Lino, we hardly knew ye

by IdahoBert

Chris Shelton was not the only Rule Five selection on the Detroit Tigers roster in 2004. Pitcher Lino Urdaneta was craftily robbed from the Indians, and although he was sidelined nearly the entire season with arm trouble, he joined the team for the first game of a double header against the Royals on September 9th.

You may argue that an 11.57 ERA at Lakeland and a 9.69 ERA at Toledo did not warrant such a promotion, but you could also argue “sample size” I suppose. Lino, however, was determined reach even greater heights—he achieved infinity. His inauspicious Major League debut came in relief of Jason Johnson and he failed to retire any of the six batters he faced and all six of them scored. The Tigers lost 26-5.

You might say this was not a fair test of Lino’s abilities since no one else could keep the mighty Royals from scoring that day. You might say that sending him into that game was like dropping an untested smoke jumper into the Yellowstone Fire of 1988 with a teaspoon and a bottle of Dasani. But he was outrighted to Toledo the next day anyway. Few tears were shed as I recall. I think he was tiger337's avatar for a while.

Here's the damage:

Lino Urdaneta enters the game for the Tigers with bases loaded and one out.

- David DeJesus walked scoring Dee Brown with one out. Bases loaded and Angel Berroa due up.

- Angel Berroa singled to center scoring Alberto Castillo with one out. Bases loaded and Abraham Nunez due up.

- Abraham Nunez singled to right scoring Ruben Gotay and David DeJesus with one out. Runners on first and third and Matt Stairs due up.

- Matt Stairs singled to left scoring Angel Berroa with one out. Runners on first and second and Joe Randa due up.

- Joe Randa infield single to short. Bases loaded with one out and Calvin Pickering due up.

- Calvin Pickering singled to right scoring Abraham Nunez with one out. Bases loaded and Dee Brown due up.

- Franklyn German enters the game for the Tigers with bases loaded and one out.

Here's a list of other players with an infinite ERA.

Lino Shuffle

Lino missed the plate

That day he left the shack

But that wasn't all he missed

He ain't comin' back

At a pitchers mound

In an auto town he made a stop

Just long enough

To give up six runs off the top

Next stop Tol' town

Lino put the money down

Let her roll

He say, "one more job oughta get it

One last shot 'fore we quit it"

One for the road

Lino, whoa-oh-oh-oh....

He's for the money, he's for the show

Lino's a-waitin' for another go

Lino, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh....

He said, "one more job oughta get it"

"One last shot, we quit it"

"One more for the road"

Lino be runnin',

Havin' great big fun 'til he got the note

Sayin' "toe the line or blow it"

And that was all Dombrowski wrote

He be makin' like a beeline,

Headin' for the borderline, goin' for broke

Sayin, "one more hit oughta do it"

"This joint, ain't nothin' to it"

"One more for the road"

Lino, whoa-oh-oh-oh....

He's for the money, he's for the show

Lino's a-waitin' for another go

Lino, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh....

"one more job oughta get it"

"One last shot, and we quit it"

"One more for the road"

Hmmm...this thread already has 70 hits in less than 12 hours--and most people were asleep for most of it--while some of the Cobb threads had fewer than 70 over a few days...

And you're welcome keglerv. I'm glad you enjoy them! :classic:

And he shall be Lino

And he shall be in the bull-pen

And he shall be Lino

In tradition with our Rule 5 plan

And he shall be Lino

And he shall be in the bull-pen

He shall be Lino

Excellent changeup IBert! Does this mean we could expect a Bieker Graterol feature someday? Perhaps we could convince ESPN Classis to run the game and we could have a game thread before the regular season so that we could get a little practice in.

The irony of this is that there has never been another historical thread I've done with this many hits. And for Lino? Go figure...

I will profile the the great and the small as along as I can find a picture and enough copy to make to worthwhile. After two or three hundred of these threads we will all know so much about this team it will be sort of scary, actually. :ogre:

Do note that Jeffries played in that game. Of course we had no chance whatsoever.

You know, you can talk all you want about Robbie Robertson and Rick Danko but without Lino on the drums with that rockabilly twangy voice, The Band would have been nuthin'. S.F.A.
