One of the most surprising albums of the year is the new Luscious Jackson album called "Magic Hour". It's their first album in 14 years and it's probably the best in their career. Don't expect anything deep, it's just a fun record full of pop hooks that should not be taken too seriously.........it's exactly what they were going for and they nailed it.

I'm only a lukewarm fan of the band, but it's a really solid album.

The Eminem gets better every time I listen to it.

I think I'm getting old man musical tastes. I haven't even listented to any of it yet. I just haven't had the urge too, I've been listening to Jazz exclusively excpet for that one gd album.

Ever tried Jassmatazz by Guru? Best of both worlds.

Ahmad Jamal - Pittsburgh

Have I mentioned how great Google Music All Access is lately?

McCoy Tyner is obviously great, but its too many damn notes. I can't follow it. Sometimes it just feels like a blitzkrieg of note salad.

Oscar Peterson is that fast but it makes more sense.

Jamey Johnson's that lonesome song...seriously, he's my favorite current country artist. Great songwriter, has a killer sound.

I'm curious if any of you would post your favorite top 5 albums of 2013. I'm going to post my (pointless) favorites just because I want to generate talk, but I would also like to find out what people are listening to regularly.

As in, released in 2013, or the 5 albums I dug the most in 2013, regardless of release date?

Released in 2013, though I'd be interested in the other as well.

Here's my top 5 from 5 to 1:

Janelle Monae The Electric Lady

Arctic Monkeys AM

Kanye West Yeezus

Jason Isbell Southeastern

Haim Days Are Gone

These were the records I enjoyed the most, but I liked a lot of stuff that came out this year. Days Are Gone I haven't been able to put down.

to me, the single best thing released in 2013 was Yeezus. Nothing else really got close. I totally love that record. I loved Magna Carta too. That said, this year was not one where I followed new material. In fact, precisely the opposite. This year featured a very long, strange trip through the Grateful Dead Dicks Picks series followed by a still enduring piano fusion jazz phase.

Recordings that slaughtered me this year, in no particular order of preference, in addition to Yeezus:

Grateful Dead - Dicks Picks 10

Grateful Dead - Dicks Picks 4

Herbie Hancock - Headhunters

Ahmad Jamal - The Essence, Pt 1

There's really a broader context to this. I've played guitar for many years now, and I began to study Jerry Garcia. I really loved what he could do with command and subtlty (sp?) simultaneuosly. However, what happened was I started really keying into the keyboards in the grateful dead (pun intended). My band quit, and I couldn't play guitar anymore for psychological reasons. So I switched to Piano.

I think Yeezus might be an all-timer. But I'm a total Kanye slap. Dude could mic a toilet and I'd think it was great.

I understand. That's too bad about your band, but it's cool you're taking up the piano. I've been yearning to play piano again, but unfortunately I don't have one to play. Heck, I'd just love to play guitar again. It's been too long.

Speaking of stuff not released this year (technically), DGC released a deluxe edition of In Utero, and I found myself enjoying that record more now than I did then.
