The trade deadline is March 25, but I think we will see some activity on this pretty soon. I think a trade is pretty unlikely, so I think this probably ends in a buyout agreement. Getting that cap number down from 39 million to a lower number for 2021/2022 should be the Pistons' top priority.

what a total waste bringing him here was.

Desperate move by a desperate Van Gundy.

Hats off to Griffin. A lot of star players would've never done what he did. Never complained, showed up, played hard, mentored young players. Did everything right. For God's sake he practically led the league in charges drawn the one year.

The year he carried us to the 8 seed he played at an unbelievable level. Would've been nice to have seen him play that year with an actual team around him, instead of the bums Jackson and Drummond.

Yep, hats off to him.  I hope he can go somewhere and win something.   It would be nice if we could get something for him.

Griffin has been a pro despite being traded into an impossible situation.  His statement about the situation and being grateful to the Pistons is solid.

I can’t see a trade, seems pretty impossible without Detroit adding picks and/or taking on a longer term liability.  It’d probably be best for both parties to buy him out.  Detroit can move on, use the roster spot, play younger guys.  Griffin gets a chance as a free agent to latch on to find his best opportunity.

The Pistons will buy him out.  Someone will take a flyer on him for the rest of the season and he will have no impact in a deep reserve role and quickly find the end of the bench and won’t.    That will be his last run in the NBA.

traded?  bwaa haa ha haa.  gtfo.

blake is one of the most unmovable contracts in the league.  who would pay $39 million for a role player?

what contract would the pistons have to eat and how many draft picks would they have to attach to get a team to take blake?

john wall for blake and a protected first?  westbrook for blake and a first?

btw, this is bad news for the pistons' tank considering they play so much better without blake.

You need to attach a first just so a team takes Blake.  Wall has value on his own so it would take more than a first.  Please no on Westbrook.

I also think they play better without Blake.  But they won 30% of the games Blake played and only 28% of the ones he sat.  So the results, in a small sample size, don't match the eye test so far.

I think his take on Harden is way off.  Sure people trashed him, but it was deserved.  That team was built in a very unconventional way to highlight Hardens playstyle.  He specifically asked for CP3. It didn't work out and he asked for him to get bounced.  Then he asked for Westbrook. That didn't work out and Harden himself wanted to bounce so he gained 20 pounds and loafed till he was traded.  He got everything he asked for and it still wasn't enough for him to hit the escape pod button.

NBA is a weird place right now. Isn't what Draymond talking about in effect what should be the equivalent of a DFA in baseball? I guess I don't get why you don't just release a guy instead of separating them from their team as per Drummond and Griffin. That does create a bad/strange look IMO.

They don't release them because they hope a trade can still be worked out.

If a trade center be fine they hope a buyout can be negotiated to save some money.

i dont want them to trade for wall or westbrook, i was just trying to think of actual trades that could be accomplished.

the pistons would have to take back a salary that was worse than blake's on a longer contract than blake's AND attach a valuable asset in the deal just to get teams to consider it!  blake griffin is done.

i dont like westbrook's game, but at least he can still play at a high level.  blake isnt even close to that.  same with wall.

someone mentioned Horford/Blake. Horford (~27, 27, 27) has an extra year and about 10M more in total due.

Blake would go "home". Not sure why OKC would do that even if Weaver added an asset.

Blake is going to have to forfeit a good chunk of that 39 million if he really wants to play elsewhere otherwise they're stuck with each other through next season so ultimately this comes down to how badly he wants to move on. He's going to have to sacrifice a lot of money to do so.

Also, why are you guys even discussing trade? No chance, not even Weaver is dumb enough to attach a valuable asset just to make Griffin happy. It'll be buy out or he's stuck here if he doesn't want to give back much salary.

I can't believe some of the comments I'm seeing about this buyout.

A small amount of people actually think Blake will decline his option next year to go play for a ring.  Quite a few more feel we will get a 50% discount.

Am I the only one to think that Blake is done.  His body is damaged beyond repair.  He can barely jump anymore.    I can’t imagine him sticking on any roster for long.  I think he’ll get a few chances that will quickly turn into him getting waived.

If we actually saw Blake at 100% this year then he is done.

I have a sneaky suspicion that we saw Blake in, "**** it, why bother" mode.

The Athletic had a round table where they said buyout, there just is no trade, maybe he settles for 70 cents on the dollar

I was wondering along the same lines. 31 isn't that old - though maybe more so for his style of play. AFIAK he doesn't have some single chronic injury that is never going to go away again does he?

Not that I am aware of.

His entire game was based on athleticism and power.  Guys like that tend to fall off a cliff pretty fast if they don't have basketball skills to fall back on.
