Back in the 80’s,  he lived in a big house right in the middle of the neighborhood in Bloomfield Township.    No gates or long hidden drive.   I thought that was cool that he was just another house in a nice neighborhood. He’s since moved to one of the biggest houses on Upper Straights Lake.   An absolute monster that probably is more fitting of Bob Seger.

Man, all this talk of concerts has me absolutely craving the moment when we get the all clear for crowded concerts and sporting events again. I'm sick of this crappy Covid. We all have so much pent-up energy for a Roaring 20s.

****, I even want adolescents who have been absolutely hammered by these shutdowns to be screaming their lungs out together again.

Here in Long Beach, there's a bar/restaurant that has a huge parking lot. They set up a bunch of tables, distanced, and a stage. This last weekend was their first weekend doing this and they had a really good Journey tribute band. Was so nice to get out and see some live music again!

it wasn't until I listened to the sopranos podcast that I learned the guitarist from Journey was in Santana for a long time.

Been getting into Santana the last 6 months or so.

And he was a teenager at the time. In fact Journey spawned from that version of Santana.

and it wasn't long ago, a few years probably, that I learned that Carlos didn't sing the songs.... and until I watched that show on Netflix that Ted Nugent didn't sing strangelhold or cat scratch fever.... (I think that was right)

He sings Cat Scratch Fever but Derek St. Holmes sang a lot of the lead vocals. Fun fact: Derek later teamed up with Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford and released a good rock/pop eponymous album.

This may be known too: Nugent later teamed up with Tommy Shaw (Styx) and Jack Blades (Night Ranger) to form The Damn Yankees.

Fun interview with Elliott Easton of The Cars. Such a humble guy and is seriously under appreciated for his playing.

Carlos does NOT like to sing! I've seen him live and am not sure if he even added in on any back-up vocals.

What's funny to me is that the same guy (whose name I don't remember) did the vocals on a lot of Santana's stuff and as much as I enjoy Santana it's hard to argue he has a very good voice either - especially for someone picked to be the vocalist.

I have had a version of the same dream about 3-4 times during all this.  I normally do not recall dreams, but this one I am walking around people without a mask on thinking I SHOULD be wearing a mask, but also knowing it must be over.

Very known. I was a big fan. Shaw and Blades sounded great together.

If you need some beautiful ambient music to fill in the background while you perform other tasks, this checks all the boxes.

yeah the Damn Yankees were fun.  Totally in my wheelhouse being of high school age at the time....  had just gotten my first car at... can totally picture riding around Dearborn and the Heights with my sunroof open listening to that....good times.  Good girls.  Not always.

For a long time I thought Santana's song "Winning" was Journey.

Following that up with Into the Great White Open is great too....

Those two were very prevalent in my HS and first year of college.... One of those things where I can remember precise details of where I was at the time and sounds and smells come flooding back.

Thanks for inspiring... I'm listening now.

I never noticed this before, or I forgot, but at the end of Runnin' Down a Dream Petty has a voiceover where he announces to the CD listeners that this is the point where cassette users have to flip it over.

I'm a notorious "this song's almost over, skip to the next one" so I might have never heard it.  I had both cassette and CD later on.

First CD I ever bought was the Led Zeppelin Box Set.  Dearborn Music.  Used some of my graduation money on a sweet pull out CD player for my car and that box set.

"he met a girl out there with a tattoo too" is one of my favorite lines ever.  He can get away with that.  If it were someone else I'd say it was lazy.

yep that one is really great too.   That part for the CD listeners is pretty dang hilarious.   I had forgotten about it too.

I think it's safe to say Tom Petty is actually underrated even though he's clearly a legend.

I've been on a Dolly Parton kick lately given all the work she's done to promote the vaccine and the responsibility of all of us to get vaccinated against Covid.

The label hated the album and almost wouldn't let him release it and it's one of the reasons he left MCA for Warner Brothers after Great Wide Open.      I can't understand why.  That album is LOADED with instantly singalong radio-ready hooks.    First time I heard Free Falling I was singing along to it like Jerry Maguire.   Even some of the non-radio singles like Yer So Bad and A Face In The Crowd are instantly recongnizable (I work at two stations that now play Yer So Bad regularly).  It's my favorite album from 1989 (sorry, Stone Roses).

Sometimes labels get in their own way

When I worked at WHMI it was one of my first paid radio on-air gigs and they didn't have music set out on a schedule.........they had it on an index card system - pull the card, play the song, write down what time it aired..........next card is the next gold (older song) you played).

They still ran Paul Harvey at the top of the hour and it was a weekend morning show and Paul Harvey was telling a story about how he went skydiving for the first time and he mentioned being in free fall.......while Paul was playing I was scrambling to find Free Falling (every song was on an 8-track-like 'cart' and they were not alphabetical..........I found it seconds before Paul Harvey ended and after he said "and now you know the rest of the story", I played the WHMI jingle and right into Free Falling.

Hotline rings (flashes) and it's the station owner, Greg,  and he asks "Was 'Free Falling" the next song in the card deck?  and I said No, it wasn't, but I couldn't pass that up and he said, well, you should stick to the order of the cards but that what I did was absolutely perfect and sometimes improvising is allowed if you are on the ball.........well done.
