Blake Griffin To Sit Until Traded/Bought Out

I can't believe some of the comments I'm seeing about this buyout.

A small amount of people actually think Blake will decline his option next year to go play for a ring.  Quite a few more feel we will get a 50% discount.

The Pistons have no incentive to buy him out if he doesn't make any salary concessions so it's up to him to give up some of next years' salary if he really wants out. Otherwise, the Pistons can just sit him until they find a trade partner either this year or next and deal him as an expiring by next years' deadline or let the contract simply expire.

this is exactly right, but OTOH, the Piston have little incentive to turn down even a small concession from Griffin effect a deal. The contract is a sunk cost and anything they get back is found money.

The Piston's only leverage is how much Griffin is willing to pay to play somewhere in the next two years. They can hold him hostage for that amount but no more. If he doesn't care if he plays (which granted, seems unlikely), they could get nothing back. The 'negotiation' is all about Blake wanting to give up less than his bottom line number and the Piston's not having any idea how far to hold out since they can't know what that bottom line number is.

I think Detroit would be dumb to hold up Blake like that.  The rest of the league is watching and holding Blake over a barrel to get a few extra bucks out of him isn't worth it.
