Filling out the roster

Recommended Posts

With all the talk about 2nd base, why aren't we actively pursuing Jonathon Schoop.  He did extremely well the short time he was here and sure was a fan inspiration at a time when there wasn't much to shout about.  He did adequately defensively, had some clout, and hit in the clutch.  To boot, word was that he was a fine role model for younger players with his work attitude, desire and willingness to share.  He's not that old and he seems like a boost for the team as well as fans.

either him or a 1B.  probably don't need both.  I'd prefer getting a 1B to share with Miggy (i.e., Cron), allowing Candelario to move back to 3B and use Paredes at 2B.  At some point, these youngsters need to get 500 AB's to see what we have in them.  Schoop is a stopgap that will just block someone who needs AB's.  Another consideration is Willi Castro--I have my doubts that he will last at SS defensively--if he can't handle it, but continues to hit, he could slide over to 2B, with Goodrum finishing the season at SS.

how do we know they are not or were not or weren't tuned down?  I actually wonder if they were pursuing someone who said no or at least changed their view toward the 2b FA market in general because of the recent announcement that when Paredes gets done down South he is going to be worked out at 2nd. It was such an obvious move that the fact they hadn't talked about it all winter might be explained by the fact they had been thinking about a FA there.

there will be a bunch of guys who will take anything offered in 2 weeks

tigers clearly don't care who they sign, so long as they are cheap

You acquire players based on what you think they'll do under the contract, not based on what they did over just 40 games the year before. Only one other time has he hit that well and that was 2017. It was likely a result of small sample size and would have regressed over the course of a full season.

They may also be moving Paredes to 2B.

This needs to be the last stopgap year. Next year go on a spending spree. I called Lindor to the Tigers 5 years ago. Unless he signs the extension with the Mets (which I doubt he'd do), I still think he's the primary choice.

Add Bryant now (I wont get into that here), Lindor, Syndergaard and Gregory Polanco (stop gap 1 year contract so Greene has time in the minors) next year.

1. Paredes - 2B
2. Candelario 3B
3. Lindor - SS
4. Torkelson - 1B (going to happen regardless what he thinks)
5. Grossman - LF
6. Cabrera - DH
7. Cameron - CF
8. Polanco - RF
9. Rogers/Dingler - C
Bryant is your super Sub

Rotation:
Mize
Manning
Skubal
Thor
Turnbull

Oh to Dream....... (Long term I have no confidence Cameron, Polanco, Grossman or Candelario are pieces to stick around beyond the next 3 years. All need to be replaced with better players at their positions. Although the 2020 draft looks promising with Daniel Cabrera and Gage Workman being able to fill LF and 3B long term. Not to mention Green in RF. Now we just need a CF.)

I'd love a trade for Victor Robles or even sign Buxton the following year (I think he's a FA). The core pieces are there....

we are not swiping Lindor and Syndergard from the Mets who have by far the wealthiest MLB owner.

Dingler and Tork have 0 pro at bats; perhaps we see Tork late 2022, but not realistic that Dingler will be up in 2022.

Bryant as super sub behind Grossman, Polanco and Candy? Wha?

dream is right

I guess I just want to clarify this a little.

The Mets financial Cap is screwy. They will be way over the limit of the luxury tax if they sign Lindor, Syndergaard, and give extensions to Conforto and DeGrom. I really don't think they can keep all. Also too, Thor is ready to get out of there I think. With how everything went with the catchers last few years, I think Thor was really put off by the leadership there.

Next note. I really think we'll see Tork this year. Wouldn't surprise me if they did an August/September callup on him. Dingler, I think will wait a year like you said.

The reason why I say Bryant is a super sub is I think he'd play every day, just not as a main position. He cant play RF at all, but LF, 1B, 3B are all realistic possibilities for him. I think he'd be in the lineup every day, just wouldn't have 1 set position. Also, Grossman is mainly LF guy. So pushing him to RF every day isn't really an option but he could play there in a pinch to give Polanco (in this scenario) a day off. Candy would start over Bryant until Bryant shows he's rebounded completely. Candy did have a good year last year batting .297/.369/.503. However that was also with a unsustainable .372 BABIP. So until Bryant surpasses him every day value (which I very well could see after the first month), I think Candy would start over Bryant in this scenario.

I really don't expect this all to happen. But just a scenario I could throw out. But that is at least the reasoning behind it.

Scot Moreland fits our team best and our need for power. lefty bat and first base against Righties. Candy plays third when Moreland plays and Paredes second. Then when Moreland sits against lefties Candy plays first and Paredes plays third with Castro at second and Goodrum at short. That way we evaluate Paredes at 2b/3b and Castro at SS(most starts)/ 2b so we know who to pursue next off season.

Depending on how he does this year I think Tork could be ready by the start of 22, whether they actually do that or wait to delay the start of his clock  is another story though.

Agree about the rest though.

IMHO, I think they are monitoring the waters. Between MGonzalez, KWong, JSchoop, JVillar, JLamb, MMoreland, ADuvall, MFranco, CJCron, RNunez and maybe a couple others depending if an OF will don a 1B glove and learn the position better (JBruce?) - I see them trying to get at least 1 and maybe 2 more position players AND a SP.

Better chance to see Greene. We didn't see much of him last spring but in what we did he seemed pretty close to handling advanced pitching. He fell off some after his last promotion in his rookie season but he also said he was out of gas, not being prepared for how long his 1st pro year would be.

That's gonna make it tough to give Miguel his two days a week at at first......

1b is definitely the position I feel they need the most whether it be Cron or Moreland. mainly cause they can then move Candy back to 3rd where he belongs.

I'm fine with 2b with Paredes, Goodrum and Harold Castro.   I know Paredes is still only 21 but I think he is at the point where he isn't going to get much better in the minors, I think it's time to sink or swim with him and see what he has.

Playing Candelario at first rather than third seems insane to me.  He plays third well and doesn't play first well.  So, I agree that acquiring a first baseman is a good idea.

agreed. But Candelario's bat is still not enough of a sure thing to worry that much about where to play him.

Play him at the position where he is most comfortable and then he can focus any extra work on the hitting.

In general, put the guy as high up the defensive spectrum as reasonably possible.

You can say the same thing about their entire roster.

I actually don't think he'll hit well enough to be a first baseman which is more reason to keep him at third.

lots of moving parts for the Tigers to sort out. If Paredes hits but doesn't control his weight - he probably knocks Candelario off 3rd, or if Torkelson can play the position adequately he knocks Candelario off of third --  but as you well note, Jeimer's bat probably doesn't rate 1b. I don't think it's a comfortable feeling to be Jeimer right now with half the team gunning for your spot. Hopefully it drives him harder without messing up his mind!

On the other hand, he's statistically the best combo bat & glove at 3B heading into camp.  Paredes couldn't hit and it sounds like he is destined for time at 2B.  They can try Torkelson at 3B, but he hasn't played there since high school.

Funny to say about the best hitter and defensive infielder (3B) on the current team.

the 'best hitter' designation is based on a single hot streak that was all of 140 PA long as compared to the 1000 PA before it. I hope its real but the evidence is insufficient to have any high level of confidence.
