Bryant isn’t a position of need.  Go get an elite SS and/or OF

I want a catcher or a CF, but there don't appear to any youngish catchers available

Not saying I would do it for Bryant but there is a benefit of getting the player and having exclusive negotiation rights with him for a year.    For instance if the Dodgers never traded for Mookie Betts and he hit FA this year there's a chance that they either A would have spent a lot more money outbidding other teams or B. another team would have outbid them so if they didn't trade for him last year they may not have him right now.

But Bryant WILL be a free agent after the year.  Boras is his agent.  So you'd be getting a guy coming off an injury plagued year where he wasn't very good for $19 million and he will not sign with you.  And you're giving up prospects to do it.

If the Tigers were a team that would be in the mix for a playoff spot, then maybe you do it for the rental (and the fact that the cubs are taking pennies on the dollar to sell anyone making any money), but the Tigers are one of the worst teams in the league.  There's no point in trading one of their lottery picks for Bryant.

The only reason to do it would be if the Cubs were willing to take a bunch of magic beans and then the Tigers hope Bryant bounces back and they can deal him at the deadline for better prospects.

This.  Anything other than a salary dump, where they throw in some money and accept Brock DeathRage and Andre Lipsious in return, it’s a hard pass.

Again I wasn't saying Bryant in particular, I was just saying that there is value in trading for a guy despite him only having a year left of control.

Now if you offer Javy Baez, maybe I change my mind....

Trading for Bryant right now seems like going all in to call with a 2,8 off-suit to see the flop.

Kinda... I haven't played poker in a while.

I'm wondering what sense it makes to spend prospect and monetary capital on a player who hits free agency after this year.

Trade Justin Thompson, Frank Catalanotto, Gabe Kapler, and Francisco Cordero to pull it off.

Don’t forget Alan Webb and catcher Bill Haselman.

I had to look it up...been a while.

I didn't forget them. They got the recognition merited.

This is what I was thinking. If he pulls off a .900 OPS, we can at least offer him an QO and get a COMP A pick from him. If he's on fire and the team stinks, we trade him at the deadline. If he's on fire and loves it here, we just DID add an OF. He can play LF. Not to mention, he still pounds lefties....  .286 BA and a .429 OBP vs lefties is a down year... I'll take that. I think the benefits far outweigh the risk. Assuming we don't give up any of our top prospects. (I'd say our top 15 should be off limits). If we can get him for cheap on the prospect side, but pay the $$$, I see no reason not to take a flyer on him. Illitch said he'd spend. This is the EXACT type of gamble where he can put his money where his mouth is.
