Lions reserve coaching staff v The GOAT

I remember when the Lions should have drafted Haskins to replace Stafford.

Haskins could probably still go either way - he's a fabulous talent if someone can get his head right. (of course they said the same of Ryan Leaf!)

I still think the "ultimatum" gets overstated.  If everything Quinn did this past offseason was done just to make the playoffs he wouldn't have traded Slay and in turn used a 3rd pick on a corner.   Yes Slay was declining but he almost certainly would have contributed more this year than a mid round pick. Also corners always struggle their first year so why would he draft one with the 3rd pick knowing that it likely wouldn't make an impact on this season?

That's very possible, though in the case of Slay I get the impression the breach between Patricia and Slay was past repairing. But whether it affected Quinn's actions significantly was less my original point than that I think that kind of thing is a poorly considered action by ownership. Another view is that Quinn may have known full well the Lions were still not a playoff level team and so he just did his job as well as he knew how, what he would have done anyway, just out of personal pride, knowing he would likely be looking for work about now no matter what he did.  Just because a guy isn't particularly good/successful at  his job doesn't mean he's a bad guy. Just because it may have been the case with Patricia doesn't mean it's the case with everyone....xD

Shifting gears from a debate that we will certainly revisit.

SF completely shuts down Arizona despite being down more defensive starters than the Lions and also being on a permanent road trip.   It couldn’t have been more obvious from watching the Lions defense and comparing it to the Niners game that Rob Saleh needs to be the next Lions head coach.  I hope there’s a private plane ready to take him from Arizona to Detroit next Sunday night.

you know who else shut down arizona?

matt patricia.

with a coaching overhaul and a solid gm, the lions could be a playoff team in a year or two.

unless they deal stafford and draft a div 2 qb, then its going to take much, much longer and thats if - big if - the qb turns out to be josh allen and not josh rosin.

Yep.  Things never work out this way for the Lions but if you want to think positive assuming they keep Golladay and Stafford and they are healthy all year they will essentially be upgrading your QB situation, adding a #1 WR, a good corner(If Okudah takes a big step his 2nd year like other corners have), a top 10 draft pick and a much better coaching staff.   Totally glass half full look here but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility either.

they have a good qb, a good rb, a good offensive line, and a solid wr IF they bring back golladay (big if, i think he's gone).  hockenson looks like a nice possession receiver.

some free agent signings and a couple impact draft picks, some turnover luck and youre 9-7.

The entire thing is a crapshoot.  I’m not sure why the chances of Stafford suddenly being able to take this team to a new level in year 13 or 14 are any better than getting lucky drafting a young QB that can do it.   The odds of both aren’t great.  Also, this league is moving away from immobile strong arm pocket QB’s and the ones that are still around have a strong OL in front of them.  The majority of successful QBs in the game now have the ability to escape trouble with their feet to buy time and make dynamic plays under pressure.   It also mean OL breakdowns don’t completely destroy any chance of a positive play as we’ve seen countless times with the Lions.

The Lions do not have a good OL.  They have a great C, promising rookie G, a very unpredictable LT that could either play at pro bowl level or bottom third of the league from one season to the next.  I have no idea which Decker shows up next year.  The entire right side and backups are garbage.   Swift has shown promise this year but how many athletic RB’s have come here and shown us flashes only to either get hurt or get a case of the fumbles and quickly lose confidence.  I will need to see more before penciling him as the answer at RB.

Tua benched again and Fitzpatrick marches the Dolphins right down the field.

Tua is holding the Dolphins back.  But you know, all rookie QBs are superstars.

If the idea is that this Lions team is so untalented that they need a complete overhaul to even be competitive again, then by all means, trade Stafford for some mid round picks and let the 1-15 season next year begin.

I don't think it's that drastic....but I can definitely see why some would.

The losingest franchise in NFL history keeps on keeping on.  Rinse, repeat.

Arizona had their lowest point total of the season and the defense was poop before Saleh arrived whereas Particia was just a product of the Belichick machine. I watched parts of that game today and that defense was ferocious, they play incredibly hard.

Another thing about Saleh is that he seems to be a real players coach, a leader type who players will play hard for. This doesn't mean that he'll necessarily be a good X and O's type of coach but after seeing the stoic Caldwell and Patricia standing on the sideline doing nothing for the better part of the last decade, it would be a nice change of pace to see a guy showing some passion on the sidelines.

In any event, I think the GM hire is more important. It's going to take a whole lot more than a good coach to turn this around.

I was just being funny.  I would be fine with Saleh as head coach.  I mean, why not?

But not based on what his defense did in one game, but rather on the recommendations I've heard.

That said, all we heard about Patricia was that he was some sort of defensive genius and "linebacker guru."  remember that?  Well, statistically his defenses were never any better than mediocre in New England and were a lot of times downright terrible.  So I'm a little wary of the defensive genius label given to coordinators.

Like you said, the GM and the people picking the players are much more important.

Hey man, I was on board with the Patricia hire. Not fully on board but I was hopeful and I also wanted Wisenhunt when Caldwell was hired, I was also all in on Mariucci back in the day so I'm bound to be right about one of these guys one day, right? RIGHT?

The Lions could try building a defense and running game instead of trading the only good thing they have going for them. The one time they built a good defense they won 11 games. Go figure.

The Jets and The Browns are as dumb as the Lions.        The Jets for winning and taking themselves one step further from Trevor and the Browns for no doubt choking away their shot at a playoff berth.  They'll complete their choke next week and miss the playoffs.

Adam Gase should be fired for winning today..............
