Matt Patricia/Bob Quinn fired - Holmes/Cambell Hired as GM/Coach

Recommended Posts

So, I looked up Campbell's history...

Campbell was the tight ends coach with the Miami Dolphins from 2011 until he took over as the interim head coach when Joe Philbin was fired on October 5, 2015. Campbell led the team to five wins and seven losses.

After leaving the Dolphins in January 2016, Campbell was hired by the Saints as the assistant head coach and tight ends coach.

I find it interesting that he, as the TE coach, became the intern HC in Miami.

Also the fact that he was hired as assistant HC and TE coach by the Saints means something too me.  I wasn't sure if he got the aHC tag as just a way for him to be a gopher for the HC because a TE coach doesn't have enough to do of if it was a "real" position.  Seems like it's real.  That's good.

I can get down with a Holmes/Campbell combo.  Not anything I would have predicted.    But one is an elite scout and the other the players love.   Get the right coordinators and let’s go.

Of course Valenti is still ranting about not picking Tua(well since Tua looks like crap thus far he has changed his stance to not taking Herbert).   In one sentence he says the team needs to trade Stafford since he can collect a bunch of picks then in another says that there are no redeeming qualities about this job since we don't have that young QB and that's why we had to settle for lesser candidates.

So if Stafford is worth "high quality picks" and you have the number 7 pick in a deep QB draft wouldn't that be a redeeming quality?

Oh I know it's his act but I still have to call it out sometime cause unfortunately the people that follow his show buy into it, atleast judging by the radio calls they take(the callers that do go against his take they quickly shutdown).   I remember early on in the process like a month or so ago somebody reported(Birkett?) that the Lions were only going after GM and Coaches with experience in their respective fields and Valenti blasted it saying that it was typical Lions.  Since they failed with inexperience guys in Quinn and Patricia they are now going to pigeon hole themselves into retreads.   Haven't heard the callers about the Campbell hire but yesterday when fans got excited about the Holmes hire he had to say "Remember the last time you hired a GM with no experience."

I like Valenti because he doesn't just read off the propaganda sheet that's emailed over by the organization. You can always tell when hosts just blindly follow the organization and carry their water (Doug Karsch, Wojo, and Scott Anderson) and that's just not nearly as exciting as listening to a contrarian like Valenti.

I called in yesterday fyi and told Valenti I'm giving Holmes the benefit of the doubt and am excited by this hire. I did agree with Valenti though when he pressed me on the fact that he believes Holmes must have still autonomy to move on from Stafford.

I agree about the first part, I don't want a homer that blindly loves everything the hometown team does but I also don't want the contrarian that is going to go against anything the majority agrees with either.

He's talking out of both sides of his mouth when it comes to Stafford.   If Stafford is good enough to get multiple high picks like he suggests they do, then he is good enough to win with and is an asset.  You think Tua could fetch a 1st+ at this time?  I doubt it.   If Stafford is good enough to fetch what he says he could, then he must be a quality QB, and by today's numbers he has a reasonable contract.  So if you have a quality QB under a good contract, that is a redeemable quality yet he says the Lions have none.

Awesome leader and great coach is about all you can hope for.  Ideally the x's and o's come from the coordinators and the analytics will tell you in game strategy(when to go for it, go for 2, punt etc.).   So if you have a coach that is a great leaders the players will fall into line and do what he says.  That's the ultimate goal.

This makes it sound like a done deal. If you watch the clip, it sounds like Saleh all along wanted the Jets job.

I also like the fact that he played in the NFL before.  I think if you're a rookie HC it's easier to get players respect if you actually played at the highest level before unlike somebody like a Patricia who had no experience playing or being a head coach at this level before.

It would make for a great story line if someone from the 0-16 team came in and coached this team to success.

I wouldn't either. I just hope they don't try Joe Lombardi again.

Yeah that would suck, I would hope Spielman and Co. would bring that up during the interview.

No way Lombardi would be a choice. Hope that was tongue in cheek.

I would like to see the Lions go after Mike Kafka for OC. He's probably next in line for the Chiefs OC.

If only so the announcers can call SOL offensive plays "Kafka-esque."

Just came across another article about Holmes.  It's probably not gonna make people like Cruzer happy who think the 40 time are be all end all but when asked why he recommend the Rams pick Jordan Fuller(who is really good) despite his 40 time he said that the 40 time is overrated.   He saw GPS times of him in OSU where he was running over 20MPH so he knew what his "football speed" was, said he doesn't put a ton of stock into the combine 40 cause it doesn't necessarily translate to on the field.

I know we got burnt drafting a guy with a slow 40 time in Teez but is there really any evidence that his 40 time is why he sucked?  Personally I think 40 time is the most overrated metric in football so I'm so glad that we have a GM that doesn't blindly follow it.
