle).

See my post number 2597.3 on the message board at tigers.mlb.com for further explanation on what I was thinking by suggesting we pursue Rolen.

This is almost never true. Mid priced FA's are simply not worth the cost that is associated with them. Superstars are, because unlike mid range FA's, superstars are hard to come by. While Rolen wouldn't fix the team, two average players at 3B and CF are not as good as a superstar (Rolen) and a replacement level CF.
