2006 AMATEUR DRAFT DIARY

Recommended Posts

I thought I read that Andrew Miller only had two pitches and may end up in the bullpen. Which would indicate that Kershaw's upside is higher?

I've read that Miller has a plus fastball and two average-to-plus breaking balls.

I agree. I also feel the draft should be slotted, and finances controlled. Let the players earn their big pay days.

I don't think it would do much to change... Sure there would be more cost certainty but a lot of times use money as an excuse to pass for a player they like more.

Also sometimes players would still drop because once they got past the first 3 picks maybe they wouldn't sign for the money available. Then you would have a lot of teams not being able to sign their first round picks because of the cap.

I think the system is just fine, although I would like to see teams able to trade their picks.

1. Kershaw

2. Wes Hodges, 3b, GT

3. Drew Rundle, OF Ore HS

4. Jeremy Barfield, OF TX HS

5. Jason Hagerty, C MO HS

With his bloodlines and size, Barfield piques my interest as well.

Based on quotes by David Chadd today in the News and FreeP, I suspect that the speculation surrounding Kershaw by Baseball America may be a little premature. Chadd said that he's never seen a draft this unsettled so late in the process, which is really saying something after last year. I still think we grab one of Hochevar/Miller/Stubbs.

At least, that's what I'm telling myself...

With no basis on this at all, here's a guess...

Miller - if he drops, and it sounds like he will, DD will make this pick

Buck - i'd take a risk on the velocity

Pham - i liked this pick by e

Jon Jay - great name

Jeff Dunbar - seems like an interesting gamble

4FB, 2FB, Slider. In college used 2FB almost to neglect of other pitches, because it has enough movement that he didn't need to throw his 4-seamer or slider. I've never seen a mention of any off-speed stuff whatsoever, which is scary for a pitcher of that age with that sort of bonus demand.

I wasn't quite accurate...my understanding is that he features a different break on his slider to righties and lefties. Not exactly two separate pitches, but different nevertheless.

Hey - what can I say...Not only a great porn name, but the ratstache puts him over the top. I'm sure DD would see it that way as well.

Anyone know if there's any strictly audio coverage? I can get away with audio but not video at work.

Here is some info from the John Sickels blog (minorleagueball.com):

I have had a reliable source just tell me that there will be "lots" of surprises in the first round, and that most of the pre-draft predictions will prove to be incorrect. Should be fun!

I'm not going to begrudge any player for asking for the moon, least of all a pitcher. I mean with all the talk of TINSTAAPPs around here, I'd think you'd understand that nothing is guarenteed and this could be his only shot at a big contract - it's time to look out for #1 sorta deal.

Problem is that Hochevar is back atop the draft boards again, and wasn't hurt by the yearlong layoff in the eyes of the scouting directors and GM's - it gives Miller a lot more leverage in negotiatons. If he isn't head and shoulders above anybody else on the board when you pick, you should probably go with the signability pick.

it puzzles me how draft picks can hold out for so much money when they haven't even stepped on a professional baseball field yet. Unproven but is paid on potential. It would be interesting to see the percentages of how many draft guys that get huge bonuses end up to amount to nothing when they start playing pro ball.

Micro, while things are still relatively slow, has MWG received some guidance on the above issue? Has he been warned by MLB or some other publication? I do a fair share of web-posting, blogging, etc., and I'm always curious as to what the accepted guidelines are.
The guidelines were put in place to prevent any possible issues with sport leagues or media publications.

The reposting of premium content (which requires a paid subscription to access) on a public website/message forum is not allowed (read the terms of agreement from content providers), but I see this being abused on many sites and forums. It should be basic common sense, but people still do it. It has been done on this forum on occasion in the past and it is a problem that I felt needed to be addressed now, instead of later.

Articles that are found on free sites should be given proper credit, simple as that.

Here are the guidelines for posting information from other media sources: http://www.motownsports.com/forums/faq.php?faq=vb_read_and_post#faq_posting_articles

TM79 guessed Jeff Larish a year before we actually drafted him. I'd like to hear his predictions again. :)

In the 10th round area, I'd expect the Tigers to maybe re-draft Paul Coleman, if he allows them to.
