The new question is this

Recommended Posts

Since in my opinion they did not get the running back they wanted the most (Deshaun Foster) I ask this.

Do they Keep James Stewart now? At least for another season? It's not like stewart is a bad back. He can run and can do it good. And he is a big enough back to take a little pressure off of Joey and or McMahon whom ever starts this year.

Yeah, but whats Detroit going to do if he doesn't?Doesn't look at this point like we have much leverage to force him to take a cut, since we all know he is our only real running threat and there isn't any free agents better that I'm aware of.Marty can't afford to go into next year with a rookie QB,or virtually one in Mac,with no running game to help take the pressure off.Stewart is safe as far as I can see and unless he volunteers to take a hit for the team, which would seem unlikely with all the talk of cutting him earlier,he will be paid what his contract calls for.

The Lions didn't want DeShaun at all. They were trying to trade up into the late 2d round, but didn't have the ammo to pull it off. They were trying to get Clinton Portis. I think they were able to get the next guy on their board when they drafted Staley. Don't forget about Avion Cason. He flashed some real speed during his short stay last year.

I think they are also looking to June 1st when other teams cut players to get under the cap. I don't know if any quality running backs are on that particular bubble, but I wouldn't be surprised if they added a back that way.

They also re-signed Lamont Warren, who didnt play that bad last year. If the team has to suffer through another bad year in order to build a super bowl winner then I could live with that for running back.

However, I dont think that will happen. I think Stewart will take the pay cut.

They will be checking the cuts and every other avenue. I still think Stewart will be released or have to take a paycut.

MotownRandy,

I didn't really like Lamont Warren at all last year. I'd rather seen Mario Bates (well maybe not now) back last year than Warren. What did you like about him? Just curious.

Mario Bates was just a clone of Stewart. Big, but too slow. The reason they like Warren is that he has good hands and runs well. They're probably fine at RB, and will look more for TE/SLB.

I watched Warren a few times. He seemed to run hard and pick up positive yardage(which was kinda rare for the team last year..haha). I know it wasnt on a consistent basis, but he broke off a few longer ones. I'm not saying he is the answer, but he is a veteran who has proven he can at least carry more of a load than the other Lions backups. We had Ron Rivers and Greg Hill for a year and finished .500, how bad could Warren be?

James Stewart is nothing special. He had a good offensive line in Jacksonville and made a name for himself there, since then, his only good games have been due to good blocking. He's not a back that can make something out of nothing.

He's got a decent enough line here, he should be able to do something. The only problem I see with Stewart is that he's not a home run threat, but he has everything else. He's a big, somewhat durable back who'll get you first downs and touchdowns, and should be good for 1200 yards if healthy. The biggest problem replacing him is that the Lions are married to him, so they need to restructure his contract to get it in the 3 million dollar range.

Atlanta has Duckett and now Warrick Dunn, so that means Jamal Anderson will be let go on June 1st. Is he worth offering a contract to? I would if he is over his leg problems.

Terrell Davis might be let go in June also. There might be some good bargins out there that could improve this team that we will have to wait til June to see.

Absolutely not interested in Anderson because of the injury issues, and cap reasons. Can't let that position ruin the cap any more than it already is. Would rather stick with Stewart, with a very watchful and interested eye on Luke Staley. He could be something special.;)

The lions will still be playing on an artificial surface and Jamal's leg injuries are reoccurrring...too risky. Stick with what we got for now. They are not gonna cut Terrell Davis.

its not really artificial turf from what Ive heard...its like the grass they have in the Seattle Mariners dome. maybe not real grass like that but it doesnt have the concrete crap underneath.

I'd rather not see Anderson come here. We've had enough problems with injury prone players in Batch.

I'm glad we didn't get Foster either. I saw him play against Cal out here, and I'm glad we didn't get him.

I'd prefer we resign Stewart at a lower price. He's not a long term solution, but he'll fill a hole until they can get someone good in there. And he will take a paycut, I think. The Lions'll cut him before they pay him, and no one else will gave anywhere near as much money as the Lions'll give him even with a paycut.

My other though is maybe a veteran like Watters if he doesn't retire. Does anyone know any hot RBs entering their senior year next year?
