Sleeper

Brody Croyle may end up being the best quarterback in this draft. The kid just seems to have "it". He might not be the most physicaly intimidating guy, but he did win the Long toss in the skills competition. Threw 68 yds. into the wind. Had a great senior bowl and also a great workout. They say he's like Elvis in Alabama. Any thoughts? I'm sure Cruzer will some insight.

I don't like Croyle at all.

Injuries, and he throws a lot of interceptions...he didn't make it a full season until last year - don't be fooled by one good year (of which I'd like to add the Alabama offense as a whole was terrible).

If you want a sleeper QB, look no further than Omar Jacobs in the 4th/5th round, Bruce Gradkowski in the 6th, or Tarvaris Jackson in the who-knows-when.

I don't like Jacobs at all, Froggy. Or Gradkowski.

Croyle has some abilities, but I'm not buying into him.

My guy has always been Kellen Clemens of Oregon, but the truth is coming out on him, and it looks like he's going in the 2nd round, so he's not really a sleeper any more. Darrell Hackney is someone who reminds me of the Jaguar QB's; who's as strong as an oxe, and can develop down the road. Don't see it any time soon, though.

Sleeper=Eric Winston for the Texans.

They passed up Bush because they said they needed a pass rush to beat their divisional opponents. They also needed an OL (you listening Millen??) and saw that a premier tackle was free in the 3rd round!!! Good job by the Texans; they may have effed up on the Bush snub, but they got it right getting a good tackle.

If he's a premier tackle, he surely didn't play like it. He wasn't available, although I would have loved the Lions to have gotten him. They didn't have a fourth rounder, so it was tough sledding for the Lions to move up. They need to keep their picks in future years for such an emergency.

I don't know how good Croyle will become, but I will route for him. Did you see the special about him and his family they showed during the draft? His family runs a place for abused children. The place they run gives them a chance in life.

I think John Scott could be a sleeper, if he can get his strength up, he definately had 2nd round potential.

The Lions were attempting to trade Harrington to the Browns for a fourth rounder to aquire him, according to Millen.

Sounds like Matua could be the utlimate sleeper/steal pick in this draft. Here's for hoping.

Matua has played Center before... and I think he's a guy that could be groomed to take over Raiola's spot. He seems to be talented enough... will just have to wait for the development though...

I like it that he's got some size to him. Not for the Guard position, but for Center. If he can steal Raiola's position, I'll agree with your statement above 100%...

Linemen tend to go all directions, but many linemen are from low rounds, even UDFAs. So I think we have potential for a few to become starters.

Give me a break. The Lions love Raiola.

I won't argue you on this one.

I personally think he's average at the very best, but you are 100% correct. The Lions do love Raiola

not to get too rah rah, but you do have a much better line coach now in bechtol...maybe he can get something out of these guys that wasn't developed before...he was able to turn wahle, rivera, and flannigan into better than average...he even got a few years more out of frankie winters, lol...here's hoping he can do the same here...

He and Martz both like pulling/trapping lines, a big reason why they're so high on Raiola; who's terrific out in space. Raiola moves as well as any center in the league. They'll try Scott at left guard, that's a priority position; but he might not be a fit there. How the line shakes out is to me the most interesting part of camp, but there are only two positions open. Backus is set at LT, Raiola at C, and Woody at RG.

Backus has to sign his tender before he is set at LT

Backus was franchised. He will be the LT at least this year.

I'm sure he will be, but he still has to sign, just because he was designated dosent mean they automatically get him to be on the team. A franchise tender was offered meaning the lions offered him an average of the top 5 tackles in the leauge, and if someone else signs him, they owe the lions a 1st round pick. but i am sure he will sign the 1 year deal, you are right this will be his last year here, because he is not worth $6 million a year

And I agree with this 100%.

I didn't mean that Matua would just waltz in and take Raiola's job away from him.

I'm calling Matua a steal if he develops over the next 2-3 years... and eventually becomes good enough to take over for Dominic...

In no way, shape, or form do I believe that happens within the next year or two. But... down the road...?

If he doesn't sign the tender, I believe the Lions can automatically renew him at the tender. They have his rights for the next year. He'll be an unrestricted FA next year, whether he signs or not... unless the Lions can sign him to a more than 1 year contract...

I believe I got that right...

This is correct. He is contractually obligated to the Lions for whatever the avg. of the top 5 Tackles in the NFL is whether he signs anything or not. If a team wants him bad enough, they can sign him to a contract but would have to forfeit TWO first round picks. We all know no team will sacrifice two first rounders for Backus. Therefore, Backus will be lining up at LT this season for the Lions.
