Ilitchs own network?

Recommended Posts

So I am just thinking out of the box. So why shouldn't the Ilitch family create their own network. They own the two most successful teams in Detroit sports history. The wife is the primary owner of a casino.

Back to the two teams. Every large market baseball team has them and Detroit is a baseball town and was long before hockeytown. Each team is at a height of success that makes the demand high.

The hockey team may be in struggles but then again any team in the NHL would trade to be the Red Wings. The Tigers are what would sell it.

Baseball is the American sport. No salary cap and all the family worries about is a luxury tax.

With the rich history of the Tigers and Wings and Detroit is a sports town this would be a success.

be careful what you wish for. I think FSD does a terrific job, I'm not certain that we will be able to say the same of an Illitch network. My gut feeling is that we would be looking at a cable access plus caliber of production. Oh, and kiss HD TV goodbye, too. If it is anything like the Illitch run productions that I see at Comerica (you know, the who's your tiger spots between innings), we could be in for some bad TV.

Just my opinion of course, I could be wrong.

As for Pass, I think they were somehow related to WDIV (they shared a production truck, I distinctly remember seeing the PASS logo and the NBC peacock on the truck parked on the west side of tiger stadium). They used to run the Prime Sports network programing during non game times.

PASS nearly caused my wife to dump me in 1991 when she was still just my girlfriend. I learned the hard way that you should not say "Hey, I'll bet the Wings replay is on PASS" after watching a live football game at BGSU and a World Series game at a sports bar.

PASS was launched in the mid to late 80's as a premium cable channel in Detroit and the portions of Michigan that aren't Detroit. PASS had live coverage of select Tiger, Red Wing and Pistons games. It was designed to augment free coverage of those games, but eventually I think we just got to see fewer free games.

When it was a premium channel, PASS was ok...it got a whole lot better when it became a part of basic cable. They showed ECW wrestling...E-C-W, E-C-W, E-C-W.... gotta love seeing Sabu try the triple jump moonsault even if he did only manage to do it right 1/3 of the time. You had the Pistons, Wings and Tigs on.....I think the Pistons eventually weren't on it anymore...but I forget when or even if that's at all true.

PASS was bought out by Fox Sports in 1997 or 1998 when they were challenging ESPN by buying up all the "local" big league sports channels like the Prime network ...there were some who thought Fox would eventually usurp ESPN because they were buying direct access to they eyeballs of the biggest fans of the pro teams, but many of those same analysts also wore hats with earflaps and they were soon dismissed as idiots..

In my little corner of Michigan I have both FSD and the Tribe's "Sports Time Ohio" network on my basic cable. FSD is better because they show those Best Damn Hooter's bikini shows and PRIDE fighting. Sports Time Ohio winds up showing "classic" fare in the winter like 30 year old Ohio State and Notre Dame football games. They also show Cleveland All Pro Wrestling.....it's not very good.

If Ilitch tries something like that Iwill hunt him down and deliver a Crazy Bread suppository

One key thing about PASS - it was owned by then Tigers Owner John Fetzer. So the whole "owner launching a cable station" thing has been done here before.

Illitch probably saw how that ended up (PASS going from a premium station, to a basic cable station, to disappearing). Plus, I doubt Illitch would be able to negotiate to get the Pistons on that station, and with the Big Ten network coming soon, he wouldn't be getting any Big Ten sports either, the way PASS did. PASS had it all, Pistons, Tigers, Red Wings, Big Ten sports, and it couldn't survive.

Things are fine how they are now - IMO.

I read the Wikipedia article on PASS. It doesn't mention Fetzer, but Wikipedia is NOTORIOUS for inaccuracies. Monahagn may have bought PASS after it was launched, but I'm certain it was Fetzer's baby. That's how his son-in-law Larry Osterman got back into doing Tiger's broadcasts. He was the original play-by-play guy for PASS.

Do you all remember how you used to get a FILTER from Comcast in the 80's to get PASS, and the picture always sucked?

Illitch needs to make a network and somehow find a way to get pass the blackout rules and get Tigers games on nationally like the Cubs and Braves... I wish.

That's not allowed anymore.

I don't see any advantage to us to having Ilitch own the network, other than revenue for him.

Plus I think Comcast is getting into the sports network business. I think most of the White Sox games are put on their Comcast station.

Most Cubs and White Sox games are now on Comcast, with a few on WGN. I think most of the Bulls games are on Comcast as well as a number of away BlackHawks games. I don't think Fox Sports has much, if any of an inpact in the Chicago area anymore.

As for MI trying to do his own thing, its a lot less expensive in the long run to do what he is doing now. Have Fox pay him for the games, let them foot the production costs and sell the spots.

I'm not sure what the current deal is on the radio side, but once again its a lot less expensive the way they are doing it now than to 1) buy time and try to sell you own spots and manage your own network of affilates. 2) Try to obtain a station (see the Cardinals), and produce programing around the teams.

I wasn't in Detroit for the PASS days, however I do know Fetzer owned a number of radio stations around the state. (WKZO was one of them). He bought the stations to set up a radio network.
