Okay,  I watch the crime channel (Discovery ID) quite a bit.   I guess I am a disturbed person or something, but, I digress..........

They run a promo for some show called My Big Fat Fabulous Life and in the clips of the show the girl who is the star (its a "reality" show) is always depressed, wiping tears away, talking about how awful she's been treated.....or how her heart has been broken....or she's just lost in life (join the club, lady)................but a couple of things strike me.................It doesn't sound like anything Fabulous is going on here and WHY WOULD I WANT TO WATCH SOMEONE GET TREATED LIKE THAT?    WHY WOULD I WANT TO WATCH THAT?     I listen to whiny Emo music anyway, but still, I don't know who would want to watch this.

Do you know anyone who watches this show?    Tell me why,  I really want to know

(and to let you know, I am fat myself, and I know from experience that people treat you like crap for that very fact alone, I just don't know why anyone would want to display that to the rest of the world).

I bought some stuff for my dog at Petco.     I signed up for their rewards program

Since then I get 5 or 6 emails from Petco every single day.   So much that I won't shop there anymore,  I'll just go to Meijer.    Someone needs to explain the concept of overdoing it to their marketing team.    Same thing with Malwarebytes.  It used to be good but then the non stop pop up windows to upgrade...........every hour................Goodbye Malwarebytes.    Someone had to have purchased them or they changed management.

Maybe I am just old guy here and don't get it.  Maybe young people like being reminded of something several times a day because, I don't know, they are getting attention or something.

The unsubscribe button on the bottom of emails is a blessing.  It usually takes a few weeks for some stupid reason, but it is so worth it.  When I get a notification of an email these days...I know it is something semi important or something I actually want to know about.  It takes a LONG time to groom your email, the unsubscribe button is the start.

There is a fine line with each person about it.  How much is too much verse not enough to actually make you want to use whatever promotion it is?  For me, shoot me an email once a week or so for some things and others I would not mind one a day.

You can even tailor how many you get on most sites after you hit the unsubscribe button that takes you to the site...you can scale it down to once a week or a month or something.  That also helps.

Yes, I can hit unsubscribe, I understand this, but they should know better than to beat down potential customers.   I don't know, maybe it works, but to me it's like the ridiculousness of getting a 4 foot long receipt from CVS when I buy one item.   It's just annoying, but I guess we live in a world now where you aren't making a real impact unless you are annoying people.   Heard a radio consultant say that if your listeners aren't sick of every single song you play then you are not doing it right.   Hmmm, seems to me that music-oriented public radio stations that don't overplay music are doing quite well around the country these days (now that their ratings are included in reports).  Maybe they figure most of their potential customers are so stupid that you have to beat them over the head constantly to remind them.

Because they are thin(er).

One reason people watch shows like that is for validation that they are OK by whatever metric the people in the show are not.  A show like COPS (another example of video with pretty limited entertainment value taken as video production alone) has pretty much the same psychological appeal from a different angle. They are only a step or so from being a modern version of the carnival midway.

Just making sure you knew.  Some people like that stuff.  My wife loves those long receipts because they are usually filled with coupons.  I hate shopping so do not care.  As far as radio stations....it's funny you said that because I have worked retail in my past and used to hear the same crap every day and even emailed the stations about it.  I just stopped listening..which sucks because I love music, but sick of the same thing...even with Pandora they play the same things over and over.  I stopped listening to that also for the most part.  I have created dozens of "stations" on Pandora and still end up hearing the same things.

This also.  It is multi faceted like most things in life, but I do think your example probably demonstrates a higher percentage of the watchers than mine.

You have to seek out new music now.   Its one of my jobs so I do it all the time, but if it wasn't something I was paid for, I wouldn't have the time.

Yeah - I'm suffering this. I don't care for pop or country and there are no radio outlets for anything beside that and old rock and roll. I mostly miss the disappearance of commercial jazz/fusion/instrumental radio. So I've just gone back to mostly adding to my classical library where I already kind of know what's out there that I haven't heard yet but will like. Today I don't know where I come across a new artist I like the way I happened across a Pat Metheny in the 80's. I find play lists from the streaming services mostly vapid. That may be unfair, but as you say, who has the time to give them all a fair hearing? It's like television programming - there is just too much to wade through.

Sounds like there is a market for a "b sides" type radio station out there.  MCS is in the biz, create a bunch of true "not heard before" type playlists and call it WZBH or something.  It would fail miserably unless you had enough capital to keep it going until it caught on.

Crazy enough I find new stuff on the xfinity music stations quite often, but listen to those long enough and you still hear repeats like crazy.

Digital radio....play ALL kinds of random songs, good ones for the appropriate genre based on time of day and day of the week (this should not be a problem figuring out at all) and have a button on the display you can push to save for later or to buy instantly from the radio....is that basically Sirius?  Make it free though...over air no sub based.  Almost NEVER play the same song twice.

Algorithms are great but at the end of the day you need someone with tastes like you to push it to you.  I like Sirius but they seem to be moving towards artist stations which is dumb because chances are I have all of that already.  You can’t know everything.  You need a guy that says “if you dig this then check out these guys out of Charlotte”.  And with social media now a band can do alright with 200K fans. When they come through you can see them for $15

Absolutely.  You still need a DJ to push it out.  The playlist would still be played by a DJ.  Depending on the time of day or day of the week (whichever your research shows is best for each genre or the genres you decide to focus on) you still have a DJ to do this kind of thing.  Free radio is still a thing and should ALWAYS be a thing.  The market has been saturated with streaming services that you have to pay for...and while that is awesome for some people...some people just want to turn the dial to their station and listen without having to worry about if they paid the monthly sub fee for the music yet this month.  I would assume this is people in our age demographic for the most part so a lot of the new pop music you would not even need to consider because kids these days have no issue paying for apply radio or spotify or pandora etc.

I honestly think there is a market for it, but have no idea how the business side of radio works.  How do you even get a designation on the band?  Where do you broadcast from?  Are there already old stations already sitting there just waiting for a person to sign a lease on a building with antennae's etc?

Like I said an idea like this would fail miserably UNLESS you had enough capital to lose money for the first 2-3 years for it to really catch on.  That is what I feel like a lot of people do not understand about business, most people know it is risky, but I would bet the majority think all business owners make money right away.  You take a huge risk dumping all that money into something hoping it will pay off.  If you believe in the idea you put the money in and keep plugging along.  If you happen to "make it" then good on you.

MCS can jump in but you need to pay or obtain a license to get the frequency.  Radio changed massively in the 90's when they allowed consolidation.  Now every city is the same.  In many cases it's one DJ doing things for multiple cities.  Radio stations now exist just to make money and they don't care who they have to play to do it.  It's not about music promotion.  There's so much great music out there that's never played on the radio.  Last year in the summer my phone battery was dead so I had to haul out my boom box from the garage, wipe off the cobwebs, and put on FM Radio.  It was the same old **** from 15 years ago.  I don't listen to the radio anymore except for Tiger games.  We don't even have one in the garage, my boom box was in a box in the garage.  The music award shows and the radio industry is one giant circle jerk of bad music.

Although it was nice to see Grace Potter nominated for two Rock category awards.  Do they play her stuff on the radio?

Does anything good at all come from college "greek" culture? Hazing deaths, sexual predation, corona outbreaks, and now ......

...drug rings.

Comradery, it is a very underrated portion of social interaction in todays world IMO.  You want/NEED people you can do pretty much anything in front of without them judging you...now they need to work on what to do when that buddy shares his dangerous secrets and how to help mold that person to make them better instead of flaming the fire that makes them destructive.
