Rumored Milicic deal

Recommended Posts

just heard about 30 days ago the Magic offered Cato for Milicic and Arroyo. Pistons declined but with the Pistons visiting Orlando this past weekend the Magic once again showed interest in Milicic and Arroyo but this time offering Cato and a 1st round pick. Pistons apparently didn't say yes, but they didn't say no.

I for one would probably do this deal, Cato brings some size but the possibility of a lottery pick is too good to pass up.

Something must be up. A friend of my dad's who was hired to do electrician work in Darko's house was abruptly told to stop. He was having some other work done on his house and every thing was put on hold. Everything was paid for up front so that seems like a sign to me that Darko might think he's heading somewhere.

It doesn't make sense. Why would Orlando want a 4th PG? Why would we want Cato? Is the 1st round pick in next year's draft? That could be intriguing to add a potential lottery pick to the mix, but (1) he'd never play under Flip, and (2) Orlando's still in the playoff chase.

Why would this indicate a trade? Seriously, why?

Oh, I'm not sure it indicates anything, It's just not something that happens often, Paying up front to have your house remodeled and than haulting everything in the middle. That was just the first thought that popped in my head that maybe something is on the horizon, that's all.

My third cousin is the yearbook editor at Darko's old high school, and apparently their journalism class was putting together a collage of photos of Darko playing on the school team and for the Pistons, but then they mysteriously stopped working on the project.

He's obviously being traded.

I just tried ordering a Milicic jersey off of the NBA site, and it kept coming up as an Orlando black & blue jersey. Hmmm........

I would go for it. Cato has an expiring contract, and if they throw in an unprotected 1st round pick Orlando has the 8th worst record right now. Grab JJ with the lottery pick, and we will have a solid bench.

If you make the trade, it's strictly for cap relief and the 1st rounder. That makes it tempting. But...do you want to depend on Hunter as the only backup to Billups? That's why I don't make the trade if Arroyo is involved.

Say what you will about Arroyo's inconsistent play, but he's the best they have and the only legit option as Billups' backup. You better have another decent PG in your hip pocket if you unload him, as I seriously doubt you can depend on Hunter as your full time #3 guard. At this point of his career, Hunter is a defensive specialist, you don't want him running the offense for extended periods.

Why would the Pistons need another two guard? Delfino is a more then adequate backup to Hamilton. Not only that, I don't think Orlando will finish in the position in the draft to take Reddick. Orlando shouldn't be looking at Darko, they are fine in the big men category, they need a younger three, Grant Hill is getting old, and has battled injuries for a long time.

If Orlando stays in the lottery they will be in the range for JJ. His isn't exactly the best NBA prospect. He will be available in the 5-10 area. And a frontline of Dwight Howard and Darko Milicic sounds sweet for the next 10 years. They will probably get a decent haul from a potential Steve Francis deal to improve other parts of their team.

Who's going to backup chauncy if you deal arroyo? And do we really need another big man sitting on the bench with Dale Davis? Is that what we need to give us a spark? I don't think so. Any trade needs to involve a scorer that can help the team this year.

Not to mention, Cato has been injured for the past month.

Why is it I hate Darko more then the average person around here, but I never want to trade him. Especially for a dumb deal like this.

Even losing his deal and letting Cato walk next year, they get little to no cap relief. Darko makes under $5 million a year and even subtracting that, the Pistons are going to be over the cap. You don't clear cap space to get closer to being under the cap, you clear it to get 10-15 million under it so you can make a run at a free agent in the summer.

Maybe if you could gurantee me that the pick would be top 5 I would do it, but you cant do that. You cant even gurantee it will be a lottery pick at this point. Ugly ugly deal, and if there is any truth to it, and I doubt there is, then the Pistons really have given up on Darko

Tempting, but I'm not sure. The 1st round pick is a sweetener. We can probably get a better deal for a package of Darko/Arroyo.

The deal I would do is Darko, Arroyo for Cato, The rights to Fran Vazquez and a future #1. This way, you get a #1 in a few years and since the age limit is 20 by then, the talent will be deeper than it is this draft. Also, you get a project in Vazquez, who can have Memo potential and you can let him stay overseas for a few season since you don't need him right now. The only thing that would scare me is if Chauncey or Lindsey gets injured, then we are in trouble.

Tigerdon,

Can you give me the scoop on Vazquez? I don't know a thing about him. I assume since you said he has Memo potential, he is a big man buy any info on him would be appreciated.

This is Chad Ford's description on him from last draft

6-11 230 PF/C

Chad Ford's Analysis: This is the second big surprise of the night. He's long and bouncy, he works hard and he has a lot of experience overseas. He's low risk, but he doesn't have enormous upside. It will be interesting to see how the Magic use him with Dwight Howard. Both guys will be active, athletic and all over the boards. But where is the offense going to come from? One more question for Vazquez. Will he come to the NBA next season or is headed back to Spain?

Draft Projection: No. 8 to 15

Similarities: Andris Biedrins with more offense and experience

Notes: This year's Euro sleeper looks like it will be Vazquez. The 6-foot-10, 230 pound forward is averaging 11.3 ppg and 5.8 rpg in 20 mpg for Malaga this season. He's had a number of dominating games in Euroleague play, including a 17-point, 11-rebound effort versus Euroleague powerhouse CSKA Moscow and an impressive 19-point, seven-rebound effort against the German Opel Skyliners. Had a career high 26 points and 11 rebounds versus Jovenut in early April. Just about everyone in the league has been over to Europe to watch him play, including Larry Bird and Jerry West.

Positives: He's an athletic, bouncy big man with great hands. Vazquez has excellent moves around the basket, a knack for crashing the offensive boards and a nice 15-foot jump shot. He is an excellent rebounder and a good shot blocker. His aggressivness and quickness leads to a lot of dunks.

Negatives: Strength and experience are both issues. He's going to have to bulk up to play the 4 in the pros. He's deceptively strong, but still needs to get stronger. Right now he still relies on his physical gifts more than basketball skills, but scouts say he's improving.

Summary: Long, athletic Spaniard is a rarity ? an international big man who actually plays and produces. He's ready to step in and help right away, if a team can convince him to leave Europe this summer.

I'm sure they would consider it because your getting a big man with upside who you can keep overseas for a few seasons and a future #1. Looking at everones roster, I think this would be the most appealing trade. Lets face it, getting someone that can play now makes no sense considering they won't play much, plus knowing Joe D, he likes to make his team better now, but more importantly, he wants they better for years to come as well.

Vasquez and Milcic are the same player. Why would the Magic trade Vasquez AND another number one just to get Milcic and Arroyo? Arroyo is nothing but an overpaid back up point guard and the Magic already have back-up point guards.

I bet if there is any truth to this rumor, it was Cato and a lottery protected No. 1 for Darko.

trading away the backup PG, even though it is Arroyo, scares me. However, if they could survive and draft JJ, that sounds promising... even though he's from d00k.

I'll start by saying i would do this deal. But, the pick must be only be like top 3 protected. It would have to be a lottery pick. Cato has a great deal that will help us resign Ben and later Billups to the big deals they deserve with out going way into the luxary tax.

Secondly, why would anyone want to draft reddick so high. He would not fit into our system he is undersized he cant defend and he cant play pg. He is not a good fit for our team at all and only fills one need( outside shooting ). For a different team he may be more attractive but for ours he would be nothing more than Jon Barry. If i had a top ten pick i wouold go for Rondo. He could come and and backup pg and some sg right away. His d would be great off the bench with those long long arms and big hands. He could be like a younger athletic hunter on d and be a great fit for our team.

I just wish there was somehow a way to get Nelson but i am sure they would never give him up.
