Ok. I’m good with Holmes.  Like it all.  Now let’s see who the coach is going to be.

For how bad the lions have drafted, it’s nice to have a guy with a strong drafting background.

I take issue with you misrepresenting me.

They brought Spielman in to build a consistent culture in their football operations. This is something they had failed to do because of an endless cycle of new GMs and head coaches, each bringing in their own philosophy. Now Spielman will be part of the executive team with Sheila and Rod, and will be their voice to the football operations side.

Spielman was not hired to be GM (and I have not claimed that he was). I have said he was hired because he has been a flawless ambassador for the franchise, because he has decades of first-hand knowledge of the NFL (including watching his brother become one of the most successful executives in the NFL), and because Sheila can trust him to work in the franchise's long-term interests rather than (like Quinn) working in the interest of getting a new contract.

I have never said Spielman does or will or should have full control of personnel decisions. But I would be very surprised if any personnel decision gets made without his input, especially early in Holmes's tenure.

I have never said that Holmes doesn't or won't or shouldn't have a say in the process of hiring a head coach. But in case you didn't notice, the Lions are almost done with their HC search before the ink is dry on Holmes's contract. And Holmes signed the contract knowing this. And ultimately that's all fine, and actually good, in my view. Holmes is going to be on training wheels as a GM for his first contract.

A win for Holmes, and the franchise, is if he comes in with his scouting acumen and has the same hit rate in the draft that he had with the Rams. Build the scouting staff that can do this; that is Holmes's primary job. He does not need to "rebuild the culture." That is Spielman's job.

You said plainly "This is Spielman's Team" without any context. How else am I supposed to interpret that outside of you speculating that he has full control?

Of course he will have input. He, Wood and Sheila are working as a committee and I'm sure Spielman's input is valued but the new GM will have a big say in who the next coach will be and yes, a part of that decision made by Holmes will be based on opinion from Spielman but Holmes will/should have a big voice in the coach hiring process.

would you trade stafford and the lions' #1 pick to miami for tua and their two #1 picks?  what about tua and one of their #1s?

yes of course

that Stafford and 7 for

Tua 3 and 18?

I would do Tua and the 3rd.  I would do the 3rd and tell them to keep Tua.

I think Stafford nets a 1st.  He played great down the stretch and the national media was all over his nuts.

San Fran? Chicago? Miami? Dallas?? Oakland? Pitts NO Indy - lots of solid teams that need a QB.  I think you have to take even a late 1st rounder - Draft at 7 and late first and Take D with both Pics and Sign a Journeyman QB for 1 year.

Let me just say that at the outset that I really like Spielman and Holmes as people and they seemed like smart and accomplished guys.

But this continues the 60 year tradition of putting people in charge who do not have GM experience.

I am confident that they will be better than Quinn, but thats not saying much.

I will be rooting for them, they seem like great men.

I also wonder whether Holmes will be given ultimate roster and cap mgt authority, or if this will be a committee thing.

If the HC is a retread like Lewis, that will be better than Patricia...I say that because I have confidence that Lewis isnt insane.

Again, the bar is high.

You should read the article. His whole logic is because the Lions couldn't sign Colbert or Schneider whom the Lions didn't have permission. Both of whom, by the way, had no GM experience before landing their GM jobs.

Again, they had already interviewed six candidates for head coach before naming Holmes GM. Now that Holmes is hired, they will interview a seventh tomorrow (Todd Bowles) and will re-interview Arthur Smith.

Maybe Holmes will come in and say, “I need to get ‘My Guy’ in here,” and will demand to start the search over. And maybe Sheila will let him.

But I kinda doubt it. And if this doesn’t happen, how big a voice in the HC process will he have?

Instead, what it looks like is the team hired Spielman to oversee football operations for ownership. He is the guy responsible to get the GM and HC to stay on the same page. And Spielman has been, at the very least, heavily involved in the interview process; it would be speculative (but not implausible, and probably more likely than not) to say that he’s been the leading voice.

A lot of people keep talking as if the team needed to hire a GM so they can hire a HC, but the facts on the ground demonstrate that ownership/ Spielman didn’t believe this at all. From how it appears now, they are going to give Holmes the chance to rubber stamp Smith tomorrow, or to start work on day 1 and tell the Owner, President, Special Assistant to the President that they are wrong.

Keep stafford.  Draft a WR.

Or ANYONE WHO CAN PLAY DEFENSE.

When the Lions look like the Steelers or Seahawks, then we will know that inexperience works.

Well, I guess I'd go with Eric Bienimey now with both Saleh and Smith gone. I have a bad feeling we're ending up with Marvin Lewis though.

Why does everyone talk about Marvin Lewis? We have reports that the Lions liked Dan Campbell. Since the Saints are still in the playoffs, they may be waiting on Campbell.

Like what they did the GM search, but the coach search hasn’t gone well.  They may need to start over.   Todd Bowles doesn’t inspire, he has his first interview today.   Maybe do a second interview with Bienimey.  Everyone else is a no for me.

I'd take Marvin Lewis over Todd Bowles too. Bowles was below mediocre with the Jets when he was their coach. I would rather make Bevell the coach than hire Bowles.

Agreed.  Bowles is last on the remaining list.  I hope new names are added.  Any name from the current list is a mediocre hire at best.

How do you evaluate a TE coach? I think Campbell is the front runner now. I have no idea to say whether he is good or not.

I would also keep an eye on Brandon Staley now.
