Guillen and Garcia

Recommended Posts

These two guys are good friends and very good ballplayers. What are the chances the Tigers could sign them both for next year? Is Garcia a free agent next year?

Guillen has been doing a great job at short this year. Hopefully he can stay healthy for the full season. I wouldn't call him injury prone because some of his DL stints were very uncommon illnesses or injuries. I think it's important for the Tigers to sign him to a fair contract and maybe they could get a pretty good starter out of the deal too.

It was obviously a problem for the Mariners, but could be a blessing for the Tigers. If the Tigers are able to sign Guillen, that could go a long way to signing Garcia. I'd be careful how much money I paid Garcia though. I'm sure he'd be looking for 9 million or so, and I wouldn't want to go over 6 or 7 million per for 3-4 years.

I think Garcia will be a free agent cause the Mariniers will be consumed with trying to resign Ichiro. Cruzer you got it right though he will be asking alot. But I also think Barry Zito is a free agent this winter also.

Zito won't be a free agent after the season, but there is speculation that the A's might consider trading him.

If the Tigers have a decent season this year, will they be more attractive to big name free agents or will they have to "overpay" again?

If we keep playing well and are no longer considered a "graveyard" we'll have a lot more options. We'll still have to lay out the dough like everyone else. Hopefully not more than everyone else.

Actually, after last off-season, when the Tigers were one of the few teams "buying", I think word has spread among the players that there is money to be made here.

With the hitting and runs being put up pitchers will be looking at Detroit alot more now. The Tigers just need to take fielding practice and cut down on the errors.

The FA pitching class is solid. Matt Clement, Odalis Perez, Kevin Millwood, Derek Lowe, Pedro Martinez, and Matt Morris will be available.

Looks like Perez would be a good pickup. He will be 27. He is making $5 million this year being that he is young his agent will be ask around $10 mill. a year I would guess.

All they really need to do is sign one of those pitchers and hope that the young guys (Bonderman, Robertson, Sleeth) stay healthy.

They should be really putting the full court press on Guillen to get him signed to 3 more years.

Schmidt is locked up through 2005, with an option for 2006.

Ichiro is already signed. The problem the Mariners have with Garcia is he doesnt like the team management (Lincoln). They embarrassed him the last negotiation he had with him and he still remembers it. Hes young and strong, has a good arm and eats a lot of innings. What team couldnt use him? Throw on top of that his best friend is a Tiger and it looks good for Detroit.

Do the Tigers have anymore dead money paid to former players coming off their payroll after this year? I still wonder if Illich has DD on a budget? And if he will go any higher in the near future?

Didn't that work to get a closer. First though we need to sign the bestfriend.

I think Higgy gets a pay cut after this year and the Easley money will be back. Matt Anderson's contract I'm not to sure about but with all that money coming back the Tigers should be able to get a good pitcher and resign Guillen..

Higgy will get the same 8.85 next year. Just call him Robin Hood, Man in Tights (pilates).:classic:

Also, don't forget the Tigers will have alot of money they will owe UU when they excersize their option, and Pudge's contract goes way up next year. All that probably means a push.

(Ah, it is so easy to dream)

Yes a Zito, Bonderman, Garcia, Robertson, Maroth rotation would be quite nice.

Or they will owe an eighth of that money to the 3 prospects they have acquired for UU at the deadline.
