4/6 @ 1:10 Minnesota Twins vs Detroit Tigers

Yeah that's where I'm at.  From an uneducated point of view he seems to have alot of raw tools, shown to be able to hit pitches to all fields and from the limited time I've seen him could distinguish borderline pitches.   I also like the fact that there was a legit reason for him being in the Rule 5 draft other than just being bad(like most guys).  The Twins had a pretty deep system and he was coming off injuries that have sidelined him for a couple years.   A guy like that with a team that is in win now mode may have found expendable.

He reminds me a bit of Curtis, hopefully without the giant hole on inside breaking pitches.

What's really impressed me is his ability to just flip the ball opposite field. His bat stays in the zone really well. It doesn't seem like we see that a lot from LH hitters. not sure if he can keep doing that consistently but it's a damn good sign.

Watching some replays, I think Baddoo goes down and gets lower breaking pitches better than Curtis did, and bring his hands in better. i don't think he's going to have that same issue. He really coils and moves quite a bit so he's still going to get some k's but that's ok. He's going to hit a lot of baseball pretty hard. up, down, in, out, to all fields. He has the tools to be a really good hitter.

He will go 2-for-40 at some point, of course.  But he is such a great kid, with his head screwed on really right, that he will come out the other side.  What I love is that he has tools.  If you want to count up the Tigers' prospects over the past 40 years who have had tools, you won't have to take off your shoes.

This kid has awesome parents, he must.  And I am with Lee, there is an early Fidrych vibe going on here.

He does. They were interviewed during the game sunday after his HR.

Baddoo should start every game against RHP given who the other options are (Jones, Reyes, Mazara). I suspect he will start striking out a lot in due time and come back to Earth, but even if he is replacement level it is still worth the gamble because the other replacements don't have long-term futures with the club anyway and provide minimal upside for this season too. He's a legit prospect that would be top 10 to top 15 in basically any system, and could become an average starter one day. That would be quite the pickup if it happens.

They could shuffle things around vs RHPs such that Cabrera plays 1B (although maybe not everyday) opening up DH for an OF.  Jones doesn't need to play everyday vs RHPs.  Baddoo, Grossman, Mazara, and Reyes could get, what, 75%-80% of the OF/DH starts vs RHPs?

All of the Detroit pro sports teams are awful right now, and they have been for a while.  The Pistons have some nice younger players, but nothing that will draw if there weren't restrictions in place.  The Wings were able to entice Yzerman back, but there is a lot of work to be done.  The Lions are the Lions.

The Tigers have some young pieces in place for the future, but again, they've been dreadful for a while.  The pitchers are making their way up, but they're going through their growing phases and likely will have their innings limited this season.  Baddoo has been just pure fun so far, and its something that has been needed for not only the Tigers, but for the pro sports scene as well.

Just gotta enjoy it.  He probably will go 2 for 40 at some point, but he's definitely been a bright spot so far.

I'd like to hear @Microline133 thoughts on Baddoo.  Obviously he likely isn't this superstar that he looks like now but could he be more than just a flash in the pan?

There are going to be some serious struggles at times this year, but if there weren't we'd be talking about a generational player capable of jumping from A-ball to the big leagues.

In terms of talent, there's potential for a solid regular that adds value across the board. The defensive profile will work anywhere in the outfield. Offensively, he's definitely grown since I last saw him several years ago. It's pretty subbing the growth you can see in him having missed so much time the last two years.

If things continue to progress, he realistically could hang tough this year and then continue to stick next year in the big leagues.

If he can be as good as Granderson over the course of his career, I will be more than satisfied.  Realistically, I expect him to crash this year, but it is looking like the Tigers may have a acquired legit prospect.

The big step forward is obviously mostly a credit to Baddoo, but it is probably a feather in Scott Coolbaugh's cap as well.

Baddoo did credit Coolbaugh with helping him change his approach to the ball during his at bats. It probably also helps that at 22, Baddoo is young enough to accept those kinds of changes without pushing back trying to stick with what brung him here, which is more likely to occur with older players, even prospects.

If this is a big part of the reason, that gives me hope that Coolie will find some other rough diamonds in the system he can polish up.

I could find a way to live with it even if the Tigers have stumbled on a generational talent......

....
