If you haven't listened to an artist named Jason Isbell and his album "Southeastern" you ought to give it a full listen through. This is not an album for kids, it is not an album that deals with the happier side of life. This album is deep, dark, at times depressing as hell but always managing to be insightful. It is a tremendous piece of art and storytelling with real life characters, dealing with their own unique problems. With the passing of Robin Williams, a man who seemingly battled many of his own inner problems, I took a listen back through this album. The track here is titled Elephant. If you've got kids give it a listen when they're not around. Jason Isbell is one of the great storytellers of the modern era and this song is a clear reflection of his talent.

Hey, yer boy is headlining night 1 (January 30, 2015) of the Ann Arbor Folk Festivals. You'd have to sit around a bunch of liberals, but they usually stop being political for a few hours to enjoy the music.

I would like to make one positive comment and one rant. For the positive, the integration of Songza into Google Music All Access has been great! So far I have liked the playlists I have tried. Most have been at work, though I liked a nice jazz one I pulled up while cooking the other night. For the negative, I'm tired of the Led Zeppelin reissues. Unfortunately I convinced myself I needed the newest remastered versions with the extra disc, thinking sound quality would improve (which it has, but with HD tracks available now, the CDs are probably less impressive now) and there would be some interesting revelations on the second discs. There haven't been really. LZ1 has a decent second disc since it's live, but LZ2 doesn't do much for me, LZ4's is essentially an instrumental disc, and HotH is similar to LZ4. I was hoping for an electric version of "The Rain Song", but no. LZ3's second disc isn't as bad as the others, but I'm not so sure I will revisit it often.

See how it sings like a sad heart

And joyously screams out its pain

Sounds that build high like a mountain

Or notes that fall gently like rain

Ah yes, that was Professor Mustaine during his tenure at the University of MTV.

He's changed quite a bit since then.

I saw them on this tour. Loud, brash and energetic. I've been a fan ever since.

Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. Today is the day it went down in 1975.

I just learned to play it on guitar.

I'll probably take some grief for it, but screw it, I gained a new appreciation for some older video game pieces based in part on being performed by an orchestra and in part because they are good pieces of music in my opinion.

Yeah, I'm looking at going. That's my birthday and I think sitting through a fantastic concert would be a great way to spend it. I'm telling you, even if country or folk-country isn't your thing, you should get yourself a ticket and go. You should also tell your friends over at 107.1 to tell Lew Dickhea* to add his music into the rotation.

I always liked Castlevania's and FF's music. Probably because I have listened to them so damned much.

I read something recently about how the music for video games is intentionally enticing.

That said, I'm listening to pr0n at work

I just opened up Google Music and added playlists from Castlevania and FF. We'll see if they are conducive with thesis writing.

So far this morning I have listened to the following:

Metallica - Death Magnetic

Metallica - Kill 'Em All

Metallica - Master of Puppets

I think Live Binge and Purge followed by ....And Justice For All should make for a good afternoon.

I need to find my Metallica CD's and get them uploaded to my Google music account since they are not available. I don't do anything but stream music anymore.

Listed below are 10 of my favorite country artists, individual singer or group, with 10 great songs sang or written by them. I don't want to showcase just the hits that everyone may know, I want to dig deeper. I intend to post (in addition to favorite hits) deeper tracks that I think are important to who that person/s is as an artist, tracks that define careers.

#1: EmmyLou Harris

#2: George Strait

#3: Willie Nelson

#4: Merle Haggard

#5: John Denver

#6: Alan Jackson

#7: Keith Whitley

#8: Johnny Cash

#9: LeAnn Rimes

#10: (A)George Jones & (B)John Prine

Lost in the shuffle of great American songwriters like Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and others is John Prine. There aren't a lot of iconic hits or #1 singles from Prine's collection of music. But his ability to create characters, tell a great story and make you care deeply about it all throughout the song is nearly unrivaled in music. Prine is one of the most unappreciated song writers of the modern musical era in America.

Artist: #10B: John Prine

These aren't per-say my favorite 10 songs by George Jones but rather 10 captivating songs that define him as an artist. Frank Sinatra once said of Jones that he had the second best voice in all of music. Maybe, maybe not, but Jones had one heck of a voice and an even better ability to write great songs and sing them with incredible, raw emotion.
