Smith ringing bricks and Charlotte's 2nd rounder for the rebuild.  This should help solidify Detroit's last place standing.

Maybe they can package the their 2nd round picks for an autographed Isiah Thomas jersey.

I can't believe there were people who thought the Pistons could get a first round pick for Rose.

Rose is exactly what he is: a guy who can get to the rim but can't shoot.  That's got some value in the League, but not a ton of value.

There's value in getting Rose off of the roster now.  There's a chance he helps them win another piddly game or two which, in turn, reduces their lottery odds.  Or there's a chance he injures himself and they get nothing in return.  But now he's gone, they get a young player with an expiring rookie contract in return to evaluate, and they get a draft pick.  It'd be nice to have gotten their own 2nd back, but the tiers of players available then are more alike one another in terms of value.  The difference between 31 and 40 is much thinner than 1 and 10.

They weren't resigning him.  They moved him.  They got a young player in return.  They got a draft pick in return.  They've likely increased their playoff odds.  Mission accomplished.

Correct. The question with Rose is what on earth did they ever want him for in the first place?

So their bench play wouldn't completely fall off the map without at least a competent PG to man that position...

I hope you're not under the impression that I thought they should KEEP Rose?  God no.  Rose is a bad player and getting him off this team is the best thing FOR this team.  The team plays better when Rose is NOT on the floor.

Actually, if they really wanted to tank, they would keep Rose and play him more because that's how bad he is.  The problem with that is that Rose inhibits the growth of any young player on the team with his constant ball hogging and lack of effort on defense.

Removing Rose for a second round pick and salary filler is fine with me.  But the thought you could get more for him is and was silly.  No team was giving you a first round pick for Derrick Rose (despite what you might hear from his agent in the coming days and the "many team were surprised the Pistons traded Rose for a second rounder when there was interest from teams for a possible first").

The only good thing about Rose is that people who play with him genuinely seem to like him.  No matter how many stupid things he says and dumb **** he does, his teammates like the guy.  He appears to be a good guy who is just a selfish ball hog who can't shoot and who isn't the amazing athlete he used to be so he can't get away with it anymore.

I thought before the season that he could possibly return a 1st round pick from a championship contender (not a team like the Knicks) but he was awful this season so that became a pipedream.

Kind of like Drummond, it's a positive just to get him off the roster. Hopefully Griffin opts out after the season and the last remnants of the SVG/Stefanski era will be gone for good then the real rebuild can begin.

No, I wasn’t.  I mean, you’re foolish, but you’re not a fool 😄.  I only mentioned keeping him because theoretically it is an option, albeit highly doubtful and utterly asinine for them to try to.

Now, while I would agree with you he’s a bad player, he’s still capable of scoring in bunches to keep them in a game or stealing a close & late game.  Not as often or as consistent as in the past maybe, but I think he still has enough gas in the tank for it to occur.

Griffin ain’t opting out. $40M.  Ain’t happening.

Could he be bought out?  How does that affect the salary cap?

Yep.  No way is he opting out.

His cap number goes from $40M to whatever he was bought out for.  So if they pay him $32M to walk away, his new cap number is $32M.

Technically they could stretch it but that would be a terrible decision.

The S word occurred to me, but I didn’t want to say it out loud.  Thankfully the Pistons don’t have a history of making that bad decision.

Oh, wait.....

If you are a contender and Blake is bought out, do you even want him at the vet minimum?

What does he bring to a team? Stand around and Jack up three pointers at a terrible rate.

He never made the transition from athletic freak to a player with some basketball skills like McDyess did.

Always felt bad for McDyess about that finals loss to the Spurs.  I had forgotten he was with Detroit for 5 seasons, thought it was only 3.

Anyway, as far as Griffin is concerned, you have to think he has a number in mind for a buyout, right?  And he'll take his chances with signing on with a contender, and maybe those back channel conversations have been had?  He certainly isn't going to be a "big three" type of component going forward, but maybe there's a team out there that thinks they can convince and employ him off of the bench, assuming shorter minutes will allow him to play better?  A buyout seems more likely than a trade.  And Gores finally allowed himself to trade Drummond for not much, so maybe Gores' attachment on chasing the playoffs and/or his current stars has been placed on the back burner in lieu of a complete rebuild?

For 21-22, pay him $30m? Save $8.9m? Maybe he makes $1-2m of that back signing with playoff team? Regardless he looks done and is only taking minutes from Grant, Bey, Stewart, Sekou. No need to humiliate Blake, so it would nice to come to some mutual agreement.

Don't you take my hope away from me.

Of course it's highly unlikely but I will hold on to that slight glimmer of hope that he values happiness over money and leaves the money on the table, since he already has an absurd amount of money, to get out of here asap until that hope fades completely.

I would offer $65M and see what he thinks.  But I would also be fine with just cutting him.
