First day summary (good or bad)

Recommended Posts

I was gone all day yesterday so was unable to post.

As of now I have to admit that I'm not to crazy with what we've done during this draft.

With that first pick there's no question what I would've done (if trading down was not an option). I would've picked Jammer. With the offseason moves we've made in the secondary we could've made this unit a perceived strength which would've meant a ton to the defense since we didn't have a single unit last year that you even felt "average" about. We blew that by picking up another quarterback, something I really loathe doing in the early rounds of any NFL draft.

One thing is certain from this day on the M&M gang will be based on what Joey Harrington does. In a way I understand what they are trying to say (you need strong QBs with this system or it will flop) but getting a QB when you supposedly have a starting QB when you could've filled another desperately important need makes little sense to me. If Harrington flops, the M&M gang better hope McMahon bails them out. They've made it apparent that offense is everything to these guys (I guess we've known that to be true with Marty from day one) and that the defense's cocnerns are secondary.

Before I go off on the second and third picks I have to say I've not heard about either one before, so my comments have to be taken with a grain of salt.

I'm not overly enthusiastic about taking an injury prone player with the second pick, who seems to lack a true position and a corner that's had knee problems.

I went into this draft thinking we would address our secondary concerns first and then look towards other areas. Right now I'm questioning the M&M duo's thought process for really the first time since they've been here.

We'll have to see how day 2 goes I guess.

Goodmans knee problem was 4 years ago,and it sounded like from what I read about him that it was mostly mental on his part getting back to form.He had trouble trusting his knee again, but he seems to have gotten over that last year.He is fast,a good cover guy and has great leaping ability. What more can you ask for in a corner? Some sources had him rated higher but for the question on his knee, not his performance. If he had injured it one or two years ago I'd be more concerned.

Edwards is a bit of a tweener right now but they think he can add 20 pounds quite easily. The fact he could play linebacker is an added bonus should he not be able to beat out DeVries right away,as his sack ability could still get on the field in passing situations. But I think he will live up to his potential and take the starting end job.

As for Harrington,I started out hoping for the trade down scenario but after hearing some of the draft gurus talk about Harringtons abilities, especially his ability to win games,I am of the opinion you have to grab a potential Troy Aikman type when he presents himself.Mac has shown only the ability to scramble so far,not to be accurate in his limited time.If we have guessed wrong that he is the guy at QB,then we had no other options and a guy like Harrington may not come around to us again. We would be left to try and over pay for lesser talent(as we did with Stewart when we had no running game)Harrington solidifies a good young QB position for several years.

I know the Lions want to bulk him up, but I kinda like the quickness Edwards brings. With the rest of the line, he will be on an island, and won't have offensive lines shifting their protection to his side. To that end, the Lions look like they'll have a terrifically balanced line next year. The only major need is at strong side linebacker, and they could do worse than to bring back Aldridge.

I have always liked Harrington. I had mixed feelings leading up to the draft, but when they selected him, I was happy. All the experts seemed to like the pick and Harrington has the potential to be the best player in the draft. I think M&M finally decided that they needed to make a big splash in this draft. They definately did. It is good because now McMahon will not be handed the starting QB job. There should be an open competition for it. At least one of them has to be good and it cant hurt to have two quality QB's on your team. Overall they may not have done great or as good as some past drafts, but it doesnt matter if Harrington ends up being the player he is supposed to be.

I guess I'm not all that upset. The Lions finally have something they haven't had yet in my lifetime. A franchise QB. I say that with caution.

I still have heard rumors that the Lions will or have signed Abrahms. So not drafting a DB isn't that bad IF they did indeed sign him.

They have improved the "D" line alot. This kid they drafted was projected as a mid to late 1st round pick and he fell to the Lions in the 2ond round.

The sleeper may be Staley the RB. The guy has some jets so He may be the dimond in the rough.

The Lions drafted 2 corners. If you're talking about Donnie Abraham, then no, I haven't heard a thing. He'd be very expensive, and the Lions would have to clear more space.
