Metro Detroit (and area) Casinos

Recommended Posts

Hey all .. I was just wondering what everybody's favorite Metro Detroit-Area casino is? Casino Windsor has anounced a huge expansion doubling its amount of hotel rooms... I think it will be cool.

I tend to go to Greektown when I go, which is about once every six months. Last time I went, I didn't even gamble a nickel, just watched some cheesy lounge act while drinking cheap beer. Kind of a fun in a campy sort of way.

Whichever one has a five dollar craps table will be my favorite at any given moment.

More significantly, if CW is doubling its rooms, that's business that the Detroit casinos are losing because they don't have the hotels or permanent casinos. Thanks, City Council. Thanks for nothin'.

Its not the city council's fault at all. Blame the Lac View Desert Band of chippewas. Their lawsuit is the thing holding everything up. Until they get a settlement or a ruling, everything is on hold.

In addition to doubling its hotel rooms, CW is adding a 5,000 seat entertainment venue, 100,000 sq. ft. of convention space, and doing a 'makeover' of the existing facility to add more bars, retaurants, retail, etc .... As far as I know there is no expansion of the gaming facilities themselves ...

I personally think they should make the poker room bigger. There is always a big waiting list to get in and there is no need for that.

This is a version of the story I've never heard. Please explain, if you will.

I've called Detroit's casinos the "permanent temporary Casinos" since the beginning.

Well, I liked Greektown when I went a couple of years ago. Casino Windsor wins, though. Better gambling experience, overall.

Sure...

I'll start by saying this...you can blame the council for a lot. A WHOLE lot...but the lack of casino expansion is not their fault.

My memory is a tad fuzzy on a couple of the details...I'm doing this by memory, so I'll do more research tomorrow.

Basically, this really small tribe from the Western UP...the "Lac View Desert Band of Chippewa" (all couple hundred of them) sued the city of Detroit, saying the bidding process was rigged against them, because two companies were granted preferences in the original bill (greektown and MGM, I think...) the third was the only license that was "up for grabs." They claimed that this did not allow them to fairly compete for a license. Put aside for a moment that they didn't even apply...now they have partnered with (drumroll please) Don Barden and say they can NOW submit a competetive proposal. A judge disagreed, so they appealed to the appeals court. They also disagreed, so the case now sits in legal limbo. Now the problem is, the original judge said that until the lawsuit is settled, any construction on new casinos for the existing casino companies is on hold. SO, until either a settlement is reached, or the Supreme court rules, no construction is allowed.

Correct me on this if I'm wrong, Shabba...but I don't think the tribe has "officially" brought their appeal to the high court yet, and the judges order barring construction still stands...so the tribe has the casinos in a bind. They can't build until they settle.

My understanding is that the tribe had a deal for 40 million two years ago...but backed out. They now want 120 million bucks from the three operators.

Its doubtful they could win the case...but they have leverage with the judges order, making a settlement a possibility, someday.

So...that's the gist. A couple of minor details might be mixed up, but that's where we stand right now. A 300 member tribe in the UP holding up economic development in Detroit, when it was completely unrealistic for them to even make a proposal in the first place. Only after the fact did they argue they were left out.

Maybe you have been there (I haven't), but I thought Casino Windsor did not have a poker room until like February 15th or something. Asking them to expand it already would be asking a bit much. I also heard that the dealers were very inexperienced and things were not run well at all. I was ready to make a trip down there to check it out until I heard such bad reviews of it. I'm sure they'd want to get what they have running smoothly before they expand it.
