Lions and Stafford Agree To Part Ways

I was going to go out on a limb and guess this as Detroit's return for trading Stafford... but it looks like I am way behind the times.

But I will say that.

I am guessing that Holmes gets two 1sts, two 2nds, and a conditional 2nd (If Stafford signs an extension then it turns into a 1st, if not, it remains a 2nd...). So either two 1sts and three 2nds, or three 1sts and two 2nds.

And maybe also one player... but don't hold me to that.

I'm just guessing.

The news was likely going to come out one way or another. It's not like they can go "psst Indy, SF, Pittsburgh, New England, New York, Washington... any of y'all want a QB??" and have that not come out somewhere.

With it out in the open like this, hopefully two teams will enter a bidding war.

Or five teams.

I think this is what happens.

Stafford is the premium QB available. Anyone saying otherwise is out in left field.

And there will be several teams, not 1 or 2, looking for the PREMIUM QB to get them into the Super Bowl.

Stafford never won in the playoffs? Meaningless. Other teams will simply look at the Lions as a dysfunctional team (they are not wrong), and that Stafford never had a chance with the Lions. End of statement.

And let me amend this... If it's the 49'ers, it could be two 1sts, two 3rds (this year), a 2nd (next year), and a conditional 2nd (in 2023, same terms as above... could be a 1st if he signs an extension...).

I think that's a lot more than Stafford gets.

Something like a 1, 4, 6 and a 2 next year is most likely

FWIW, when I said Holmes might get to have two 1sts and two 2nds, I meant that the lions might get a 1st and a 2nd for Stafford, giving them two of each.

shocking that it was Stafford - and not the Lions - who could see it was time to move on, but in many ways it is not shocking at all, what else would anyone expect from this team

as others have said, Stafford's league reputation is probably higher outside of Michigan than inside; they should get a really good return

Why would the Lions come out and say this (if they did).........they just weakened their position.     Ugh...........

For the umeteenth time, no it doesn;t.

1. It wasn't a secret

2. Too many teams need QBs

3. And Stafford is the Premium get out there.

4. And teams' viewpoint of Stafford outside of Detroit, IMO, will be exceptionally high.

Absolutely correct... announcing that Stafford is available will have ZERO detriment to his value; and, CONVERSELY, will drive a bidding war for his services.

A-Hah!

So I'm the first to go WAY out on a limb and state the belief that Stafford will get us a premium return package!

I can live with that.

I like the way you guys think. I was thinking just a 1st and 3rd.

He's a good QB

Defensive end from SF went for pick 13. Seattle gave up two ones for a safety.

49ers don't have 2 1st rd picks. you mean 1st rd in 21 and 22? won't happen

I will be astonished if the return for Stafford, given his age, injury history, and contract, includes more than one first-round pick.

Stafford has a team friendly contract and has only missed 8 games the past 10 years. 33 isn't exactly old when QBs are playing until age 40.

He will probably start more games over the next five years than Tua and Sam Darnold put together.

I agree the offer for him may be less than some people expect. Maybe he'll stay and we could draft some defense instead of a QB. If the offers aren't there, keep him.

He's gone

They will get at least one first round pick, everyone agrees on that, might as well accept he won't be here next year

The three bases I have for stating that:

1) The teams bidding on him will be in the mid-20's, except the Patriots. So to them two 1sts may be no issue whatsoever.

2) Make one of the picks a conditional 2nd. If he signs an extension with his new team, that turns into a 1st. I could see Playoff level teams open to that if they know they've got Stafford for the next 6 years team-friendly, instead of the next 2.

3) There are multiple Playoff level teams looking for QB's this year. One of them is going to be high bidder.

Let's just see what happens when the bidding ends and Stafford is officially traded...

Lot of buzz around SF who has the 12th pick. Washington is a real possibility at 16. Possibly Denver at 9 but I doubt it. The Lions can use SF at 12 to leverage more picks from the Colts.

If we get the 12th pick I'll pipe down on my multiple picks scenario...

In some ways I would prefer the multiple picks over high pick. It may be wise to spread the draft capital over two drafts instead of putting all the eggs in this draft basket.

It’s also possible that a trade will include player(s) as well as picks.
