2021 Offseason

Recommended Posts

This is a pretty deep draft for WR so I don't think they have to take one at 7, if Chase falls to 7 sure but you could potentially get a good one in the 2nd round or perhaps trading back up in the first and getting somebody like Moore, Marshall or Bateman.

No franchise tag for Romeo Okwara as well. Okwara is a guy I would have franchised given just how dreadful this defense and pass rush was.

they offered him $18 million per year and he turned it down.  and he's coming off an "injury" plagued season.  and the cap is getting tighter.  and quinn saddled the lions with little talent and even less cap space.

i can totally see letting him go if they assumed he would not take a long term deal even if they did franchise him.  franchising him kills any cap space they might have had.

c'est la vie, kenny.  good luck to him.

i'm willing to wager he'll have that "hip issue" cleared up really soon and it wont be an problem next season.

If this means we get a new QB this year or next I am fine with it. I don't hate Goff, but I'd rather build around a rookie QB with a rookie contract. Short of them making a splash signing a WR, this could mean their offense takes a step back next year, which sets them up nicely for a top 5 pick and any QB they want.

I'd rather role with Goff, build up the rest of the team and wait till 2021 or possibly even 2022 to draft the qb.

Were 2-3 years from  likely being serious contenders so if you draft a QB now you're just wasting those cheap years.  As soon as we get good he is going to be due for a huge raise anyway.

i wouldnt franchise okwara either.

the lions are in a rebuild.  take the comp picks if they get them.

if the lions think lance or wilson or fields is the next deshaun watson, then you draft them.  its no guarantee you'll be able to draft a qb this high in the future.

if you think they're all just a bunch of tuas, then you take the best player available.

i think the lions will end up taking a receiver or a tackle or trading down.  i think the qb talk is a smokescreen to get someone to trade up for one.

given the uncertainty surrounding last season and the inability to do a normal scouting routine, i'm not sure i want to take a qb this year.

This is what I think is most likely too. Chase, Waddle, Smith or Sewell are the most likely non-QB picks. If and when they pass on taking Fields/Lance/Wilson and one of those guys is still there at #7 I'd be stunned if they couldn't find a trading partner. Carolina at #8, Denver at #9, San Fran at #12, Washington at #19 are all workable deals for the Lions. Other than taking a QB or maybe Chase, there aren't other players at #7 that I would want to take over the haul we could get for trading back.

If the organization waits until 2022 than they are seemingly saying they don't like any of these QBs as much as they like Kedon Solvis, Sam Howell, whoever is available next year.

i still feel like the top 4 picks will be qbs (miami trades down).  i also feel like someone will reach for mac jones in the top ten.

Or they like Goff and don't plan to take a QB this year or next. Goff wasn't a throw in or salary dump.

If they think they can fix the turnover problems he's had and get this offense humming then fine. I don't hate Goff and if they are going to commit to Goff than they need to rebuild this thing as quickly as possible so as not to squander Goff's years here.

Getting rid of Kenny and replacing him with either Chase, Waddle, Pitts, or Smith, a 3rd rounder in 2022, and added salary cap space this year to sign multiple defensive FA’s is a very good deal to me.

i dont think the lions or red wings are tanking, theyre just bad.

the pistons are tanking.  the tigers have been tanking for the last 4 years.

Well, one thing is for sure... Without Kenny, Goff just became a worse QB.

Had they re-signed him, the team would have had the makings of a balanced offense. They had better hit on a WR (or two) in this draft, and he better get acclimated to the NFL right away, or this team will really struggle offensively.

There's quite a few FA wide receivers out there.  I don't know if we will be in on any of them but if we do sign one of them to go along with Williams, Hockenson, Swift, Cephus and a likely early draft pick our pass catching group might not be all bad.

whither geronimo allison?  cephus was bad last year, is very slow, and is likely to be out of the league if he doesnt pick it up this year.

if the lions are building a corps of receivers like the rams, they will prioritize speed.

hock is a good tight end.  swift showed some good flashes last year.  but those guys are tight ends and running backs, not receivers.

williams is fast but always hurt.  dont know what he'll be next year.

one thing is for sure, the lions need lots of receivers, specifically ones who run fast.

Does the organization recognize this and cut Goff some slack or if he comes out and struggles next year do they draft a QB in 2022 and cut bait on him? This will be the key question going into and coming out of next season I think. If the offense struggles, Goff continues to have a turnover problem and his numbers are significantly down on top of that I would think it gives the organization thoughts about whether or not he is going to be their long term option at QB. The good news is when addressing that, if the Goff does struggle next season, it is likely to mean we end up picking in the top 3-5 and will have a shot at a top QB prospect whether it is Sam Howell, Kedon Solvis, whoever.

I agree. I was against giving him the franchise tag with his injury history. The question is whether he was dogging it or seriously hurt? We can sign or draft a couple of receivers for that kind of money. I'm sure Kenny will sign with another team and have a great season.

I thought even though Cephus was slow that he had no problem getting open/ creating space last year? By technique or otherwise...

But I agree on getting some fast receivers on the team; and those that can create separation as well (speed doesn't always do it... add in some route-running technique...).

The receiver they take at 7 (assuming they go that route) could quite likely be as good as Golladay in the next two years and for like a third of the cost. This isn't taking into account the possibility of Golladay declining in his late 20s, early 30s as most receivers do. With the extra money, they could have 1st pick receiver plus free agent like Reynolds or Samuel or Davis or fill other areas of need.

Goff wouldn't be any better with Kenny sitting at home playing video games. If he dogged his injury waiting for a contract extension, imagine how bad he would dog it under the franchise tag? No reason to pay one player that kind of money during a rebuild. Especially one who negotiates thru Twitter when he finally has a good game. Let some other team take the cap hit...he may need to play cheap for a year to prove he can stay healthy.

Or Marvin Jones? Good team player.

i agree with one caveat: if they sign a bunch of free agents they risk losing the comp pick for okwara and golladay.  or at least having it lowered from a third to something below that.
