yup.

the thing is, the lions were a really good team up until the early 60s.  they won multiple times in the 50s and just couldnt get over the pack in the early 60s.

but then wcf bought the team.  his first two years were good (1962 was a great team) and then....60 years of awful.  with one constant.

Maybe, though I have already conceded your point in principle.

I’ll sharpen my point about what I think happened in practice: Quinn and Patricia were gutless punks. Arrogant know-it-alls who were born in a bubble that Brady and Belichick created, then who were allowed to create a bubble for themselves where they would never have to own their failures. Caldwell: He’s your guy and is not good enough. Slay: sucks you know what. Quin: locker room cancer. Challenge them? Hit the bricks, kid. They were bullies, but the worst kind, weak, insecure, passive aggressive, and surrounded themselves with yes men and lackeys. And drove off the most important player in the franchise’s history.

I listened to an interview with Slay recently, and long story short, he said Caldwell had more rules, and seemed to indicate a lot more rules, than Patricia but Caldwell was more respectful at enforcing them than Patricia. I got the sense that Bob Quinn wasn't disliked or wasn't as disliked as Patricia.

I never heard this reputation of Patricia prior to becoming Lions HC. He was offered the Browns HC job and turned it down. The Giants were also pursuing him. Maybe the power got to his head especially since he know the one person that could fire him wasn't going to. That's why I like this new accountability structure.

It was the first thing I noticed about Campbell.  He is not trying to be the smartest guy in the room, which already means he IS the smartest guy in the room.  There is something to be said of experience and he has none so that may be part of it, but there is also something to be said of listening to EVERYONE in your circle and THEN making the decision you get paid to make.

  • Thanks 1

I'm loving the assistants he is bringing in, they mean so much more than many people realize.   I've read articles from past and present NFL people that say that position coaches are the unsung guys on the team and many times when you see a team take a major leap forward it's not cause of the HC or coordinators but instead its due to the position coaches and their hands on coaching.

He may be able to do something with Davis if he sticks around. The Lions were probably a more attractive landing spot since Nagy and Pace are on the hot seat and likely gone this year. Campbell and staff will have some time.

Davis is one of those guys that could improve with better coaching.   I wouldn't count on it of course but he has the physical attributes he just always looks lost out there,  theoretically that's something that could be corrected to some degree.

when davis make a good play (which is few and far between) you wonder why he doesn't do it more often

I would be surprised if the players got to know Quinn at all.

We probably never heard of this reputation of Patricia because Belichick was the one who laid down the law in NE. Patricia tried to use the mind tricks that his mentor used, but he was not smart enough to do anything more than berate his players. And he had so little credibility coming in that they tuned him out.

Sheila and Spielman, by contrast, seem to be attracting really good people.
