Lions and Stafford Agree To Part Ways

Recommended Posts

Is it at all realistic to expect we could do an NBA style trade in the NFL where you take on salary/a bad contract for a draft pick? San Francisco gets Stafford and Detroit gets Jimmy G plus 49'ers 1st + 2nd this year + a 2nd or 3rd next year? So we essentially get an extra 2nd or 3rd for taking on a bad contract with Jimmy G.

Garoppolo's contract is not bad. It's only $2.8 million in dead cap. SF can cut him post June and save $25 million. SF is not paying anyone to take on the contract when they can just cut him.

Garoppolo's guarantee was only $48 million. The Lions can take it on and if it doesn't work, they can cut him and the cap hit is only $1.4 million. His 2021 and 2022 salary is not guaranteed. The contract is not as bad as it seems. ****, Chase Daniel is owed more guaranteed than Garoppolo. It would cost more right now to cut Daniel than to cut Garoppolo.

Isn't there an unwritten rule about not trading within your division? I don't follow pro football but I do find the subject of another good player leaving the Lions interesting.

Only draft picks would go between the Bears and Lions. We would never trade Stafford to Chicago.

???

49'ers trade Garrapolo to the Bears for draft picks (2nd and 3rd).

Lions trade Stafford to the 49'ers for their 1st and 2nd round draft picks plus the Bears' picks that the 49'ers picked up in trading Garrapolo.

How are we trading with the Bears...?

If Garoppolo is worth a 2nd and 3rd, I would rather just take him and flip him for the 2nd and 3rd. The 49ers would probably do their 2nd which is 43rd, one of their 3rd round comps, a 1st next year and Garoppolo. The Lions use Garoppolo as a stopgap. If he stays healthy, big if, the Lions may be able to flip him for more picks. If he doesn't stay healthy, they cut him and take the $1.4 million cap hit.

I'd be leary of getting a future 1st from SF cause I think with Stafford and a healthy defense that team could be really good next year,  particularly in that division where I see Seattle and LA both potentially being on the decline so there's a good chance that pick ends up in the mid 20s.

I think I missed that. :)

That's why I don't think SF is going to be willing to give up the 12th pick. As a trade off, the Lions can acquire more later round picks this year and gamble on the 1st next year.

So we would get a 1st, 2nd and 2 3rd round picks for Stafford? OK, I'll play that game. It'll never happen though. For 2 years of Stafford? Maybe a 1st and a 3rd.

At least 3 years since they can franchise Stafford and possibly more with an extension.

You can take care of that with conditional picks.

A conditional 3rd in 2023 turns into a 2nd if Stafford signs an extension (franchise or otherwise)...

If we could get the 9th pick that would be a dream.   We could then potentially get our qb at 7 and still possibly get one of the top WRs or Parsons at 9.

Also Denver has a lot of young weapons so I think it's a place Stafford could really excel,  unfortunately for them they're in the same division as KC though.

Broncos would be an ideal location from the lions perspective.  Two top 10 picks is a good way to start a retool.  If you draft correctly that could set you up for years.  Luckily the lions have loaded the cupboards with good talent evaluators who draft really well.  The lions offseason thus far has been really good.  The stafford trade will either continue the trend or raise question.   If you trade with the colts they are going to need to offer more than other teams considering they are in the 21st spot. They should be in win now mode though, they might be willing to offer some things up.

There's demand.

The Lions fans who think losing Stafford is a miracle are probably in for a rude awakening.

As a fan of the Lions, I want to get as much as possible for him. I would rather he stay and be happy (and win). But if he has to go, I wish him all the success in the world. The guy is a warrior, a true team leader and team player. All those horrible rosters and poor coaching we had and we heard very little complaint from him. That didn't mean he didn't care, complaining just isn't his style.

As for what we get for him, I expect much less than most of you. Low expectations will mean more approval if we get more. And it would be less disappointing if we didn't get a lot for him.

The contract makes Stafford more valuable right now.

If they do the Denver trade to get their pick at #9 + a 2nd or 3rd that would open up so many possibilities from an asset acquisition perspective. They could draft their QB at #7 and then trade the #9 pick to move down and acquire additional 2nd or 3rd round picks. If Denver is in the mix that's the best trade option possible.

If you were presented with these two trade scenarios for Stafford which one would you take.

Trade #1:

Denver Gets: Matt Stafford

Detroit Gets: Denver's 2021 1st at #9 and a 2021 2nd

Trade #2:

Indianapolis Gets: Matt Stafford

Detroit: Indianapolis's pick at #21 + a 2022 1st round pick

Denver easily.  You can probably get a 2022 1st out of the 2021 2nd if you really want it, let alone the possible trade down scenerio you offered.

I don't think Denver is going to trade the 9th and 40th picks in the draft. It will need to start with the 9th pick. I could see a 3rd this year and a 2nd or 3rd next year. I would consider the Colts proposal if they kick in another pick. It may not be a bad idea to spread the draft capital over two drafts instead of putting all your eggs in this draft.

If the Broncos offer the 9th pick, you take it and run. Anything added to that is a bonus. A 2nd or 3rd rounder in addition to #9 seems too ambitious.

If that materializes, I hope the Lions don't do something stupid like package 9+7 to move up to 2. Take whichever QB drops to 7 and the best defensive player on the board on 9 (Parsons god willing) or BPA if somebody like Chase or Smith drops.

if detroit gets another top 10 pick, how sad will you be when they package both their top 10 picks to move up and take a qb at #3?
